'Raiders' public beta has arrived.

http://www.hummerdesign.com/et/ for more info and screens.

Also, you can DL the map here for now, although this link will be removed after a few days. I’m looking to get more hosting ASAP.

The pk3 is shy of 18 megs, mostly because we used many cusotm sounds, textures, and models. The map is quite large as well. The map doesn’t play large however. I shot for 6v6 - 8v8 style play, which works really well on this map.

Anyway, let me know what you think. This public beta should clean out any last bugs I hope! Email me at hummer@hummerdesign.com for bugs, or on IRC at #hummerdesign on gamesnet (or #splashdamage on quakenet).

The screenshots looks all neat and all that, but 18MB?!!?! - It is my opinion that a regular map should be 4-6MB large, 9MB at the most for good maps.

Well, let me know if you need me to host your files (already sent you an email.)

(hummer) #3

Once this is final, I plan to split the map into a campaign, consisting of 2-3 maps. So, there will be a “full” version, then the “campaign” version.

(chavo_one) #4

That is a small estimate on your part. My venice map will be around 20MB as well. A lot of the good custom maps for RtCW where around the 20MB size as well. When you start adding your own textures, sounds, and models, it adds up quickly.

@Hummer: I’ve been waiting for this one. Downloading now!

woo hoo … still waiting for Venice too … chop chop Chavo

Wow, very impressive map hummer! Not talking gameplay since I’ve just walked around in it but this map must have taken you a long time to do (in hours I mean, been reading about this map for quite some time). Lots of attention to deatails. Well done!

(hummer) #10

Yeah… about 4 months in my spare time… although I wasn’t the only one who worked on it.

(Drakir) #11

Had a quick run through it last nite, looks good. Liked the staff of Ra and the moving truck.

Beatiful map with lots of attention to light and architecture. Very nice! I think it´s way too large though, splitting it in two maps as you suggested would make it more playable and comprehensive. Two thumbs up for this massive work!

(MindLink) #13

I’ll have to disagree here.
We’ve played this map for quite some time with 8 to 16 ppl on our server and the action is quite localized because of the objectives. It plays very good as it is. The map is definitly NOT too large. Splitting it up into several maps would make it lose it’s atmosphere imho.
Thumbs up for Hummer.
And here’s a dancing banana for you too…

(blushing_bride) #14

sorry to sound like a noob but can someone explain what hunkmegs are. I don’t want to change my settings without some idea of what it does.

(chavo_one) #15

It’s the number of megs of ram that the game is allowed to grab for itself. When ET loads a map, it stores all the textures, sounds, etc in ram. If the total amount needed for the map is greater than the amount the game can grab, you’ll have problems.

(blushing_bride) #16

Thanks for the answer. i have a gig of ram what would be the recommended setting? If i change it will this effect anything else besides ET? What is the default setting in case i need to change it back? Thanks in advance

(chavo_one) #17

The default value is something like 64 or 56. Go into the console and type “/com_hunkmegs” (without a value), and it should tell you what you are currently set at and what the default value is. If you have more than 256MB of ram, then you can set it to 128 without problems. That should be more than enough to run any ET map.

@Hummer: I’ve been waiting for this one. Downloading now![/quote]

Well, it is all a question about how much time players want to wait while downloading the map. On my server I use an external fast web-server to dish out the maps and usually that means that the download speed is limited to what the local line at the end user can swallow. I know for a fact that a few users almost always drops when I load a new custom map in the game, and the longer the download period is the more people will drop out. A lot of servers does not have external download facilites, making the user wait for 20MB whilst downloading at 20KB/sec (hmmm… about 17 minutes?)

Anyway it naturally all depends on the quality of the map, if one map is incredibly good people will play it nomatter how huge the download is.

(Loffy) #19

Hummer, and comappers, it’s another classic map.
So many cool ideas and implementations. Job well done.
// Loffy

(seven_dc) #20

Loffy is right! The gameplay was action packed even on 3vs3 scenario. No need to chop the map up. The sub pen could have been more simpler because you are lost pretty easily on there.

The spawn points should have somekind of symbol or different design on them because during the play I ran several times to middle of spawning enemy. And It was like whooaah! Maybe some kind of platform or cave that would have exit only.
