Report a cheater

(therapiist-_-) #1

Hey is SD going to add “Report a cheater” like call of duty black ops… I dont know if the company really look into it… but im starting to think that all game developers should start adding it into the game… I really cant stand people trying to find a way to mess up the fun in the game at all…

(SockDog) #2

Problem is investigating the report and also separating petty/ignorant reports from genuine ones.

I suggested stuff in the past to basically allow the community to have tools to flag and so filter these people but it wasn’t met well here and it’s too late for Brink to implement anyway. As it stands you’re stuck with needing good server admins and holding VAC catches cheats.

(tokamak) #3

Starcraft 2 has this as well. Though the investigation is damn easy because the dev guys can simply load up the replay and watch the match to see if fishy things are happening.

(therapiist-_-) #4

I can understand it might be too late since they already work on brink… im pretty sure they can come up with something, i think…

(Slade05) #5

It only leads to abuse, sane serveradmin is the only tool we need.

(Vaporman) #6

It really does not matter. There will always be “cheaters”, bug exploiters, hoarders, and the like. Key is to avoid them if you know who they are.

How does these “report a cheater” system work? Do they send demo’s to the devs? I can’t imagine wanting to saddle yourself with looking at everyone’s demo who thinks they encountered a cheater. Then again, maybe they just filter the list and only review those with a player with multiple accusations? If there’s something like that in place I can see how where it could be effective. Obviously devs want to make sure cheaters don’t take over and destroy a game, so they do have an incentive, but the other option would be a similar button that delivers the demo to the server adminstrator instead, along with the filtering tools and a count of how many complaints have been made against that player over-all.

With VAC’s delayed bans it will be up to server admins (ones who know what to actually look for) and possibly vote kicks as well. Not really familiar with VAC, it seems like it’s a pretty big failure in MW2, so hopefully whatever issues that are there in that game aren’t in Brink (and I know MW2 doesn’t have dedicated servers and that could be a big part of that problem).

What would be cool is if more games shipped with demo capabilities where you could hit a button and automatically start recording from 2 minutes previous like you can do with Fraps. I know the demo would have to be running constantly in order to do this, so you may choose not to do it if it affected your framerates, but it would help from having demo on by default and having a plethora of demos on your hard drive you have to manage (you’d only have the ones you wanted, and just the parts you wanted). Would be handy for players to send a clip of a suspected cheater to a server admin.

Even though it’s still open to abuse and poor judgement calls and there are always going to be really good players being unfairly accused of cheating ( although I’m sure I’ll never be one of them  ), it would be good to have more tools to detect and prevent cheating.

In black ops, all your games are recorded serverside via their theater thingy. You can go back and watch/edit your replays from all your past matches. You can watch from anyone on the servers POV as far as i know.

Besides the whole abuse thing, it seems like a VERY COOL system… granted the game is totally unplayable due to the lag/stutter… not to mention COD games are perdy lame anyway :).

This would be VERY handy in Brink to catch cheaters. As it is now, its next to impossible to get a suspected cheater to cough up his personal demos. (ie Sirdark…lol). All a cheater had to do in ETQW was to refuse to submit his demos and there was basically no way to prove anything… private cheats ftw!

(coolstory) #9

No…just no…there’s vac and server admins for that kind of stuff.

What brink need is a brink tv, so admins can watch if anyone was hacking.

Please no, The amount of times I have been accused of cheating in the past is annoying enough yet with a system like this its just open to abuse.

Some people just can’t accept that some people are better than them so they have to be cheaters. Nevermind I have been playing FPS games for over 15 years, nevermind I have been playing comp for over 7 years. No that experience is not important, i must indeed be a cheater…

Yeah, that type of system is very cool for so many different reasons:

  1. Let’s people make their frag clips and brag to friends so much easier.
  2. Help with documenting suspected cheaters.
  3. May prevent people from accusing others of cheating in the first place by being able to watch from their point of view to see what happened.
  4. Help players to learn tactics by watching from better players points of view (btw BMXer, I very much appreciated that you always posted your demos after a match for this very reason).
  5. Help promote the game

Would be sweet. I recall the devs saying they wouldn’t do it when this came up 6 months ago or so, but they’d ‘welcome’ a mod or something like that, which i took to mean they’d offer help to the mod team who wanted to do it.

Just would be really cool.

(madoule) #12

please no, i’d prefer it simple as recent steam games handle it. admins or “client based admins” (see L4D2) or simple vote kick. that does it in my opinion.

(SockDog) #13

I might get a smack for this but I thought the Devs said it wasn’t really possible due to the engine to do something like a KillCam. I would suppose a voluntary mod could do it on the client side for the clips etc (which I think would be cool) but that wouldn’t solve the issue of cheaters who’d avoid any such mod or at least not share the incriminating data.

(therapiist-_-) #14

its just something to talk about… I’m pretty sure brink came up with something. I just dont want too see any games to go down the hill because someone in this world think its funny to ruin a game. I guess if someone find out a glitch in the game or any type of bug, we all just have to hope SD release a patch for it asap…

(Kinjal) #15

I hope for admins, new SLAC and…

(INF3RN0) #16

I like the Black Ops theater mode and demo viewing system. I doubt it is what affects the game’s performance, but if it’s something easy to implement it would be great for any game. It is very easy to determine skill vs cheats when you see from their POV. Plus demo replays are just an awesome feature to have :).

Being accused doesn’t mean you’re being bothered with it. If you’re clean, you’re clean.

(BMXer) #18

[SARCASM]Yea, I mean like OMG that has worked sooooo totally well in the past… Clearly MW2 and CS are %100 hack free thanks to VAC… and the uber knowledgeable server admins in every other game with dedicated server have kept all those games hack free as well… Lets stick with what has been proven in the past. [/SARCASM]

(coolstory) #19

emm…every game has hackers and exploiters. You can’t stop someone from using a hack or exploit but at least you can votekick/kick/ban them so they don’t ruin the game for others.

There’s also the option of tking the hacker

(madoule) #20

exactly my point of view!
imo steam works pretty well, with its self-regulating structure plus VAC.
tho if your vote kicked for no reason at all (dispite your subjective lack of skill) like i was yesterday, it’s quite annoying.
