Request: 360 controller on PC

(Achromatis) #61

I would also like to request 360 controller support. SD didnt properly support the 360(not split screen, no LAN, no clan support, no lobbies) so I was getting it for the PC.

I understand SD is kinda new to making console games so Ill cut some slack with my expectations there, but controller support for the PC is kind of a big deal. What other features are missing that you havnt mentioned or were implied for marketing or have outright lied about? Ive never played a previous SD game so this is your first presentation to me, and its not looking very good.

I know this has been said before, but in the politest way possible, it has to be asked again  You do understand that by playing Brink PC on a controller, you’re at a huge disadvantage compared to keyboard/mouse players, right? Not only that, you’re a burden to your team - because you’ll be dying, a lot. Usually when crossing an open area, and lacking the ability to turn around in time and fire back.

Unless you have to use a controller, doing so will not be the best way to play Brink on a PC

What does any of that matter? I want to play the best version of the game with the controls that I want, that the creator of the game himself says he uses from time to time. I don’t want to play the inferior console versions with less resolution, framerate, AA, etc…

I want to play the PC version with all the bells and whistles, with my controller. Its obviously possible to do so as Wedgewood himself says he has done it and the game was previewed for over a year with the 360 controller on a PC.

If Brink is playable via controller through console commands, can someone at SD at least give us those commands so we can play with a controller? Extremely frustrated over here. We are paying customers who want to enjoy Brink with controls of our choice. Please SD, respond to this issue and let us know if you can help us out here.
Do what I have done, use Xpadder, if you don’t know how to use it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NayxRfY4V0

If you need to learn more advance ways, just practice with it a little bit.

I have a setup that kinda works, it just takes a little getting use to, but honestly Splash Damage needs to come out with support for the controller. I love the game, but WTF…
How is the Xpadder support? I’m guessing there is no assist, etc. Does it feel good at all?

I really want to play but I can’t just sit back and wait for some SD console commands.

No one asked you which input method is better-we’re asking why isn’t it enabled when one of devs states that he uses it. Also the g4 reviewer mentioned playing it with a controller on pc at quakecom. Wth?

(flamemc) #66

Hi, im a pc gamer that loves the xbox360 controller, now i know that the key/mouse is way more accurate, but im a better gamer with the pad, i often come in the top 3 players on black ops with the pad.

Ive been looking forward to this game since i saw the trailer, i love the style of the game and was reallly looking forward to it, but there seems no difinative answer as to wether you can use a controller, it just says its not suppported.

Now i know software like xpadder works, but it will never feel right, i used it for mw2 on the pc, and it just dosnt feel right.

Come on, it cant be that hard or costly too add in 360 support. Please please either tell me how to add it in myself or let me know before i purchase the game from steam wether it is gonna support it or not.

(flamemc) #67

Can no one give a definative answer on this, why do game developers never answer questions in regards to there products. And why can little small time developers add controller support, ive been waiting for this game for ages and i knew my expectations where too high.

(dazman76) #68

Nobody asked me anything, but since we have an open forum here, I thought I’d try a long shot at reducing the number of players getting constantly killed due to input method choice  Pointless I’m sure, but you can’t blame a man for trying.

I genuinely think SD made a late decision to remove the support, because of the reason I stated. Mixing mouse/keyboard players with controller players for an FPS is - plainly and simply - not very clever. When people make a choice to play FPS on PC, they do it because the mouse/keyboard option is available - and is the best way to play an FPS. Mixing in controller players is the surest way of un-levelling the playing field - and having a level playing field is pretty important for this kind of game.

I do think SD made a big mistake allowing people to use the 360 controller on the PC at these shows. I’m sure they did it with the best of intentions, but it does seem to have backfired to an extent. However, this act doesn’t constitute a guarantee that these controllers will work with the game - it has simply been interpreted as such. I don’t know if SD have ever actually stated that the final game would support the 360 controller - but I’m happy to be proven wrong on that score

Yes please! I know it’s not as precise as a mouse, but extended gaming on a mouse is painful for my wrists. I’ll try out the config file workaround, but full-fledged support for XInput would be fantastic.

I don’t want aim assist, as I don’t expect to get a handicap for my choice (and to be honest, it’s annoying when aim assist doesn’t realize who I really intend to aim at). Easy-to-configure support would be more than enough for me.

