Rant: Terrible Experience!!

(TFate) #1

 A little while ago I was playing on a pub server. I was an Allies field ops and not a bad one either. Our team was getting pounded by the Axis (the teams were 8-5)

There were two particularly annoying Axis players who would always panzer themselves in the tunnel and kill us, as well as one of our players who didn’t like losing and switched to Axis because balanced teams was off. One of our players was complaining, and the panzer Axis guys were like, bla bla we can do whatever. So me and an engineer snuck through the tunnels and I naded him over the walls. After a couple seconds there was the ā€œdynamite planted at the fuel dumpā€ message and the Axis started complaining. Then they called a vote for ā€œRestart Mapā€ and I was totally pissed because it passed!! Then I got disconnected because of some illegible server message thing. GRRR!! I hate these people who love the Axis because they only have to sit on their ass and camp in the tunnel! And they had the worst sportsmanship ever. GRRR…

(evilsock) #2

I always prefer playing GoldRush as Allies - same for Oasis tbh

Hate ppl who try to have the map_restart near the end when their losing badly - hate the one hit pansers as well - you know the ones, they always ā€˜vapourize’ themselves as well - panserpussies , wtf 's that all about ? Watsermarks piss me off the most - server disconnected blahblahblah watermark doh.pk3 missing etc. etc…

i hate it when the teams are uneven and you sit there shouting asking for even teams and no ones joins the other team

Especially when it’s the offense that is a couple of men down. If defense is short you at least don’t have to wait 20 minutes for map change (when it’s a bit more likely that players switches team).

(Psycho Al) #5

Last night I whipped off a polite ā€œTeams.ā€ when I was waiting to respawn and instantly got told to ā€œstfuā€.

I’m often guilty of not changing over when I could though. It’s just sooo hard to force yourself to be a decent person when you’re in the flow on one side. :frowning:

(pgh) #6

I dont mind changing unless I know im important to the team. If teams are unfair, i find it would normally be best if the last person who joined would switch… its a bastard when yourself and some others on your team get a plan and get the teamwork goin then one goes of to help other team and were left stranded  but then again, props for the sportsmanship and willingness.

Another good thing is I get that used to seeing team m8s being tk’d by me when I switch its an advantage cos I still go for the team m8s being the NME now… muhahaa…

(MuffinMan) #7

that’s exactly the reason why it’s great to have an own pub server!

join us at 62.4.74.142:27980

nice bunch of players and people who keep calling dumb votes get kicked (not necessary to say their votes are cancelled)!

The problem is I’m restricted to non-pb/obj & sw servers until I upgrade to 512 RAM. Hopefully very soon… like tomorrow.

(Chappy) #9

Having low RAM shouldn’t restrict you from playing on campaign servers, to the best of my knowledge. Is there some other reason you can’t play on campaign servers?

(Psycho Al) #10

Well if he only has 128 then it would be a problem as I’m not sure he’d be able to up the com_hunkmegs above the default with any success. If he has more than 128, however, then he needs to experiment with that to solve his woes… possibly.

(pgh) #11

Always at least 1/3rd of your Mem. Used to have 128 when playing Quake 3 and I used hunkmegs 96 with no problems. (16mb 4x ATI Rage Card too at the time, followed by the ever meaty, 64mb Gf2 :>) As they said though, and imo even with 128mb Mem, you should still be able to at least get on the server with a few tweaks here and there… not saying itll run fine in game tho.

(TFate) #12

No, I mean it just takes forever to load (around 2 minutes per map). Q3 loads in a cinch, but of course the maps are tiny and it’s much simpler.

And yeah I can get onto servers… but when map changes I get disconnected due to unknown reasons… I figure this is because I time out. Actually I was playing on Shit Storm the other day and my computer ran pretty smoothly but the maps still took a while to load.

Ah well hopefully this will be fixed soon…

EDIT: Ooh, didn’t realize that com_hunkmegs thing. I’ll have to try it.

(Fusen) #13

I tried playing CoD with 256 once when was testing to see if my 512 stick was bit dodgy and its so crap to play with that little ram you constantly jump around as if you had a 500 ping

(SylverDragon) #14

If I can, I need to play dumb for a moment. What does the com_hunkmegs do, and, more importantly, is there a good rule of thumb to figure out what it should be set at?
My own system has a gigabyte of RAM in it, and I hate to think that ET isn’t taking advantage of that fact.

(sirlagalot) #15

One time I was kicked from a game server, for the negligable crime of accidently killing half my team with a flamethrower! THE NERVE OF SOME PEOPLE!

going on a FF off server is bad news from the start

It defines the amount of memory the game will use (someone can provide a more technical explanation if you want one) nad basically affects performance by determining how much can be kept in RAM at any one time. As I & others have mentioned, it can prevent maps loading correctly and can really hammer the load times or performance with heavy swapfile usage.

Pgh’s rule of thumb is - set it to a third of your RAM. There is an upper limit to it, after which the game won’t use any more, but I can’t remember what it is. Somewhere around 200 I believe. I use 200 with 512mb of RAM, but there’s no downside to setting it higher.

Tha main problem is that the default value is something like 56, and I found that ET would sometimes bugger up loading maps midway during a campaign, forcing me to reconnect. Other people have had similar problems that appear to be solved by hunkmegs settings.

Disclaimer - I may have made some factual mistakes but the general idea is correct, heh. At work so writing posts is not writing FTP applications & my brain gets confoosed.

Thank you. I’ll have to play around with that when I get home.

Don’t set it too high or you’ll have some problems starting up the game and loading maps. I set my com_hunkmegs at 128. Tried at 192 but it took way too much of my VM.
