I’m posting to know more about the feasibility of releasing Brink under the GPL, similar to what id Software did with Doom 3 and Doom 3 BFG Edition . Such a release would breathe new life into Brink , allowing the community to modernize the game, port it to Mac and Linux, and revamp the online experience—something that could ensure its long-term viability.
We’ve seen firsthand the incredible results of open-sourcing engines with projects like RBDOOM-3-BFG and dhewm3 , which have significantly enhanced Doom 3 's capabilities while preserving its legacy. Similarly, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory 's release under the GPL enabled the community to maintain and improve it, leading to fantastic projects like ET: Legacy, ioRTCW, and RealRTCW . These have kept the game alive, playable, and relevant decades after its original launch.
Given Brink 's unique movement mechanics, team-based objectives, and potential for customization, an open-source release could lead to a resurgence—something that would undoubtedly bolster Splash Damage’s legacy and reputation within the gaming community. With interest in classic multiplayer shooters growing and the community eager to preserve and enhance older games, now more than ever would be the perfect time to make this happen.
Would this be something Splash Damage might consider? It would be a fantastic way to give Brink a second life while fostering goodwill within the gaming community.
Looking forward to your thoughts!
