SD forgot their roots

(SphereCow) #21

You’re funny. In any case, they’re not SD’s roots. If graphics were part of SD’s roots they would have been a friggin’ VFX company, not producing games. There are other threads that discuss bull**** issues like whether or not SD used the proper .atmosphere on a map, or placed lighting correctly. Any time someone wants to make a comparison between maps the point out that ONE video that has post processing effects enabled, and another video that doesn’t..

Also. In the video that everyone’s saying has better graphics, the ambient lighting is turned down while the shadow-casting lighting is far more obvious making the video look more dramatic.

So please, drop it.

(fearlessfox) #22

For as start, threads have tangents. I take it you haven’t been part of many online discussions, or real life ones for that matter, if you don’t realise this yourself.

IE: I didn’t claim this had anything to do with SD’s roots.

I didn’t say SD /used/ to do atmosphere well, I’m suggesting that the atmosphere shown in the second video is > what we actually have in game. And that is, sadly, a fact.

That’s almost every video pre-release vs every video post. Ie: they downgraded the graphics, for whatever and reason and however they did it.

Drop what? The fact that the game looks better that way and that’s not what we’ve got now?

Can’t, because it’s true.

I love Brink, but blindly defending it like you are is ridiculous.

Also, your confrontational attitude is /horrid/.

(Kurushi) #23

Console port? Please don’t insult our intelligence.

Then you mention a few minor issues that can easily be tweaked so they’ve lost their roots? Ever thought some of these things were design decisions? If you played any of their old games properly I think you’d realise the exact opposite: They did not try to please the console crowd at with Brink which is a brave move if you ask me and deserves more respect
Dear Splash Damage,

Splash Damage you forgot your roots, all the good things which made you so popular!
Sadly I cant disagree with the original poster.
Online console gaming has changed the world. Games are being made more simple and simple for casual gamers.

I have to say though that in Sds opinion they are more popular than ever.
Instead of PC they get people from 2 other consoles. Roughly double or triple the amount of people and income.
Population wise (online at one given point) this game is more popular W:ET and QW.
But I see the population falling ever so slightly daily :frowning:

And yes I am a PC gamer (and dont really care about consoles)

design decisions for the console, obviously
if you can’t see that then you are either a console player, or never played previous games made by SD

I’ve blindly defended nothing. The video they showed during production uses different atmosphere effects/lighting, along with postprocessing effects on. The other video doesn’t.

So not only are you people that suggest that the graphics are worse, wrong, but you’re derailing a thread that is talking about something that is the opposite of graphics, i.e, gameplay.

I’m only confrontational towards people who make silly posts. It’s pretty annoying wanting to help design games but having to read comments that criticize them for absolute non-issues. You’re saying I mindlessly defend Brink, but that’s not true. Have you seen me ever defend the horrid bugs, lack of QA, or awful AI? Not a single time.

It’s BS issues like this, leveling up, people wanting TDM/FFA, and to a lesser degree, female characters that are truly irritating.

The thing is, the graphics are worse /because/ they’ve changed the effects. You cannot make the game, no matter how you tweak it, look like the second video.

That’s it. They look worse. It doesn’t matter /why/.

Atmosphere /enhances/ play. A game doesn’t have to have the best most realistic up to date graphics, but the aesthetics of current brink do lack something that pulls most people in.

The second video on show looks a lot more immersive and that directly effects gameplay.

If you don’t understand this then you shouldn’t be designing anything.

Sorry, but them downgrading the graphics - however they did it - and shipping out a product that looks less graphically impressive than the previews = a poor show.

You can hark on all you like, the videos speak for themselves.

Read my post again. Well done for repeating it back.

Design decisions are just that, regardless of platform so stop trying to repeat what the cool kids say.

I will stick my neck and out say there is nothing console about this game effecting gameplay and if you can, well you really haven’t played their old games

(Crytiqal) #29

That game in the 2nd video looks awesome, where is it??

(fearlessfox) #30

Exactly. The entire feel of that video looks like another game in comparison to the relatively stark experience we’re treated to in reality.

(DarkangelUK) #31

Maybe the Brink we have today does look like that, we just can’t see it cos of all the on-screen HUD and icon clutter

(Bakercompany) #32

If they had just kept the Lobster explosion and grenade explosions that way alone…good lord what a huge difference.

And then we wouldn’t have had to listen to all the fartnade threads…gawd.

He, I know…

The explosion mechanics (ie KD focused) are really cool, but I’d much prefer a satisfying boom than a measly parp.

You mean because of the 15-ish fps with all graphics options to minimum?

Agreed. I like the countdown around the grenade icon, thats awesome. I love shooting them, I love that they’re not as lethal, but still very useful.

But man what a difference in the effects. And the guys screaming as they fly away ragdoll style from the explosion. Thats two things I would have left in for sure.

I want to hear words to the effect of why. Why this stuff was “downgraded”, why was stuff that is obviously damn cool missing?

Surely the consoles can handle it; I don’t see anything in Brink that is /that/ in depth or cutting edge that these kinds of sacrafices had to be made…

brink will probaly be all good when the 1.4 patch is released

(Petrolbomb_Tom) #40

Could Splash Damage please hand Brink over to another developer so we can have the game in the second video?

That was the game I was following for over a year. there is nothing graphically in that game that could not run on a mid level PC or console (if they used the right engine).

Maybe SD were showing of the game last year using the Tech5 engine.

Please, please SD (I can’t believe I am saying this), the next game you make please just code the PC version and overview another (good) team who can make the console one. Next time please stop and think ( I can’t help myself)…Muppets (they deserved it)

P.S What rig did you take the screen shots on the main page from - I run everything max on PC and he game looks nothing like it…I can’t believe they UK trading standards have not shut you down…Mupperts.
