Wow just found this entire thread today, was a very nice and enlightening read especially explaining many of the decisions made about this game from Rahdo so Thankyou.
I think the problem for you guys, is that you were backed by alot of money which also means alot of pressure to produce top level sales therefore you thought the lowest risk would be to appeal to the mass majority of the public making it accessible (Like you have previously stated). However the competitive community was looking for the next big competitive long term game. So basically the comp community forced themselves onto a public intended game ultimately leading to a large scale disappointment, as the skill ceiling was drastically lowered, the depth of game play was kept simple for players to understand, and core mechanic’s from previous games were oversimplified. This is a key problem for myself, the game is too easy that it simply just gets boring very quickly, it doesn’t test/challenge your skills in public servers, therefore will not have a long term future at least for myself.
At least now we have explanations for why the HUD is quite frankly awful, but still doesn’t make it acceptable to leave it in that state. If we had colour crosshairs it would eliminate a few basic issues of icons in the background filling our screen, as currently white crosshair ontop of white symbol’s = impossible to see where you are aiming at.
My main concern and something that quite frankly frightens me, is this mechanism of the ‘use’ key. For me as a medic in competitive play this probably has the largest impact out of anyone. Countless situations arise in every game of Brink i play of wasting precious time trying to change the white unavailable revive symbol into the circle to toss the syringe (Not to mention the numerous occasions it mixes up between reviving/buffing the hostage and your own player).
Coming up very soon i will be playing at Gamescom in the final of the Brink Championship, and just pray that one of my engineers doesn’t die in a awkward place where i can’t instantly toss him a syringe. This game mechanic can be the factor determining whether the objective gets done in time or not. While it’s not such a big issue in general public play as its just another meaningless match, for me there is 2500 euro’s on the line that could be lost just because of a buggy game mechanic. The main problem is that it’s out of the user’s control of whether the player is available to revive instantly (you have to move around the corpse waiting for an angle which lets you revive )
A minor issue i face, is why is it so dark inside buildings on Resort 2nd Obj. On release it never used to be so dark, but a recent patch suddenly made it really hard to see people indoors and i cannot see any reason for it to be. (I can provide Screenshot’s if you wish).
Lastly, just like to reinforce/back the core issues of needing weapon spread (tighter)/demo support/ pause function/1st person spectator features which we all know and wish to be implemented in this game despite your explanations of what’s limiting you from doing these core features.
