Recording a demo - option

(RasteRayzeR) #1

Hi folks !

I’ve made a few researches on the forum and it seems I cannot find anywhere anything about recording a match.

In Quake III for example you could bind to keys the option to start/stop recording a demo, which is nice if you want to watch replays, analyse the game, or create fantastic videos showing off your skills to the rest of the world ^^

So maybe I’m just ignorant about it if it already exists in DB, but else I’d like to see such an option in a quite near future.

We will have some form of demo support in future although it’s unlikely they’ll be client-side recorded demos. We already have the alpha servers recording demos of every match that is played though

Would be cool if the support is akin to something like Theater Mode in Black Ops 2. Blew my mind how friendly that was for watching demos. Especially helpful since it records all recent matches automatically.

but but… how are we gonna get our demos then :frowning:

i don’t think server hosters will host server demos :frowning:

i don’t think server hosters will host server demos :([/QUOTE]

Homefront used the same method and it worked without a single problem.

(Ashog) #6

yeah well who hosted demos then? I haven’t played HF so I don’t know.

The server providers provided some space for them, you could either download them ingame, via a history, or you could just download them like any other demo on the Internet if you got the link from the Server Admin, and then upload somewhere else/save them.

(Ashog) #8

Hmm, if ingame, that should be good, no need to quit game to save or to replay it.

(Anti) #9

Our hope is that we can provide a service that works something like Dota 2 replays, so the servers retain the demos for some time and you download the ones you want to keep from them in-game. That’s the goal at least, although we still have a lot of design and investigation to do into this sort of system so I won’t promise anything

This is a really nice idea to use the server record, much better than a client side I think.
But all the players playing the recorded match need to get some sort of access, not only the servers admins.

(woll3) #11

Imo, via the Launcher would be a good option, since you can just download them via FTP, also some sort of demo managing would be quite nice, and maybe a “auto download demo” tickbox or something. And since the demo saving has worked for Kaos Studios, i guess it will work for you too, isnt the demp record/playback function already a part of UE3?

(RasteRayzeR) #12

bah, go for TCP download, it’s faster ^^

(Jamieson) #13

Would you be able to download other people’s demos? Because if you could that would be a very good anti-cheat function.

(Ashog) #14

From what I get these will be only server demos. So no client demos.

(Ruben0s) #15

You will have to pay for looking at your demos.

(Seanza) #16

Am I right in assuming that if this doesn’t work you’ll enable client-side recording? If not, I may need to have some stern words with you Mr. A. Pop.

(en2ie) #17

I assumed server side demos record all players… so you would be able to see the game from anyones perspective. Or maybe you mean I could view all games played by another player?

(scre4m.) #18

this would be perfect

(Anti) #19

Server-side demos are capable of showing you the POV of all players who were in that match

(Ashog) #20

…which will be not enough to deal with cheating problems, as imho server demos will only possibly indicate some aimbotters, but not reveal the graphics cheaters (wallhax, enemy indicators, etc). So I guess no, Jamieson, the full anti-cheat protection will be still needed. And a better one than the lousy PunkBuster
