recommended cvar tweaking to improve FPS?

(Cyber-Knight) #1

I’m no expert with my cvar, but asking some of the more experienced people which cvars work the best to improve my FPS. Of course I would like to stay within most PB settings. And I would not want to turn my game into Pong graphics and insane brightness.

Currently I use the “Fastest” settings combined with:
/r_picmip 3

do these cvars affect FPS? or just purely affect the brightness/reflection/shadow of things?
/r_mapoverbrightbits
/r_overbrightbits
/r_intensity

And if I get rid of the atmospheric affects (though I don’t really want to cuz it’s part of the game) does it dramatically help FPS? What about stage with no rain or snow (ie. Oasis, Goldrush), does disabling atmospheric effects make a difference in those maps?

I’m on ADSL connection if that helps. I’m not too familiar with how /rates and other packet stuff works.

My specs:
P3-450MHz
448 MB SDRAM
Hercules 3D Prophet 4000XT 64MB
(yes laugh, but I can still kick a lot of ass in this game and consistently get akimbo pistols on 3 map campaigns)

those are just for adjusting ur screen brightness and such, nothing to do with fps.

yes, getting rid of the rain and snow helps fps alot, but only on radar and railgun. don’t worry about “it’s part of the game” i’ve had that option turned off since day one, so have all the guys i play with regularly.

i have my rate set to 25000 and snaps at 40, but u may want to play around with setting ur rate lower since ur system is slower. and i would start out with snaps at 20, see if that works before trying 40.

Reduce your clock cycles used to prebuffer sound:
s_mixahead .1-.2

Should eke out a couple FPS.

would this solve the problem where the sound cuts up real bad when it gets going really slow (less than 8fps) j/w, that would be well worth my time, cuz nothing pisses me off worse than that, lol

while adjusting rates and snaps is great and all, but how do you actually test it if it’s doing better or worst for you?

I mean, it’s sometimes hard to notice some differences, and a guy throwing an airstrike with 40 ppl on the server has a lot more variables than just network tweaks that determine my FPS.
