Sadly, the community is (getting) really toxic

(Phantomchan) #1

So I want to address a growing problem which happens with a lot of online games and that problem is toxicity. I have noticed that the toxicity (atleast from my experience) has risen quite a lot and it’s beginning to worry me.

I have seen stuff the past few days frequently like :
“Please **** kill yourself you useless nazi piece of trash.”
“**** noob team shouldn’t be able to play this **** game.”
“I hope you will kill yourself.”

What worries me is that the quotes are getting way more violent and are appearing more frequently. It often also comes from the people who are in the last place or so regarding points. Will there ever be a feature were people can report these bastards and maybe get chat-restricted for X amount of games or something?

this is not anything new; its just that the words seem more offensive to our generation.

instead of ‘noob’ people say ‘ez’ and ‘get rekt’; instead of ‘no life’ its now ‘autistic’ etc. etc.

Toxicity was always a thing in online gaming; especially FPS, imo there really isn’t much to be done except to ignore the kiddies.

Ppl get toxic when I kill them as Phantom. Best way to answer is keep killing them. Dont say anything just keep on playing. They will get super mad, and it gets funny

I remember when I used to play a bit of counterstrike many years ago. This community is tame in comparison!

(Volcano) #5

go play HoN if you want to know about toxic people

(Phantomchan) #6

Shoe had a nice theory regarding an amount of Phantom hate, it’s due to the fact he is close and personal and invades personal space (and also that ‘where did he come from’ feeling). This stuff makes people more mad compared to for example a Vassilli which just sits there and headshots everyone and goes like 20/0 or something like that.

I have played enough LoL to know about toxic people. I even got chat restricted for 25 games once due to the whole enemy team reporting me for no reason at all just because they lost and I was a pain in the ass for them ingame. To make matters worse, they kept flaming our team and stuff, but I doubt my teammates even took the effort to report them. However, I haven’t spoken a darn word in the ‘all’ chat. Also, a lot of people playing LoL always blame others for their own mistakes. Most often the jungler and/or support are to blame for nothing.

this is why there should always be server bins for every game so clans could have their own…

Yeah, kids will be kids :). Best to ignore and carry on - everyone was a n00b once. And there is a tendancy for people blaming their team to have the lowest xp / k/d I find.

(Ashog) #9

So untrue! I’ve been always hugely mediocre!

(shibbyuk) #10

When is it one stops being a noob? I’m still waiting!

(ispellcorrectly) #11

Can somebody explain what a ‘noob’ is please?

(shibbyuk) #12

Someone who asks questions like that !

(ispellcorrectly) #13

 oh, well, consider me educated

(Nail) #14

as you may know the meaning has changed from one who is new to the game to anyone who doesn’t totally agree with the Ranger, who of course is the only one who knows how to play “properly, the way the game was meant to be played”

(fubar) #15

newb =/= noob

(twt_thunder) #16

LOL… Yeah we all have been expert all the time…

(kenpokiller) #17

No hate, no game
I feed on anger.

About HoN: Actually, its much much better now compared to 3-5 years ago. Random people can even be friendly and joke about the super toxic days.

(Best way to solve toxicity is to remove the ground problem: Unwanted teammates.
Easy in theory what to do to solve it:

  • Heavily separate beginners/learners/noobs from the rest
  • Heavily separate low+/medium-/medium+ from the rest
  • Heavily separate pros/elite from the rest.
  • Easily accessable chat abuse report function
  • Many Game Masters who check every report
  • Cool down / suspension when found guilty of chat abuse (Some games cool down your chat functionality, some cool down access to game, some do both, some games doesnt even have all-chat in public just team-chat)

How to do it, is another question, where even pro devs struggle, but a few seem to get the hang of it)
