That’s a VERY good point and to be honest, I have no answer to this. I’ve had this discussion frequently on the Quake Wars forums and this argument always stumped me. There’s nothing you can do as a developer to stop people from using external, physical aides.
I agree that what’s going on now is an inconsistent approach, but it’s an inconsistency that favours the way I like to see the game run as the disadvantage of having a useless ironsight mode completely discourages people to turn off their gun models.
My biggest point here though is that, who is really harmed by not being able to turn of their weapon? I don’t see anyone suffering a disadvantage, I only see a leveled ground for all players.
Well I’m using ui_showgun 0 right now, and I’m not using a physical aide, I just ignore iron sighting for the time being and that’s fine as long as you’re using the Carb and pistols. It doesn’t really give me an advantage though as iron sighting has its uses since you can’t use crouched aim from every vantage point. I don’t do it to have an advantage over anybody, I do it because it feels right to me and it’s how I’m used to playing games online. Maybe I’m just longing back to the days of Rogue Spear/Ghost Recon? But using it here limits me in what weapons I use and how I use them, as long as I don’t put a dot on my screen.
And I really don’t find it aesthetically pleasing to have that ugly lump of a texture there, and the animation of the arms when parkouring isn’t really a pretty thing to look at either regardless of your settings. I really find the game to be more pleasant to look at with guns disabled. Again, that’s just down to preference.
My points are that the option is in there, right now it’s exploitable, and there’s an easy fix for it by enabling models while zoomed that won’t affect customization options or really change the game much from the way it is now. Having it in the options menu would also be a very good thing.
Anyway I think the poll kinda speaks for itself, especially considering that “no” and “don’t know” are on the same button in a cross platform forum.
