Racial Comments. . should they be reported?

(BTB) #1

People spamming “f u you ni**er” over and over in chat (not voice), should they be banned? Maybe I’m just too sensitive. It wasn’t even directed at me, but it really gets under my skin when people do that.

(ThatRandomGuy) #2

Well , just report em if you feel that they have insulted you. The support will take care of it…

Non of us can give you a proper YES OR NO on this because the effect of their actions varies from person to person. If you feel insulted / offended, then by all means , go ahead n report em

(PurpleNurple) #3

People are gonna be dicks no matter what the rules are. The only reason a word can have enough power to hurt you is if you let it. I just respond with “k”. If they think you don’t care they’re more likely to stop. If you complain about it to them you’re just feeding the troll. I’ve only ran into two people like that, but they stopped after a couple minutes when no one paid attention to them. Like the dude above said tho if you can’t handle it just report them and hope for the best. Hopefully a /ignore feature comes soon tho.

(avidCow) #4

In-game chat trolls are the easiest people in the world to ignore. That doesn’t mean they’re not dicks.

(PlayingUndead) #5

Yes. Ignoring them is wise advice, but so is the notion to report them. Online verbal abuse is something that exists partially because we the players choose to be passive about it instead of creating an environment where it isn’t tolerated. Me personally, I really have never been genuinely offended, but that’s just part of who I am or something, I learned how to deal with it young, but it’s like we say in criminal justice, it takes a community to protect a community. Plus, I think we’d all like a less toxic community to literally play games with. Most of us are here to enjoy our time off things that actually matter, and I think it’s more fun when the people actually act like people. This is a complex issue, I’ll just copy and paste my statement from a previous post to reflect my thoughts on it, don’t feel obliged to read:

"In my experience, every multiplayer gaming community is toxic. I do agree that such poor behavior should have penalty, but it’s hard to put something like that in without huge potential for abuse, and to be honest a lot of folks can’t tell the difference between friendly “boys will be boys” joking around and legitimate repressed anger fueled verbal assault.

I’d still implement some kind of defense for it though if I could, in every single game. A lot of these folks, and kids on these games don’t actually interact with others outside of video games and that kind of verbal onslaught could really screw up their heads if they forgot how to know any better.

Anyway, as for folks like you and me, best we can do is just try to group up with people who don’t deliberately devote their free time to yelling at strangers on the internet, and ignore the rest. There is definitely a problem to be addressed, but nobody has the right answer for it yet."

TLDR: Do both! Don’t actually care AND THEN ALSO report for the sake of the community. You’re a part of it, so naturally you want a better atmosphere! Thanks for taking the time.

And this is the link where you can report at, just try to have as much information as you can before submitting a request (screenshot evidence, server name, time of incident, player info, that sort of stuff so you don’t just send them a vague ticket that says “Dave’s a jerk!” or something, hah):

(Ghosthree3) #6

I disagree, it’s something that exists because of the reactions it gets out of people. If all people remained passive to it all the time, it wouldn’t be a problem.

(PlayingUndead) #7

You’re not entirely wrong for sure, but by “not tolerated” I don’t mean “getting visibly upset”, I mean reporting it to the proper sources for penalties on the account in question. You should never get visibly upset to those trying to upset you, but maybe I just figured that for common sense, hah.

Also, some folks are always bound to add fuel to the fire, and I’ll be damned if I feel like a whole community should suffer because of a couple folks who don’t know better. You ain’t wrong though, that’s for sure, it is for the risk-free rise they can get. Same as prank calls, I guess. I’m saying risk should be added, although with discretion of course.

(Amerika) #8

Just report them. Nobody needs people like that in their community.

(ThatRandomGuy) #9

A community is like a coin…And you cant have a coin with only 1 side… Everything has 2 sides…Deal with it ,whether you want it or not !

(Amerika) #10

I don’t subscribe to that mentality. People who are toxic shouldn’t ruin the game for others who are trying to have a good time without being toxic. If you sit and do nothing then good people leave and more toxic players become involved and soon that’s what the community is known for.

I consider reporting them “dealing with it”.

(Eox) #11

Of course they should. The guy spoils the fun of almost everyone by being a giant xenophobic tool. If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for the other players.

(PlayingUndead) #12

You know, generally these folks are thinking “I can use this game to get a rise outta folks for free and still enjoy the game while having my fun by trolling them” but imagine if everyone really committed to punishing that kind of really inappropriate behavior (you know, kind of like in real life how you’d get shut down for that kind of behavior eventually, be it a bad reputation losing your shot at a job, not being allowed into a bar anymore, or just not having friends), there would be the added deterrent of “Well I’d rather not deal with a ban”.

Sure, it’d still happen, but if you made the risk of penalty feel real, you could lower the numbers, and over time maybe have a lasting effect on not only one game’s community, but more community attitudes across even more games as more players who adopt this proactive attitude spread further out. As we know, developers generally create games and policies based on player desires, to keep them in the game, and if more people demanded repercussions for toxic behavior from the games they played and actively submitted tickets to indicate that, in high enough numbers a real difference can be made. Starts with us, the players. That’s my take on it anyhow. My thanks to any and every player who submits a ticket on this kind of thing, whether or not you feel the same way I do about all my jargon on “making a difference”.

(Gwarh) #13

I feel your pain OP. I am a HARD CORE FREE SPEACH advocate, but after the 20th N1gg3r spam in chat even I loose my patience.

I’d be happy enough with an ignore feature. When they are blatantly trolling, going well out of their way to annoy and get a rise out of people why not report em (that is when the reporting system is put in).

Reap what you sow trolls, reap what you sow

(Ghosthree3) #14

I seriously don’t think too many people actually spam this - aggressively/insultingly - THAT frequently.

(Backuplight) #15

I haven’t seen this that often, though a way to mute/block someone’s chat in game wouldn’t go amiss. That said, it’s not exactly “top of the pile” with features I’m eager to see.

(Gwarh) #16

But mah fEELz

(Mr-Penguin) #17

You can mute by going to the scoreboard, hold down RMB to activate the cursor, then click on the name of the person you want to mute and press mute. You can also call kicks this way.

Considering that everyone agreed to that section in the EULA.

5.1. Rules Regarding Online Conduct. You may not do, and will be in violation of this Agreement if you do, any of the following:

–SNIP–

5.1.2. Harass, threaten, embarrass, or do anything else to another user that is unwanted.

5.1.3. Transmit or facilitate distribution of content that is harmful, abusive, racially or ethnically offensive, vulgar, sexually explicit, defamatory, infringing, invasive of personal privacy or publicity rights, or in a reasonable person’s view, objectionable. Hate speech is not tolerated.

5.1.4. Promote or encourage any illegal activity including hacking.

–SNIP–

5.1.6. Do anything that interferes with the ability of other users to enjoy playing the Game in accordance with its rules, or that materially increases the expense or difficulty of Nexon America, or the third party service provider (if applicable), in maintaining the Game for the enjoyment of all its users.

I would say that reporting is the way to go. And in the future hopefully is just a right click on a name away.

(Ghosthree3) #19

This will end in so many false reports being filed that legitimate cases will be solved too slowly.

(Gi.Am) #20

Being able to reporting ingame (hacking, harrasment, inappropiate language) is pretty much standard for online games nowadays. Ususally the chatlogs get transfered together with the other information. In the case of racial slurs its pretty simple.
Run the chat logs against a blacklist of words and phrases. Review the cases first that had matches with the blacklist. After that review the cases that didn’t have hits and see if they are false positives or if they contain words and writing styles you didn’t have on the list sofar. Update the list.
