Hi I am making a desert map and here some screenies.

Axis base

Axis base

Allied span the water purifier plant

Way to the command post

HURT FROM NEXIUM

([rD]MrPink) #2

Not bad looking. No offense, but I hope the textures on the chopper will change, they look too bland. Oh, I do realize it would take a while to make that too, just trying to be constructive…

(Harty) #3

well I think thats what people want to hear about so they can improve their map

(flashkillaman) #4

little dark for an desert map

(DeAtHmAsTeR) #5

thats the most stupid thing i have heard…

why is there a stereotypical view that if there is a desert, it must be day and bright and shiny, there is Night in the desert too…

a night desert map sounds kewl  retexture your sand to make it more realistic…!

(seven_dc) #6

Thx for the comments.

The helicopter is under work. There is a lot to do with the details and textures. The darkness is only at the screenshots the real map has more light. This map is kind of small for you who love small maps.

The objective is for axis to stop allied destroying the helicopter by contructing barriers and protecting the wall. The allied must destoy one or both walls and destoy the helicopter. both must construct a command post.

HOTELS IN MEXICO CITY

(BXpress) #7

hm, helicopter? WW2? hm… doesnt fit for me…

(Blockbuster) #8

they did have helicopters in ww2 just experimental (not like the helicopter in the movie “where eagles dare” :D)

(ziege) #9

Looks really cool, but as said above I think it’s too dark and would look better with lighter, sandy, textures such as in Oasis.

(Ifurita) #10

Actually, if you’ve ever been to the deserts, the nights can get very dark since there is no reflected light coming from nearby cities, built up areas etc. The only light comes from the moon and stars, and if it’s not out or it’s cloudy, it’s pitch black. A dark desert map is totally in character

ffs do people just ignore my posts.

Well 400 posts in over a few weeks, i think not , i think most consider you’re post as spam, i seen loads of good threads ruined by you :stuck_out_tongue:

Just because you posted your opinion, it doesn’t mean others cannot post theirs. And I know deserts can be dark, I just think it would look nicer if it were light. Or at least have everything dark, at the moment you have light buildings then really dark sand and sky, it looks very odd and unnatural.

([rD]MrPink) #14

Oh, you should probably phong your mountains too… I noticed they looked really “brushy” in the first shot.

(seven_dc) #15

Phonging was in my todo list, but after investigating it I would use too much time to learn it and then my map publish time would delay… I don’t see Phong as my high priority list. It is the thing I do if I have time.

2 months in fact, which posts would that be, and also you can’t blaim me for having an active participation in the world of mappin in ET, many of you have been mapping for yours, but i have not, as i have learnt quickly, the 400 odd posts are a mixture of n00b, advanced and opiniative.

now to keep on topic, map loooks nice, ye phong is annoyin to learn how to do. and i just ended up crashing my et when i inserted some odd line into my shader for my trenches/mountains.

oh and also (edited) yes but posting the same thing what another person has said… i think that is spam

have you scheduled a beta launch seven_dc?

(seven_dc) #17

have you scheduled a beta launch seven_dc?

No I have not. because I have just moved and everything in my apartment is a mess. I would like to complete my map asap, but I don’t think I cannot map at least for two-three weeks. So beta launch is definetly NOT decided yeat.

I started to map this map when the tools came out. (I haven’t mapped ever before (If mapping for doom is not included)) So the map has been a big learning process. No planning has been made and the whole level has just born from nowhere.

Looks good… i do like the night theme, but rarely in a desert will you see clouds (even at night). You might want to experiment with changing your skybox to the one used in goldrush, i think its a bit more appropriate.

Your terrain looks good also, but its just a bit blocky. If you map is small, you can probably get away with increasing the x-y divisions in your terrain for a more realistic look. Im referring mostly to the 5th shot where i see several large blocky triangles.

Other than that the map looks cool, looking forward to a beta

(G0-Gerbil) #19

Phong is a doddle, really.
For all shaders used in your terrain (I assume it’s brushwork terrain, not terrain terrain?) simply add these two lines into all the shaders:

q3map_nonplanar
q3map_shadeAngle 90

Oh, and:

surfaceparm landmine

in case you haven’t already

Personally, while not thinknig a dark desert map is out of keeping, I just think too many people are doing night-time maps at the moment.

Still, could be worse - he didn’t use rain

BTW, that helicopter pilot was pretty damn good to land there
