Random Idea for Turrets

So I was playing today during lunch (shhhh) and I had an idea for turrets that sort of based off some RTS games where the number of kills or amount of damage by the turrets are recorded. So, if you were to view over some AVT, if it had any kills or vehicles destroyed it would display that number only to the team. So something like:

Anti-Vehicle Turret: 6 kills

It’s not for any boastful reasons of course, but mainly so people can figure out optimal positioning for turrets and maybe get an idea as to which should be repaired in regards to priority.

Mostly I thought of this because I’ve noticed more than a few engineers running past disabled turrets without giving them a second glance, and I figured maybe if the importance of said turret was displayed a bit more in a language most people understand (frags!), then it would be a bit more of an incentive for them to repair. Just a thought.

Naturally if that happened I could see people “competing” for kills, but meh. I’d like to see a number to know how effective my placement was etc.

i dont think you can asses the effectiveness of a turret based on the number of kills it gets just as you cannot asses a player contribution to the team based on his amount of kills, sure they help but often avoiding fights can be a much quicker route to the objective

i think the problem of repairing turrets its similar to that of medics reviving and field ops giving ammo, from my experience with the demo there is very little teamwork on this level as people are more interested in fighting but as the game has more time i think players might start to change there attitudes sightly especially when the game moves from ramboing to xp whoring

Right well I never meant it to sound like it’s the one all be all way of finding out its usefulness, and plus I did say, “number of kills or amount of damage.”. I do think it would help as an indicator though, for example if you have your turret in perfect line of site but a little too far back for whatever it is you’re trying to attempt in destroying etc. Or if you hide your turrets in some trees/bushes, if find you continuously do more damage then when it’s exposed, it’s a good way to tell.

because of the pretty limited arrangements you can have of the only 2 turrets that actually target the enemy it wouldn’t take much work to get an idea of what is in range depending on where you place your turret

also as i said damage or kills is not a good indicator, a badly placed turret might rack up more damage because it is not posing an imitate threat to the attacking team so they might be less motivated to remove it from the battlefield. Also turrets can act as deter ants where a well placed turret might not actually get the chance to attack a player but makes him alter his route to the objective making it easier for the defense

lastly i don’t think you could use this then run 100 matches gathering data about about what turrets have done the most damage, the damage a turret gives is going to be very different depending on both teams approach to the map and with the near infinite strategy two turrets placed in the exact same situation could rack up loads of kills or be destroyed before getting the chance to attack anyone

for good use of turrets i think you should view them more as a weapon in the players arsenal rather than an independent base defense. If your turret is so vastly important (like AVT when stopping the MCP in valley) then you should deploy, defend and maintain the turret yourself rather than set it and forget it

I can see what you’re saying to a point but I don’t completely agree.

For the engineers sake who deploys a turret in a shitty place, that attains a fair amount of damage since a) it’s never been disabled and b) the entire length of time of the map has gone by - they will be able to better determine whether it was a good idea or not.

As for placing turrets in a position to deter the other team, great. Your turret likely won’t display a lot of damage but if you know its effectiveness in said location then you probably don’t care about how much damage it’s doing.

The whole idea of the damage/frags of a turret is NOT the end all be all of the placement. I just think it would be beneficial in a lot of cases.

Also, I wouldn’t expect this to be a tool where some clans do ‘research’ and find the very best placement for a turret and then bitch out eveyrone on their team who isn’t placing things exactly where they should be (because as you said there will be different data depending on both team’s approach to the map) but I don’t think it would hurt.

One example I know it could be beneficial for is placement of anti-artillery turrets to figure out a general best location for defending teams. Where to place it in say near the shield generator that defends the greatest concentrated area by your team most effectively where it’s not blatantly out in the open to be destroyed by some lame tank on top of a mountain every 3 seconds.

Again to reiterate, I think it would do more good than harm but this isn’t also a demand to SD to do this - just thought it was a cool idea.

I think its a good idea! Not entirely necessary but would not do any harm to have it included.
