RedEye's IR Goggles are too strong.

(immenseWalnut) #1

Not going to belabor this too much, I wouldn’t go so far as to call him OP, but he is certainly strong.

The major issue with him is that his IR goggles give too much of an advantage to anyone that can aim. I’ve been playing him all evening, and realised that no matter how much of the usual visual spam that is going off (Airstrikes, Grenades etc), I can see through all of it (something no one else can currently do) when the goggles are activated. What is even better is the people being hit in the face have no idea I am there (so they have little opportunity to dodge or fight back). And this game is flooded with visual spam.

Now sure, there are counters, and ways to deal with it, but there is also the combined effect of having 2-3 RedEyes on your team. You can spread out several Smoke Grenades with a bit of co-ordination to create a much wider cloud, and then use IR goggles to pick the other team off. This may change in future, when people learn how to counter/out-play him, but for the moment, he has the capability to be a wrecking machine for anyone that can aim accurately.

I am loving him at the moment, and I really like the way his Smoke Grenade has opened up new options for attacking (he is VERY brutal against turret campers) but his IR goggles give him an even greater advantage even without the smoke cloud. I can watch an Airstrike detonate, and then activate them to hit people trying to use the visual effect as cover to re-position. Shouldn’t an explosion have enough heat to affect the INFRA RED goggles???

Now, here is the fun part. I don’t wan’t the IR goggles nerfed, I just want the visual crap reduced so we can still aim without it interfering. It annoys me no end having to back off in the middle of a fight because of an explosion between you and your target, and it is really isn’t necessary to have so much visual gunk breaking up the action. It is just an unpleasant visual effect that we now have to put with in most games to make AoE explosions more exciting to make the advertisements more impressive.

Arguing that IR goggles should be able to pick up heat off of explosions (like in real life)
is similar to arguing that people shouldn’t be able to double, and occasionally triple wall jump (like in real life).

This is a game, and sometimes being a game not everything can make sense.
I think the only options here are to either keep it as is, or make it harder to see with the goggles when explosives are going off.

Reducing the effects of the explosives feels backwards to me, and unnecessary just to make IR goggles make more sense.

It’s called Situational Awareness and it’s a key skill in any shooter. The fact that my Bushy’s turret got the ACE (5 kills in under 15 seconds) award means people need to work on that. Same with anything new. Smoke cloud? Don’t go in it and you know there’s IR goggles looking through it. Take cover.

(triteTongs) #4

Can’t fps/comp configs disable airstrike clutter already?

Or was that clamped?

(immenseWalnut) #5

People don’t need to go into it. Do you think I just stand there, waiting for an idiot to run in so I can melee him???

I can stand in it, or outside of it, and I can see through it, and all the other visual gunk, and land consecutive headshots against players who can’t see me (except for other RedEyes).

I have yet to see this guy in the hands of a pro, but given what I can do already after a few hours, I can see nerfs are needed. His IR goggles are the main culprit, because they can be used in a variety of situations, not just with his smoke cloud.

Having explosions affect his IR would go a long way to making him more evenly balanced, are his goggles designed to see though every particle effect, or just the smoke?

The only saving grace is that the duration and cooldown of his goggles compensates for his advantages.

(moonlitAbility) #6

I dont think its any more powerful than say a space laser or bunch of arty strikes. He is supposed to have a high skill cap and be a thinking mans sniper

(XavienX) #7

Huh I expected Smoke grenade nerf rants, not IR goggles…

(immenseWalnut) #8

He does have that, his smoke nade is better used in the right situations (i.e. turret pinning your team down, pop your nade, step out, frag the gunner etc).

His IR goggles give him a very clear, and unobstructed view, no matter what is happening (normal visual spam etc). And his weapon is very good, as long as you control your trigger finger and don’t spam your shots.

(moonlitAbility) #9

Theyre also disorienting, have a short duration, and make things like enemy turrets or your own smoke hard to see

(immenseWalnut) #10

No mate, they really don’t.

(stealthyBass) #11

Terrible idea given how much explosive spam occurs in this game.

(Backuplight) #12

Beyond not echoing realism, I don’t really see an issue. If people are out in the open, they’re vulnerable to getting shot. Redeye being able to see them through clutter is, surely, the entire point of his ability.

(immenseWalnut) #13

You mean reducing the particle effects of explosion spam to make it a better experience for everyone, or making it all visible in his IR goggles?

Given the power of his rifle, one of the two needs to happen.

(Timba) #14

I like this class the way it is. Don’t change anything on it please. I already miss my Phantom. No need to nerf a class just because of a 10% that consider them OP.

(Szakalot) #15

People don’t know yet you can blow up the smoke.

Back in the day when redeye was readily available, any high-level effective plays would soon meet a nader or two blowing all your precious smoke away before you turn the goggles on.

(misspo) #16

People complaining already

(tulipRowboat) #17

Honestly, if it were up to me I would remove both Vasili and Red eye’s ability to see the enemy position. I hate that about them, and it slows the game play down quite a bit. Since everyone knows the exact moment you will turn a corner, or enter a room etc, you have no choice but to advance really slowly.

I love this game for its fast paced gameplay. Not the slow, methodical, military shooter esque gameplay…

How could anyone not know that, when it was CLEARLY mentioned in the roll call video?

And you don’t need to stand in the smoke for it to be a barrier, you can see Nader firing her nades through her explosions and take her head off while she is still swatting your smoke.

(greatFactory) #19

if something is op IF… there is no way of knowing this for sure untill the new merc is familiar to everyone, and how to counter him becomes general knowledge.

sure some people like you really can whip some ass using him but thats true for most mercs the general public will not use him as you at least have to have a decent aim…

imho ir goggles arnt op and you rarely (so far) see redeye topping the scoreboard only part of it that concerns me a little is the spotting part. that part should only work trough smoke

and so far even if red eye players hide in the smoke they usually stand in the same spot as they would if they hadn’t any so just aim there and get a wallhackusation

Having them show up in the IR goggles. It’d just be masses of white quite often and would make them rather useless at times.
