RtCW maps -> ET

(Resolute) #1

Hey splash damage people and all RtCW map making ninjas. I have an idea. I didn’t bother trolling through the forums, so I am sorry if this idea has been raised already.

Anyway, I was thinking, the quickest way to get a large base of maps for ET would be to convert some of the existing RtCW maps to ET. Now I know it isnt as easy as that statement I just made, but if there was a simple program you could run on a pk3 to make it go from rtcw map to ET map that would be cool. Also, many maps would need some minor changes to allow the covert ops to take part.

Imagine RtCW beach, but with a covert ops door out of the bunker off the trenches that led straight to the war room for example? Or if the door that you blow on beach was also a team door (for foolish teams that leap the wall from the start).

I think that destroying an objective based maps like base for example would probably be really hard to integrate covert ops into effectively while document capturing maps would probably have a smoother transition. Not to mention the fact that splash damage might get in major trouble if they took the original RtCW maps that were made by others and edited them. But who is going to stop some unkown guy from doing it?

Anyway, I would love to hear what other peoples (especially splash damage people, if they are willing to spend any more time on this game) opinions are on this, and I would love to hear what RtCW classic maps you think could be changed slightly (and how they would be changed) to make them great maps for ET.

Putting to one side for a moment the copyright and other issues that would probably prevent RTCW maps being converted, the only ones that would really work, I’d imagine, are the bigger maps or those where, as you say, Covert-Ops could be used.

Also, most of the E.T. maps are huge by comparison, with several objectives to be achieved, whereas RTCW are single objective mainly. Even Beach, for instance, is single objective (transmit the Docs). The door and wall are secondary objectives that can be circumvented by boosting a player over the wall and taking the front bunker.

On the one hand, I’m guessing the large, mutil-objective maps are a big part of the appeal for players coming from a non-RTCW background, however I’m sure some re-worked RTCW maps would pull in some of the remaining RTCW players, especially the Clans, which would be a very welcome thing.

But then we come back to copyright issues. If Activision wish to support E.T. and allow RTCW maps to be converted that’s OK, but I can’t see them doing so. They make money from RTCW, but not from E.T.

ok i think some things have to be cleared here…

converting a rtcw-map to ET is no easy task, it would mean to almost completely retexture the whole map, building a command map, new scripting, and so on, all this can only be done by the guy who created the map and so has it’s source, there’s no way of simply converting it with some tool and it would take at least weeks (in a small simple map, in case the new editor and documentation would be out yet anyway).

but even if it would be possible i think it would suck to convert a map of an other person if not permitted, players don’t know how much work goes into a map! it’s really not copyright that bothers me (it should be abolished imho) but at least respect for the creators who don’t get any money of their work and all they demand is not to change their maps without permission (if you read the readme’s you will read that almost always) which should be respected, so if you want a specific map to be converted, ask the creator and you might be lucky, most are waiting for the new toys to play with anyway…

i understand you though, it would be really great to have more rtcw-players and especially clan-players in ET as the noob-factor yet is incredibly high but just give them (and us mappers) more time and new maps will be pouring in, we do our best! :smiley:
