RTCW:ET cancelled?!?

(damocles) #1

Just read over on http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/24947 that ET SP is cancelled? Is this true? Figured I’d get verification from the horse’s mouth…not that you look like horses or anything…

So is it going to be MP only free pack now or still going ahaed with the commercial SP/MP gubbins?

(Matt) #2

If you guys don’t release it in that fashion, please release your work online for download.

Maybe you could finish it and sell it like we used to sell old mods? Remember the X-Men mod for Quake 1? It was sold commercially and got tons of cash.

(UniKorn) #3

Read it on gamespy as well :frowning: I immediately came here, then to remember that you were doing MP :stuck_out_tongue:

(pants) #4

ummmmmmmmm… wow, that was completely unexpected. :eek3: I hope this doesn’t affect you guys adversely.

Looking forward to a free download however. :drink:

Just got backl home and read this too -

I sincerely hope this isn’t a huge blow to all your work @ SplashDamage on the multiplayer side of things

TBH - I may get stoned and jeered at for saying this - But I don’t give two figs for the single player - and would quite happily pay for the multiplayer aspect alone.

Shocking news though…

<- Got my fingers crossed for you all.

Sounds like the multilplayer and updated features/patch will be free

I really only preordered the game for the awesome mp, where the sp portion would have been kind of an added bonus. Still quite ecstatic that the mp portion will be released  – Three questions though:

  1. Support. Will we be able to get tech support on the ET portion of the game after it is released? I’m assuming that support would be available as with any other patch, but assumptions can prove fatal.

  2. Bots. Will the mp bots still be included? They simply sounded incredibly awesome, and would be a great way for clans to run through one side of a strat. Bots could fill out pubs when necessary, so that instead of 2v3 or somesuch, you could have instant action until more ppl join.

  3. Timeline. Will it really take ‘several months’ before the mp portion becomes available? Cost-benefit analysis suggests that it would be unreasonable to devote time and energy to something that will be given away. Even if ET mp draws more consumers to the RTCW franchise, ‘several months’ may be too late to rejuvenate our slowly diminishing RTCW community. Is the ‘several months’ estimate the result of Splash Damage taking people away from the project?

I would have payed for the mp portion alone as well – release it with like 17-20 maps for $19.95 USD; still gain something. Release it for free you gain the respect, adoration, and dedication of the established community

^^ Yep, I gathered that - But I honestly reckon they could have charged for it alone…

Look at all the people willing to pay for Online only games out there -

It can be done.

:banghead:
Reading this in the Q3F-forum almost made me reply with some laughable post of ‘muhahaha, what ? ET not released ? noway man, that game is gonna rock, SP and MP sided’ … but i reluctantly held myself from it, only to read the news at Gamespy.

Kinda bad and good news there : Bad, because there’s not gonna be a commercial’ release for SD … yet. Good, because all the hard work you guys put in hasn’t been for nothing.
I hope this doesn’t hurt SD too much : emotionally as well as commercially.

All the best to you guys, and looking forward to the new MP content.

( i stil cant believe it though : also, because i’ve seen some footage from the SP side of the game, and it looked cool to play  .)

if the rumours are more to do with scheduling rather than technical errors then we may well see ET-SP phone home and get released in the future fingers crossed My thoughts are with you guys I hope it’s not too much of a blow to SD (maybe a ‘phtttt’ or a ‘phoooo’) things always have a funny way of working out for the best…

I figured there’d be a thread on here by now :lookaround:

As the press release mentions, the multiplayer portion of Enemy Territory is going to be released as a free download, and as such SD is trundling along in our usual fashion. Any responsibilities we had towards the single player portion of the game are now gone, though, which leaves us free to focus entirely on multiplayer and make it even better.

It’s a massive shame to lose all the hard work we’d put into single player alongside Mad Doc, but hopefully we’ll be able to recycle a lot of it back into the multiplayer game.

Thanks for the support guys

Here’s the full press release, in case anyone missed it:

February 11, 2003

id Software and Activision announced today they are canceling the retail release of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Despite a strong effort from talented developers, the single player portion of the game did not progress as anticipated. Canceling the release was a difficult decision made in the best interest of the Wolfenstein franchise and fans. However, we remain excited about the progress and direction of Enemy Territory multiplayer. Over the next several months the focus of our development will be to complete the multiplayer portion of Enemy Territory and provide it as a free downloadable expansion to Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

In Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Axis and Allied teams do battle in traditional single scenarios, or wage war through a series of linked scenarios in a totally new campaign mode. During combat players gain experience and skill, and through battlefield promotions are awarded additional abilities that remain persistent across an entire campaign. Additionally, new character classes like the covert operative class as well as an enhanced engineer allow teams to perform reconnaissance, steal enemy uniforms, and construct battlefield structures and military installations in the midst of combat to gain tactical advantages for their team. All new game modes, maps and communication abilities require players and teams to develop advanced strategies and tactics in the struggle for front line domination.

It’s a shame to see this happen to this project, I was looking forward to its release…I know how much effort goes into developing a top notch product and commend your efforts to make a MP/SP game utilizing the same code base, a move based I believe on the desire to give the wolf community a fully functional multi use MOD development tool kit.
But all is not lost as we/you will see your efforts reach the light of day and knowing your track record we’ll have bar raising MP maps-o-plenty to satisfy our need to keep howling in the world of wolf.
I believe your companies mantra is “By the community, for the community” and I’m sure you’ll be still answering map development questions a year from now as people continue to expand upon all your hard work spent, I know I will.
Cheers :drink: , when the hangover wears off I hope you realize that the strong community that you have worked so hard to establish is still behind you and we look forward to sampling your wares.

(Hewster) #13

I guess MadDoc wasn’t up to the job ?
neway I’m glad you guys are still working on MP

All the Best

Hewster

btw, will you still be needing play testers ?

(PaulS) #14

Your development of Multiplayer games like wolf is second to none… Playing the many other out there they don’t play as smoothly, are more relsitic and create months and months of enjoyment.

Keep up the dedication to excellence! And listening to us the fans of your products!!

(pazur) #15

:frowning: just yesterday i was thinking about preordering ET at amazon. i hope the work was and still is somehow financed by the publisher

(pants) #16

according to Wils on #splashdamage, they still are. this was one of my chief concerns too.

what emoticon to use for this post… how about this…
:twak:

(hannibal) #17

Who/what is to blame for this?

“Despite a strong effort from talented developers, the single player portion of the game did not progress as anticipated.”

That statement suggests someone wasn’t performing. Who is that someone?

(|X|Avenger) #18

Who’s to say someone must be to blame?

Alchemists used to try to transmutate lead into gold and failed, but nobody was ‘to blame’ – it was simply something that was out of reach given their level of scientific achievement and resources

Mad Doc is mentioned with distinction as making a fine attempt - until there is a reason to believe this statement is false, accept that as the truth.

(hannibal) #19

Noone was to blame, everyone is completely pleased with everything done and noone didn’t do their job and it is all wonderful and that is why a software product (being produced after approximately a year by several contractors for id) has been canceled after much publicity/promotion of its impending release by a publicly held company, Activision. Publicly held companies just love informing investors that a project has been abruptly canceled, it really makes money.

It is being canceled because everyone was doing a good job making RTCW:ET and, like alchemic conversion of base metals to gold (so brainy!), the game was just completely impossible to make. Companies just do that, like, everyday, because everything is A OK and money grows on trees.
