Remove the ****ing levels already.

Spot on with the graph +1

I’m at level 27 so don’t get the grief (yet), but players of 40+ often do. Sticks and stones and all that though. Level doesn’t actually mean that much - that level 2 could be fatal1ty in disguise (he was in the alpha briefly actually) ;).

(poiuasd) #42

He streamed the game quite a bit a month or two ago.

(Glottis-3D) #43

…and he sucked hard…

(DarkangelUK) #44

Wait, so wait a sec, just hold on, wait a sec… people don’t get better with play time?? Why do people practice stuff then! It means nothing obviously, after 3 - 4 hours you’ve reached your max potential and you won’t get any better at all no matter how long you play

(yes, this is me being a sarcastic dick towards your circlejerk of rank doesn’t = skill)

(Destroy666) #45

That’s exactly what I said - not sure why you mentioned balance issues in the 1st post. Removing levels won’t really influence/fix them.

As for pros, where you mentioned “nothing whatsoever” - I agree they’re are quite useless after lvl 10 right now, but they have a huge potential that SD is missing/ignoring. There are many things that could be introduced to make levelling up more rewarding:

 • bonuses for reaching certain levels, e.g:

[ul]
[li]some cash each time you gained 5 levels, so at 5, 10, 15, 20…[/li][li]a player-chosen (yes, not random…) golden loadout after reaching lvl 30[/li][li]a player-chosen special skin/loadout after reaching lvl 50 - by special I mean that you can get it only this way[/ul][/li]- some kind of a rank system which would be displayable on an image for signatures on forums or whatever
And much more, especially after new features are (hopefully) going to be introduced.

They would not only make levels more useful, but also encourage gamers to keep playing DB.

Unless you’re all completely inept and don’t learn or gain anything from repeated practice of a specific activity then yes, a higher rank is an indication that a person has increased skill in a game. By all means though, please find studies that contradict this notion, or find evidence of amateurs that participate in an activity frivolously that perform just as well as higher skilled people that participate in the same activity for hours on end and regularly.

(Destroy666) #47

I’m not sure if you were referring to me, but I don’t need any “studies”. I still play ET sometimes and on many active servers I see people with over 500000 XP who can hardly get 20% accuracy with SMG weapons. Levels/XP only indicate experience which is not always equal to skill. One player may obviously learn the game much slower than another and they don’t have to be inept - e.g. they may play just for fun with crappy hardware and low FPS, which doesn’t really let them improve.

(DarkangelUK) #48

It wasn’t aimed at you specifically, but I will say that only an utter fool would disregard the length of time experiencing a subject having an impact on skill level. Any pro-sport would call you a moron, so I don’t know why an e-sport would be any different. “Practice makes perfect”… unless you’re an online gamer elitist

Even if you study all your life, you won’t become Einstein.

(DarkangelUK) #50

Even if you spout nonsense, you wont become Einstein.

(Nail) #51

Einstein could study all his life and never become Tesla

here’s a puppy
.

(DarkangelUK) #52

He’d be a lot better at it than someone that barely studied though, which is my point

I’d just like to quote one guy from the other forums.
One thing I don’t see in the roundup - they briefly commented about hiding levels in pub servers. No plans for that, they want to resolve it by somehow separating high and low level players from each other. That is all they said.

Several problems with that:

 1. level =/= skill - separating players based on levels will never be a good idea. The only way this would work is by dividing players into 4 pools by level/skill - low/low, low/high, high/low, high/high. But why? Hide levels and divide by skill only - it doesn’t matter whether skill is based on game knowledge in high level players or pure FPS skill by low level players. What matters is performance, not some arbitrary, always going up number like account level.
 2. If what they mean is closing/restricting access to server browser and creating a pub matchmaking system then it will still not make any negatives of visible levels go away. People will still leave servers at the start because the other team has more levels. High level players will still get abused.
 3. Let’s just assume that they somehow solve this problem in a way I cannot see right now. Why not hide levels for now, as a temporary solution? It’s the simplest change there can be - hiding a few UI elements.
(Glottis-3D) #54

ppl do not have anything else exept for level to decide on skill.
public skill rating are not visible. ranks are not visible. but levels are.
and so they see what they see.

game should show ranks, (preferably ELO numbers) not levels.

(spookify) #55

I agree with all that is said. The time played aka your level should not be show on the Tab menu.

However maybe a season rank could be shown some where but possible not even on the menu…

If a person wants to see your Level and Rank make the Show Steam Profile show you.

OR

Add another Command Line that says “Show Dirty Bomb Profile” and that will take them to that players profile page and which shows ranks and Levels.

To which ever SD does Levels should be removed and of the salty player is curious about that player they can take the extra step and go to their profile to get the info rather then have it screaming there in their face on the score board.

(Szakalot) #56

this is a symptom of something else, which is the high skill variability in pub servers. Imo there should be no situation where a lvl50 is on the same server as bunch of lvl1-10s and a few 10+. Separate us by skill more, and the problem goes away (don’t imagine a lvl10 whining at lvl15, or lvl 20 at lvl30)

(spookify) #57

This is the magic of dedicated and open servers. If someone wants to go noob stomp they can. (Almost as a change of pace or view) Sometimes it nice to go on these servers and go 100-10 just to remind yourself that people suck and its fun to own them.

Another reason to noob stomp is multiple enemys aka Bullets magnates coming at you and you can fine turn your aim. Regain some muscle memory on how the spread and guns work. This is very hard to do in a high skill or balanced server because the fights are so fast.

sounds like bull to me, maybe you enjoy going 100-10 on a stomp, I find it really boring. In any case, its totally unfair to the other team, a lvl5 player who is still learning the basics should not be exposed to people with 1+ year of experience (unless they specfiically want to)

(ragnak) #59

Wouldnt changing max level 5 to level 10 solve a bit of issues ? At the moment min servers are often empty (not to mention that most of the time those are bugged with ghost player and its always 6v7 =/), if you join anywhere else you are getting insulted for having high level (which also happen on min level 10, as if they didnt know who is going to play against them) and new players get salty and leave because they can see your level.

I honestly see no decent reason for keeping levels public, i never rate people by level and no one else should since its meaningless and i think that having noob friendly zone to level 10 and just normal servers after that would help quite a bit.

(watsyurdeal) #60

I think we should remove levels purely so people stop making excuses as to why they are losing. I don’t think ranks should be shown either, unless it’s the end of a comp match.

Better yet, don’t show levels till the end of the match or in a lobby. This way people play blind and don’t go in with some precognition that they are destined to lose, when they can always work together and get **** done.
