Rahdo's words - what happened here?

[QUOTE=coolstory;357054]"I’m happy it’s selling really well and getting decent play levels on console, and heartbroken it’s not as popular on PC, since we made a lot of sacrifices to make it as PC friendly as possible. And I’m very proud of the game. "

What sacrifices is he talking about?? I dont see any…

As for sacrifices, I am quite sure that actual animal sacrifice have no impact on game.

And being proud of special “children” is nothing to be ashamed of.

Looking forward to another game from you. "

Oh Look! A PC gamer insulting a SD developer! I have definitely never ever seen someone do that. -.-

what does this contribute to this topic?

Interesting thread, very interesting.

Rahdo came to the competitive community asking for their input, and addressing their concerns. For a year and a half, he gave similar answers to these ones. I hardly think that’s similar to ‘just another interview’, especially seeing as it’s the exact playerbase he’s addressing here that’s seen the biggest letdown from the game; being the competitive PC community.

(Smithers) #28

Wanting to still have a job at the end of a project isn’t a crime against gaming.

I guess consoles are where the money is at.

(Zanchile) #29

not u who ever typed the response to rahdos statment. and I guess more trolling than an outright insulting. the point is hes not being nice.

I’d like to know what these amazing games that people are playing on PC that have everyone’s standards so sky high.

The last game I played on PC was vampire: bloodlines. And it was excellent but no better then some xbox titles I’ve played.

Umm… Lets just start with RTCW… then there is W:ET and ETQW with pro mod was darn close… Then you have Quake 1, 2, 3/Live. All “amazing” games that “people are playing on PC”. They set the standard pretty darn high. You can’t argue that.
The problem is these games are all old and the developers are taking huge leaps away from what makes those games “amazing”.

There are literally NO console FPS games that even touch the games I mentioned when it come to skill level, competitiveness, and depth.

(knippon) #32

If the gaming industry doesn’t work out for Rhado, I think he would make for a great politician.

(DarkangelUK) #33

Rahdo has been involved in some very successful games, he tried his best with Brink, but I don’t think he’s had much experience the with the PC crowd (and he’s probably regretting it as well). I also think the past endeavors have been more open, which was the mistake he made with Brink had he not known the restrictions that were place… hence going quite quiet after a period. Let’s hope SD’s next venture means Rahdo can be himself again, a very outgoing and positive person, and the publisher of choice lets him stay true to his word.

(wolfnemesis75) #34

why keep mining and trolling the lake digging up every little scrap of debris to create more negativity? could be a case of “cutting off your nose to spite your face” situation here… during the design process things change, evolve, get scaled back, adjusted, and ultimately it makes little sense to regurgitate the past. live in the now. Brink is fun. so there.

(SockDog) #35

@OP

Things are said and changed during development. If we want these open discussions while a game is being made then we should be mature enough to not nit pick over them when details change. It’s probably for this exact reason that SD saw a huge clamp down on information in here and elsewhere.

I think in a more polite world we’d actually be able to ask what happened to feature X or Y, get an answer, even discuss it. In reality however it’d turn into a bitchy witch hunt and there would be much tears and scruffy hair.

This just makes me sad and if representative of SD’s policy then pretty much ends their relationship with the PC market. A shame really when it’s becoming so flipping obvious that there is huge potential on the PC if you only show some attention to the audience, be innovative in design and approach, rather than make half hearted “sacrifices” to them and expect them to be happy with it.

Besides the Wolf and QUAKE titles that BMXer listed, you can always go look at VALVe’s competitive FPS. CS 1.6 and Source are great competitive titles with lots of maps made for competitive play and you also have TF2 which VALVe added a tournament mode, did a beta with just competitive players to test out stuff, they work with the community a lot and post news about competitive tournaments on the horizon, and they even have a pretty snazzy demo editor in their game.

I’m actually really curious as to what happened to all of the stuff rahdo was posting about for over a year and how he never came back to mention none of this stuff he said he was gonna pass on or that we’d have isn’t even in the game at all. I wouldn’t have had to waste my money on another Wolf 2009 which would have been nice, because I could have given it to VALVe.

(Codine) #37

For all the people saying that development changes over 2 years:

Let’s not forget this game was delayed a whole year basically without a real reason given.

Also take a look at the old videos of this game. Everything looked so much better. It makes you what happened during the development with this game. All these cut out features were features that console players would never use or care for.

It’s quite obvious they just wanted to cash in on the console market. They shouldn’t have lied to the pc community about it at least.

SD is dead to the pc community.

(SockDog) #38

I think with the PC they admitted that PC specific stuff was going to be done near the end of the project. I expect as things pushed out further and further the PC specific stuff just got smaller and smaller. Frankly I think they’d have been much better off just delaying the PC version and adding this stuff in before release rather than pushing it under a bus and then looking at the PC gaming community for not appreciating the road kill.

But this is exactly what I mean about playing to the PC market that exists rather than the one you feel should exist. Had Brink been given 6 months longer to incubate, SD would have had time to get the console versions patched, put in some PC specific features, beta test, release an SDK and hell (I’m feeling mad crazy) released the game for $29.99 or less.

(Humate) #39

Nothing wrong with talking up features that eventually get dropped, due to circumstances. Thats how it goes.

However in order to maintain the basic respect level of buyers, they needed to let those people know whether those features were dropped prior to release. Ofcourse this isn’t going to happen. Any realist would see that its in their interest to let PC players believe that Brink is ET3 for example. Correction, its in their interest to categorically state it. Lets not mince words here.

“I’ll be honest,” said Richard Ham, creative director at Splash Damage to Joystiq during a recent press event in Los Angeles. “Brink is Enemy Territory 3. Let’s not mince words here.”
