Restrictions for tweaking configs in Doom 3?

(Cerebrate) #1

I heard that the multiplayer part of Doom 3 has a lot of restrictions when it comes to tweaking the game with console commands. Like FOV. Hate to sound like a 14-year-old, but WTF?!

I mean, I love tweaking the config! So much that I nearly consider it a hobby. Why should we dedicated players suffer because neophytes don’t have the time or brain capacity to do it? It’s like making it impossible to tweak your car engine in Formula 1 because your mom doesn’t know how. It just too dumb.

If this is the engine we will have RTCW2 on, then I don’t know. I guess that it’s up to each developer what they want to allow players, but still, silly id. Pretty graphics is for singleplayer. Fps and ping matters to those who care.

Ok, enough judgement. Let me hear a straight answer before I go on with more bashing.

performance tweaks are one thing. advantage tweaks are another.

So you don’t believe those two things are related in any way?

Well, a lot of people hate to have totweak their game to look like pong from '82 just to stay competitive. I’ve been like you, I loved to find new things to tweak, for performance and visibility and ended up playing with a config that looked like shite in game but with great visibility and fps. But I’ve changed my mind about it nowdays, for example I didn’t like that you where forced to have lightmaps enabled and lower picmip settings in ET. But when I really started playing the game, I noticed it didn’t matter much and actually enyojed the better graphics. So, in the long run I think it’s a good thing.

example:

using a low quality texture setting in order to squeeze some fps out of your old c64 so you can be on an even playing field with the alienware punk is perfectly justifiable and nobody with brains could begrudge you for desiring that ability.

setting your fov to 360 so you can sit in one spot and let your victims come to you, rather than learning to scan your surroundings (a basic, core skillset of a deathmatch) with a normal fov is an advantage tweak, and could certainly be argued against without seeming like a fool.

and let me stop you before you say “but everyone can do it”. that’s not the point. just how easy do we want to make something as basic as a DM game? shouldn’t it require at least a bit of effort to be considered “skilled”? nobody should be able to warp reality and see more of their surroundings than they were meant to see. your mouse has a horizontal axis, i suggest moving it along that axis rather than setting FOV so wide that you don’t have to.

shrug just my opinion

Theres cvar tweaks and there’s cvar exploits, and there’s a (large) grey area in between.

can play quote tennis and fire the same thing from an alternative viewpoint* straight back: “why should we normal players suffer a major disadvantage because geeks want to exploit the hidden game settings?”

  • note i didnt say it was my view, which i think I’ve explained & backed up quite thoroughly - tho ofcourse that only applies to ET, different games come with different communities and beleifs, etc.

I certainly beleive that the line has to be drawn somewhere.

F1 was maybe a bad example since there is a huge amount of restrictions on what “tweaks” they can do to every part of the car.