(Feather5tone) #70

Why is there argument of KB/M vs. pad in here? We’ve heard it a million times and we don’t care about your opinions. There are over 4,600 views of this thread (second only to the reviews thread) - obviously there are a lot of people who want this fix and were expecting it to be in the game from the beginning. I find the lack of help or even acknowledgment of the issue from SD is bothersome. I’ve played shooters for 10+ years with a pad and I personally feel more comfortable with it. Given a choice I will choose it over KB/M. “Convincing” doesn’t play a part in the decision - how can a personal opinion be wrong? To the trolls - stop wasting your breath and my time when I read this forum to find a simple answer. Thanks.

Now to get back tot he actual question…

I found this posted on the Steam forums but I still can’t get Brink to recognize the file. I’ve created new autoexec.cfg file using it, and also tried pasting it into the brinkconfig.cfg file to no avail. This apparently came from someone at SD, so could someone there please help us get it implemented? I’m missing a step somewhere and it’s driving me batty. Cheers.

I found a note that said: Try changing that seta in_joy1_device “232429” to 0 or 1. So seta in_joy1_device “0”.

I’ve tried a lot of variations to no avail - anybody out there actually want to help us crack this and not just try and shove a keyboard down my throat? I will love you forever and make you cupcakes.

(flamemc) #71

I was hoping for this kind of fix, im gonna look over at the steam forums.

Now i do want to address what @dazman76 said
I understand why they wouldn’t want a completely unfair advantage for k/m players when playing against controller players, but what people also need to understand is the pc is slowly becoming a focal point for gamers. A lot of people are using there TV’s as monitors like me. Also a lot of console gamers are switching over to the pc for various reasons, you only need to take a look at the PSN to see why.

Also I’m now going to be disadvantaged by having to use k/m as I’ve never liked k/m even though its more accurate, , and I prefer the controllers more laid back style.

(dazman76) #72

There isn’t - we’re discussing it, not arguing about it. There’s also a difference between arguing and simply disagreeing - for most of us anyway  Certainly there’s no heat or animosity from most of the posters in this thread.

It’s a public forum, on the interwebs - you’ll hear other people’s opinions whether you care about them or not - use the ignore function if it bothers you so much, that’s what it’s there for. Also, a lack of caring from the reader doesn’t make an opinion invalid. << Here’s a wink smiley, just for you.

@Flamemc - fair points with the players crossing over. I agree there are reasons for the mixing, but I still don’t think it’s a good thing - I guess time will tell

(Feather5tone) #73

You missed the point entirely. This is not a thread asking for opinions. It is a thread asking for help. If you aren’t going to help I suggest you waste someone else’s time - you are just pissing us off more. And thanks for reminding me about the ignore function.

On topic: “Nail” from the Bethesda forums posted this (in addition to the config list above):

autoexec is how we set up our configs in idtech games, and many others

profile.cfg
// *********************************************************
// This file is managed by Brink and will be
// overwritten when logging in and out
// Any custom commands or bindings should be put into ‘autoexec.cfg’
// in the same folder as this file
// *********************************************************

Now, I can find the profile.cfg but adding the autoexec.cfg to this directory doesn’t do anything

(profile.cfg is actually called brinkconfig.cfg through the Steam directory [Steam > Userdata > ******** > 22350 > local > base])

I feel like we’re getting close, but without any acknowledgment on the issue we might just be stuck running in circles… I’ll keep an eye on the Steam and Bethesda forums and report back here if I find anything. Thanks.

(flamemc) #74

Thanks mate, im keeping my eye on this thread, i dont know why the developers havnt given a definate answer. Its not a hard question, Im sure theres a way it can be done manually though.

(babaie12) #75

Man I cant belive I got this game for PC and now I have to use this damn M&KB I hate it so much just makes the game so ****y for me cant relax hunched over a desk fix this !!! whats up devs give us a god damn answr !!!

(flamemc) #76

Same here mate, im not a fan of k/m either, why would they leave it out of a game, when 90% of developers add it in.

(flamemc) #77

bump bump bump

(Melsnah) #78

Probably not an actual statistic, but I agree with the point you make regardless. I really hope there is controller support soon or at least someone figures out this .cfg file thing.

(flamemc) #79

No thats not an actual stat :o, but you get my point, it does seem like most pc games have the support now.

One of the reasons ive not bought a console in 4 years, even though i used to be a console fan.

(hideinlight) #80

Check the configs files, is there an engine.cfg type file?
