render bug?

(ouroboro) #1

i’ve noticed a strange effect on certain doors on certain maps, where i am able to see through them for a split second when they first come into view. it’s difficult to capture a shot of it, it’s so fast. but if i strafe back and forth so that an object is between myself and the door, i can repeat the bug in a sort of stuttering frame effect, which would allow me to basically see where i shouldn’t be able to.

at first i thought maybe it was something to do with my tweaked config, so i deleted everything and reset the game to all defaults, and reproduced it, using the first door i noticed it on - the axis door on the side of the library on venice.

i’ve made a little animation to demonstrate this:

pay no attention to the times displayed or the duration of the frames - i had to tap the screenshot key very fast while strafing quickly in order to catch this “on film”. the three frames here are not exactly sequential and are slowed down so you can see the bug better, but they represent the effect of me strafing out from behind an outcropping of wall and seeing through the door for a split second before it is “filled in” appropriately.

i’ve never used this to my advantage, but i certainly could if the opportunity presented itself. so in the interest of disclosing a possible game bug…

there you go.

feel free to ask about my hardware if anyone has an idea what it could be. all i can think of is graphics card, but mine is quite decent. then again my previous card was certainly fair or better, and i never noticed this with that card.

It also can happen if you go into the limbo menu and esc out of it.

(Sauron|EFG) #3

OMG CHEAT!!!1111

I’ve also seen this on a few occasions, but I’m not even sure you can see players through the invisible door (I never did).

(SCDS_reyalP) #4

I’ve seen this too.

(eq-Shrike) #5

I bet he uses it to look through the door of the axis ladies toilets the dirty wallhacker !!!

(Loffy) #6

xiit!

Excellent animation!
I’ve seen this too. And also, like said above, when leaving limbo menu: You’re at the back door on Battery, as Allied. Outside. You’re facing the door, standing some 10-15 m. away. For 2-3 seconds, you go into limbo (to check the map, and see if there are any allied coverts on the inside, preferably going for the generator). Then, as you leav the limbo, you get that “wtf the door is missing” phenomenon.

I thought I was the only one. Now I can sleep at night again. Xmas is saved. Nobel prize for you.

classic demonstration of pvs issues on poorly vis’d maps.

(Bongoboy) #8

Very nicely presented, ouro

I’ve seen it, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player through the missing door. But no one believes me. People in the office keep accusing me of deliberately using the “MS Messenger Wallhack” when I completely accidentally leave Messenger running while playing QIII-engined MP games. They forget that I am a doofus rather than an eveeel geniussss.

:moo:

(Sick Boy) #9

it’s like seeing through the 1st gate in fueldump from the caves

(Gimpsta) #10

… I see dead people ! :eek2:

(next_ghost) #11

I doubt u can see somebody behind the door even if they’re in front of them* when the door don’t show. Both door and anyone behind or in front of them is not in ur PVS as bani said and u can’t see them until they get into it.

*) when both person and door are in the same PVS cluster.

Actually, it’s a classic demonstration of pvs issues with well vis’d maps.

(bani) #13

poorly vis’d for players :twak:

(digibob) #14

It’s more of a gamecode bug really, we had intended to look into fixing that issue at some point, but didn’t have the time.

(Rain) #15

That’d be kinda odd to fix in gamecode, short of trying to predict where the player will be in (ping)ms and spawning a portal camera there so that the entities or sent. Or something.

(bani) #16

the best way to fix it is to fix the maps.

the only ways I can see to “fix” it in gamecode:

  1. make doors SVF_BROADCAST (maybe just the nearest one)
  2. make doors not use entities (eg use a configstring to track door status)
  3. place a portal camera at the nearest door.

but if you get door popup, you’re going to get player popup as well. so “fixing” the doors in gamecode only fix part of the problem (portal camera would solve that too, but meh.).

fix the maps! gamecode shouldnt have to repair map problems :bash:

(Fusen) #17

you have to think outside the box to fix these sorts of bugs, just don’t use doors in maps :]

(Sauron|EFG) #18

Do we even need maps? And gamecode?

(SCDS_reyalP) #19

Hmmm, could mappers fix this with vis dummies ?
