Running multiple ET clients behind a router on a LAN

(NewdeaL) #1

I’ve recently ran into a problem with trying to get myself and a friend on the same server at the same time. The first of us to get on the server is fine, but when the other starts to connect, the one of us who was connected gets booted or ET.EXE crashes. I’ve tried adding +set net_port ##### in both of our command lines (different ports for each) to no avail. if someone coule help me, it’d be greatly appreciated.

never tryed it with a router… but ive had 4 clients playing on the same server over internet connection sharing without a problem :expressionless:

Behind a router which supports NAT shouldn’t get you into problems, it would be wise to post the PB kick code next time. However i think its due too the same game key… on one of the systems delete the etkey file and recreate a new one

I’ve done this with no trouble. If there is a portforward setting on the router that tries to forward ET packets to a specific IP on the LAN, there will be nasty lag problems in-game and connecting to a server becomes very difficult. With no forwarding, though, I’ve never had any real problems.

i’ve deleted the etkey’s on both machines as well, and it did nothing. OF COURSE i’ve lost my router manual, and adobe reader wont work on my machine for some reason, so i cant get into my router settings :banghead:

but then again, we’ve lanned here before, with no problems, so i’m quite dumbfounded.
not sure what to do about it, maybe have him download ET again and reinstall if that works, i’ll post it here.

Meh.

Try opening http://127.0.0.1 in your browser iirc. I use a Belkin router and doing this brings up me settings I can use to configure it directly through a web based interface… I know some others have this feature. Make sure DHCP is enabled also.

Cant really suggest anything else as you seemed to have tried it already… when you deleted etkey did you use the pb command to regenerate a new one completely?

(NewdeaL) #7

no i didnt use the pb command, mainly because i cant remember it. i have a D-Link router, so if anyone else has/knows something about D-Link routers, and how to get into the web interface for the set up, that too, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who has posted here, trying to help me out =]

Uh, that is normally the loopback interface address (same as ‘localhost’, i.e. the PC he’s browsing from).

More likely the router is on http://192.168.0.1. Try ‘admin’ as password, that’s at least what my D-Link DI-704 has as default. Also search D-Link’s web for a manual.

The main thing I know about D-Link routers is that they have never given me anything but grief. I avoid them like the plague now.

If you’ve got an old junk system laying around with a viable floppy drive, I highly recommend Coyote Linux - basically a software-powered router on a floppy. I pulled an old 486 out of someone’s garbage bin a couple years ago and have been running a perfect Coyote router on it ever since. Don’t let the Linux part scare you, btw; it is quite easy to set up and administrate, and well-documented.

You could also look at the manual by googling for the exact address of the pdf and using the view as HTML option

(Domipheus) #11

adobe has a pdf->html converter on www.adobe.com

As stated just use google?

Yeh, Spoof, thats the one  - wasnt too sure if its local ip or not cos it depends whats running and where afaik. Last time I tried went straight in me fileserver/printserver… :]

(NewdeaL) #13

yes, that worked to get into my router setup  which was a problem before…but i’m still a little on the clueless side as to what to modify/change in the setup. DHCP is enabled, but i havent seen anything about port forwarding etc.

i’ll look into it more deeply, but i’m still sorta lost :disgust:

edit: i just thought of something, i think when it actually did work last time, that i had the DMZ set up on both computers…maybe i’ll dmz his computer and see if it works

I use a second (old) Pentium computer with fli4l as router (a Linux installation on one floppy disc). Its quite simple to install and to configure and it has a real good documentation and tutorials. Additionally it has a windows client for remote controlling the router (imonc)

Sometimes I manage to boot 3 ET’s running on the same machine

Maybe that’ll help ya out?
