Ranking at csport

(Vaticool) #1

At http://www.computerandvideogames.com they establish a ranking of players.
For the ones who don’t know there s a Find Player button in the left navigation bar of home page. (under csport.net ranking tab)

Does anybody know how they establish ranking ?
Is it only a sum of all reccorded XP for a player ?
Or something more complex ?

:???: :???: :???:

Quake has a similar ranking system (appropriate for a DM type game maybe), which also works for RTCW. It uses the player’s score to decide rank, so I can only assume this system is similar.

However, imo, it doesn’t matter one little bit what a player’s “rank” is according to this system. E.T. is a team game and the XP system is easily abused, so who cares what the individual’s score is? A Cov-Ops who just goes through the “kill enemy -> steal uniform -> kill enemy” cycle can build up a shed-load of points, whilst making bugger all contribution to the Team.

It can only be based on getting scores from the server. In other words, it is completely meaningless. It only measure points, so doesn’t take into account whether you are winning or the skill of your opponent.

Their RTCW rankings also seemed biased to time played. For a long time ‘wolfplayer’ was their top rated player for RTCW.

Oh dear if thats all meaningless what happens if you aren’t even in their records :eek3: .

[=O=]SMYLER you are most likey in their stats. ( ok i looked , your there). Csports is just another “for fun” ranking system, It is kinda fun to see where you stand. Its especially cool when ya are #1 -The TOP for days. yes it rates by points (FPM-frags per minute, in ET XP per min) from the game. If you beat someone above you on the ladder- you also move up faster. It is fun when you are up in the top 10 or so, and go look for the people above you, because they are really the ones you have to beat to move up. It will show you what servers they are playing and if they are playing right now. (kinda funnny to look up a forum loudmouth and find they have 462323 hours of cs in… or 0 hours of anything!)
It is fun when you are at the top, because you will find that you will go and look for people to play to move up and they will find you also.
But as with most big stats programs, it is just, as stated above, a fpm(frags/xp per minute) rating. i.e. only a record of points.

For fun is all they are.
It also holds the minutes played for each game you play and the ip’s as well as your different nics.

www.csports.net gave a good review for ET.

Just remember its not really accurate, unless you “know” the person(s) above you. i.e. it has been proven by clans that it is easy to “modify” the stats. In Q2 we found clans that would start there own locked servers, small map, 1 second spawn, and would just spawn rail to achieve high FPM. but then the sourcecode for q2 was publically released so was another story at the time…

Edit2: After I check your progression … yes it’s a fake snapshot

Does anyone know what servers these stats are taken from? Are they all ET servers or just certain ones

(I’m ranked 11,697 lol)

(artaxerxes) #12

Woohaa - I am between 4000 and 3000 outta a quarter of a million ranked players.

Sweet that puts me in the top 2% worldwide.

(BlackDeath) #13

my real name isnt even on there.

Thanks FstFngrz for the great explanation.
Our rankings work like this:

Every 3 minutes we look at each server and calculate the number of points each player scored during the 3 minute period. For ET read kills. For each player we work out how many players who rank above them on the ladder they have beaten and we raise their rank by that number. In addition at the end of each day we apply what we call “rank gravity” to all players that have not played for a while. Those who have not played for more than 7 days accelerate on each additional inactive day towards the bottom of the table.

For a full explanation of why we believe this is a good way to do it have a look at this article http://csports.computerandvideogames.com/story.asp?id=141

But above all FstFngrz has hit the nail on the head, it is for fun and lots of players, it seems, do have fun with it
