Quick question....

Does anyone know if ET will be ported to the MAC?

I am part of a well established RTCW clan and all the members are playing ET now except me. We even have an ET server @

216.218.242.240:27960

but I can’t play there because I use a Mac…
I am a graphic artist and I like my mac so plz don’t start flaming me for the platform choice I’ve heard it all before.

Anyways I am just wondering if anyone has heard any news regarding ET being ported to Mac. I would think this would be something that someone would be interested in besides myself :disgust:

Try the search function, I’ve seen quite a few posts about this (some of them very heated debates) and there is a petition going on at some site about getting it ported to MAC.

Sorry I can’t be more helpfull, I don’t remember exactly which threads had this topic going but, do a search and you’ll find them.

A MAC port is VERY unlikely because, as I’m sure you all know, everything comes down to money. Being this is a free game, there would be no money in it - and I’ll bet Activision and Splash damage aren’t too keen on dumping too much more money into a game that isn’t going to make them any money.

Personally, I don’t know why more games aren’t ported to MAC, because they are good machines (RISC processors, etc.). ALSO, one would think that developing for MACs would be easier (somewhat like developing for consoles) because there are less hardware configurations to have to worry about.

I don’t use MACs (other than at work every now and again), but I think they are a quality platform that doesn’t get enough attention from the gaming industry.

Keep your fingers crossed for a port though - you never know!!

Wouldn’t it be easiest to just take the Linux codebase for ET and recompile for OSX? Does the OSX X server interface not implement OpenGL? I know X is a recent thing for OSX but I can’t imagine it being that half-assed. Off the top of my head, I think that would be the only major hurdle for a quick route for ET on OSX. Or maybe OSX is less like a UNIX than I thought.

I have to stop talking now or I’ll start bashing Apple’s business practices that make them look worse than their “archenemy” MS… Okay, I’m starting to slip, gotta go.

Okay I just checked Apple’s X for X page.

Yes, OpenGL does work in X windows on OSX. Also, because this the most important thing for the Mac people, you still get the window drop shadow and “genie effect” for the waste of screen space, errr, dock. Bah, there I go again.

Anyway, so why not just recompile ET on OSX with their port of XFree86? Seems like a simple solution to me.

Maybe there are speed issues? Anyone wanna run glxgears on OSX to give us a rough idea of any speed problems that might be present? Yeah, it’s not the most sophisticated or thorough benchmark but I just want to get an idea of how fast it can possibly go.

Quick question - “Does anyone know if ET will be ported to the MAC?”

Quick reply - “No it isn’t”

And all this decompiling/recompiling stuff has to be breaking copyright or something or other.

Umm, what? At most, they may not have a license for Mac development from ID but I’m assuming Activision has one from RTCW.

Well I’ve said it before this whole ET for the macintosh thing is VERY FUCKING TEDIOUS. Hows about some relevant questions about ET or failing that some light hearted comments that make what can be an abnormally boring topic just that little bit merrier.
