I’ve used 0 for a very long time, ever since I realised I didn’t really need the extra memory it saved me with a high value, because I like the sharp and clean look, while the blurred effect 3 gives is just too “soft” and ugly.
However, I changed it today–the way I used to have it over a year ago–and noticed that it’s easier to focus on the crosshair when moving the mouse fast sideways, because the contrast between the textures in the background and crosshair is greater. It’s also easier to spot things like a dropped grenade on the ground–in case you didn’t hear it–and easier to make out other players on long distances. Also, the loading time between in each map is diminished quite a bit, it seems.
Another question: When switching to a high r_picmip, it kind of feels like I’m “lower” than with a low value; that is, a feeling that the vision is lower to the ground. An illusion, but I can’t understand why it looks that way. Test it out and you’ll see what I mean. Anyone know why?
Note: I read somewhere that r_picmip2 is for single-player; so because ET doesn’t have a single-player mode, it’s it’s pretty much redundant. I could be wrong.
