Review Field

(SirLiveAlot) #1

I have re-opened Review Field- http://www.planetwolfenstein.com/rf/ and i’m looking for some people to help me write reviews for maps pokes G0-Gerbil. The reason why it went inactive was because of school/work/life. I have found quite a bit of free time and i’m trying to make it a great site for people to send in reviews for maps so, the author of thoes maps and read them and improve on thoes points when they make anouther map. Also, to help pick maps for servers and such. So, if you want to give me a hand that would be great.

you want my review??? they all SUX!!! SUX I SAY!!!.. er. actually i don’t know =)

there are a lot of good maps coming out now… this month quite a few. I think, the best review u can get is a majority review… as in the way at pcgamplayers does it. they allow people to vote and it show’s as a thumbs up and thumbs down point of view… they post them both… 80% of viewers says thumbs up… and so on…

i do like most of the custom maps that do come out… but i do personaly judge them on different points… visual/gameplay/average fps… ect…
every point add’s up to a total and what i will play and what i won’t.

but a majority review of custom maps, and even standard maps is a good idea. hopefully most people won’t go by these reviews and d/l the map to see for themselves… and contribute to the review site, don’t want peoples maps not even being tried cause of what someone says without judgiing for themselves type of thing =)

that’s my 2 cents… if i had 4 cents more i’d have a tree-fitty… =P

You can still send in reviews! just advoid l33t language :-p. Anyways i’ve been meaning to change that introduction to every time I look at it i’ve just forgotten or am too lazy too. Anyways, i’ve updated that into. Honestly some maps are just plain bad and are waste of time to download. People who put up maps with out description are not worth downloading. It shows they didn’t put effort to type simple text into the .arena file. Bad conversions are the main people who do this and it gives good, well done conversions a bad name. But then again, thats just my 2 canadian cents.
Back to what I was going to talk about. Creating logins with passwords take lots of work. If there was going to be a majority review thing then it would just be annoynamus. Can’t spell :-p.

I thought the idea was to get multiple reviews (written) for each map?
Therefore you’d have a kind of majority right there.

(SirLiveAlot) #5

Yeah ideally it would work like that but not many people want to take the time and write up reviews. So, the plan is have written reviews and a kind of anonymous vote on the side. So, in the main page there would be the reviewers average and anonymous average.

Fairy nuff

(SirLiveAlot) #7

You know you want to write me a Review…yeah I like to see my name on the board

Just an example, but what the “overall” latest category in the ratings?

Anyway, that’s a good initiative. I like review sites because generally people are a bit more frank about the real quality of maps.

I mean, if TheBigHouse had made reviews for RTCW and ET, lots of maps would be poorly rated.

(G0-Gerbil) #9

Well, that’s partly why I don’t review maps ‘properly’, because I’m usually pretty scathing

(SirLiveAlot) #10

The overall is just and average of the scores out of 10 and a place for the reviewer to just talk about the map in general. Like for example “this map has many good qualties in it but it needs work before it can become a good multiplayer maps I will play regually” and such. And Gerbil making me reach for my dictionary, that is a poor reason to send in a review. Don’t make me poke you constantly till you give in a send in a review.

(G0-Gerbil) #11

oo oo can I review Marko’s maps?

We’ll see how it goes - my main trouble is I only fancy reviewing thebetter maps, because of course it’s pretty much impossible to judge how a map plays unless you’ve done so. And obviously there’s little incentive to track down a new custom map and play it long enough to give an informed opinion of how it plays, if you don’t like the look of the map to start with!

(G0-Gerbil) #12

As an aside, is your site using a database back end?
It would be interesting to be able to pull up all of a reviewer’s scores - that way you could find out if a reviewer (say me, for example!) gave ALL maps a low score, in which case a medium score from them would all but amount to saying a map is 'kin excellent.
Or a summery, where say maps are divided into ‘good’ ‘average’ ‘poor’, and you can see how many maps they’ve scored into each catagory.

In other words, to stop people reading a review from someone like me, and assuming a map is crap from my score, when in fact I’m just the Scrooge of map reviewing and actually the map itself was ok

(SirLiveAlot) #13

The site is using a database. There is a list of the average score the reviewers have given in the contact us page http://dynamic6.gamespy.com/~rf/contact.php . I like my average at about 5. I find averages at 7 for sites can be miss-leading. looks at the un-used game in the cornor. I’m also one for looking at the better maps unless a map is offensive to me. Then I have to play it lots and point out it’s every flaw.

(G0-Gerbil) #14

5 as an average makes sense - I remember the good old days when I used to bother buying computer game magazines and every game, even the bad ones, would get about 50% (or 5/10, or 10/20 or 3 out of 6 fish or whatever scoring system they used), and they’d say an average game would be around 75%. That makes no *#%^&ing sense at all - average should be half marks and it’s as simple as that. The average should be the average!

Anyway I’ll look into it when I get time, what do I have to do, is there an entry page?

I’m just being nice cos my map is still top rated :stuck_out_tongue:

(SirLiveAlot) #15

really…holds a gun to the review There is no entry page as of yet. Just e-mail the review to me and it gets put up. Assuming of course you don’t write it all in 1337 language or swear an average of 3 times per sentence.

(seven_dc) #16

Hi,

Is still site still alive. It’s been while when its updated. I would like to see more reviews. please.

New Mexico Dispensaries

(G0-Gerbil) #17

Well add them
I’ll get on to doing some reviews next week I reckon - I just haven’t got the time or enthusiasm for ET right this moment, work kinda sucks it all up.
I was shocked to find I hadn’t touched ET itself (as opposed to mapping) in about 3 days - an almost unheard of situation for me!

(neotic) #18

just do it like its done at www.planetquake.com/lvl/

each map gets a paragraph blurb, people can vote, people can leave comments, and people can see how many times it was downloaded. you can’t go wrong. even if it is a bad review and its wrong, the other three oppinions should def. balance it.

i might write a few once summer starts; maybe someone could do mine

(G0-Gerbil) #19

The problem with public voting is that it’s easy to distort with fanboys. I have to say I’m simply not a fan of that method, or certainly I woulnd’t give it any weight.
But reviews from certain ‘semi-trusted’ individuals would be a better idea.
Or at least, even if thereveiwers aren’t trusted, they should be consistent, which helps generally.

(MadJack) #20

I call it Fanrage

Like, for exemple, someone seeing one of Neotic’s map will just go around be awed by the map… He’s a big fan of Neotic and won’t be able to properly review. Or they just don’t want to see? I don’t know but I do know there are lots of people like that. They’ll give average notes to most people and even be pretty fair but when they come to a prefered mapper… you get the picture
