Since last week or so the number of servers ET finds has been dwindling severely; there used to be hundreds of them but since last week the game has been finding less and less. What leads me to believe that this is not the result of a sudden decrease in the game’s popularity is the fact that in my ‘favorites’ list there are a bunch of servers that are apparently active (they have people on them) but no ping appears and I can’t join them. Probably a fairly stupid question, but is all this simply because I haven’t installed the new 1.02 patch yet? I haven’t done so because I see and hear all kinds of bad things about it, but if it’s necessary to ‘find’ all the servers again and to keep enjoying ET (and to be able to join all my favorite server again) I’ll of course install it.

I think you are going to have to install it.
We went through the same thing each time a new RtCW patch came out. Everyone would bitch about it for a few weeks then suddenly everyone was running it with no complaints.
If you want to keep on playing on servers running the old version then make a copy of your ET folder before installing the upgrade.
