Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 30 fps ???

(ToeD) #1

i just got a new Sapphire Radeon 9600XT installed it run et at 1024*768 and i get 30 fps at railgun  wtf

my sys spec are:
AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz
512 DDR Ram
4x AGP motherboard
Windows XP SP1
Display drivers 7.94

I phoned the shop and they said my processor is to slow but i dont think thats true.

Try running at a lower detail (not res)… I have a 9600 (2500+ cpu, 8x agp), and I’m able to pull 43 fps everywhere on railgun, unless i’m caught in an airstrike storm. Also, in the Display control panel, try changing the OpenGL settings to “performance.” (note: this option and others are all accessed by clicking the advanced button)

I think it is

Have you installed the correct motherboard drivers? It’s really important, especially for VIA chipsets.

Hmm, seems a trifle slow…

On Linux x86
2400XP 266FSB
512Mb DDR
4x AGP
GeFarce 3ti200
1024x768 all detail turned on at 32bpp.

Its hitting the 90fps limiter most of the time and dropping to around 40 minimum when there’s loads of AS etc being rendered.

It could well be that your CPU isn’t able to shovel as much data as your Radeon can process.

You could get a 2400XP for about £50 and you’d be flying!

(Lagger) #6

this sounds like a driver issue…
i had an athlon 1333 with a gf 4400 ti,
and had around 80 fps on railgun.
get some drivers for your motherboard young chaps!

(ToeD) #7

no lowering the details doesnt help and the new mobo drivers are no good either. :frowning:

Change this setting in your config.

r_ati_fsaa_samples “0” //set it to 0 for performance

Display Drivers 7.94??

Do you mean CATALYSTâ„¢ 3.8??

Yep your CPU is a big bottleneck, what did you have before this 9600XT.

If it was an nvidia card of some description then I would advice a re-install.

How old is your XP installation, any more than 9 months and I would re-install, this is not important on a 3GHz 512 ddr400 9800XT machine, but yours will show a good increase in speed.

Create minimum 2 partitions C and D. Install all relevant motherboard drivers, place all personal docs and the like to D drive, changing any pointers like My Documents. Ghost the finalized C windows installation onto D drive.

Any time need to re-install C, BAM (futurama) 10 mins later fresh new XP.

yeah i have catalist 3.8
i had a Geforce 2 MX 400 before that
i reinstalled windows XP
and my cpu and my RAM speed are the bottleneck i found out after some extencive research and phoning :(.
i have 2 partitions 1 full of warez drivers and documents and the other full of games and more warez :).
thanks for your help all, but i think its time for a totaly new pc.

Probably best all round, good luck on your new build.

generally, try a low and a high resolution, if fps stays roughly the same between 800x600 and 1024x768 then cpu is bottleneck, if it changes significantly then its probably video card.

can be worth turning on low detail sky / fastsky; turning off particles (explosion effects) and maybe atmospheric effects (rain/snow) and see what that does - they dont really effect visual quality all that much and can really cut down on the fps drops when theyre hurting the most.

If you’re upgrading CPU etc, you may or may not be able to chuck a “XP” cpu into that motherboard, maybe more likely you will need a new one and possibly new ram. should be able to get one of the cut-down nforce2’s (unless you want the good Soundstorm sound chip or SATA, RAID etc) for about £50 (when cheaper in USD$) online, a good AMD XP for not much more and a 512mb stick for about the same.

yeah im going for asus a7n8x deluxe with 1 gig or ram and amd 2800+ and a radeon 9800 pro (i get 40% discout so why not?)

/me hugs his A78NX Deluxe
