Questions about aim/tracking

(1-800-NOTHING) #1

playing on a low spec pc (laptop) i usually just write the jumpyness/jerkyness of the crosshair off as a framerate/input lag issue. especially in heavy fights it’s very hard to tease this apart from “view kick” as a result of being hit.

so i guess i’ll just ask. silly question number one: is there view kick/stagger as a result of being hit?

the second silly question has to do with tracking while strafing. when i’m standing still and tracking a player the crosshair movement (barring framerate issues) feels pretty crisp and smooth, but whenever i start strafing while tracking the crosshair feels like it’s swimming/dragging behind and i actually get a bit seasick. never had this issue with et:qw.

silly question #2: could this be due to the strafe acceleration?

#1: There used to be severe view kick when hit, I think it’s been toned down slightly now, but is still there.

#2: Yes the strafe acceleration makes tracking whilst strafing extremely annoying, I experience this also.

ah, thx for the heads up!

well, then my humble suggestion to SD would be to remove the view kick entirely, as it doesn’t improve tracking as far as i can see.
also, i think it places an unnecessary emphasis on bodyshots/RoF - which is especially bad for single-shot weapons in CQ.
[generally i find these kinds of “double punishment” features to be nothing but annoying… and highly alienating  ]

overall, i’d love to see the movement/controls in this game as crisp and responsive as possible.

Make sure you have oneframethreadlag= false

(1-800-NOTHING) #5

aka. one frame interval = off? yeah, it’s off/false.

(INF3RN0) #6

Well then it must just be from your poor frame rate then I’m guessing. When that setting is on though it can cause significant mouse float.

(1-800-NOTHING) #7

well, if it’s only a framerate issue then you would expect it to occur when standing still and tracking, as well, wouldn’t you?

(INF3RN0) #8

All I can say is that I don’t experience what your describing at a stable framerate, so I can only assume that it’s from your low frame rate.

laptop? With nvidia optimus?

(1-800-NOTHING) #11

laptop+nvidia, yes. but no optimus, i think. requires win7 or “higher”, while i only have vista.
why?

(ailmanki) #12

Because I had to make an extra profile so that the game uses the nvidia card instead of the integrated one,
while the last time I played, I did play with the internal gfx - at stable 60fps - but it still felt kinda laggy (cause my nvidia did overheat)…

(shaftz0r) #13

no. just no. do yourself a huge favor and install win 7 asap. that hurts almost as much as reading “i have win ME installed”

nope.+chars

oh, ok. well i have made a profile for shooter game and tried to disable as much stuff as possible. can’t say i’m seeing that much of a difference, though…
not sure it’s even working.

(shaftz0r) #16

have you tried my cfg? you also need to make sure the .ini file is set to read only after you edit it

(1-800-NOTHING) #17

nah, haven’t tried any extensive ini tweaking yet. only the menu postprocessing and some net setting (which i’m not sure hasn’t been overwritten).

edit: ok, using it now. had to change the resx and resy to 1024x768 (or a lower value than your version anyways), but the framerate boost is pretty awesome. cheers!

another aspect of the whole aim/tracking issue is actually hitting stuff - aka. weapon spread.

i like the way IS works atm. (the fact that it is actually useful at all, and primarily for long range), but the spread on hipfire seems a bit high.

especially on SMGs and MPs there seems to be a sort of range-wise “blind spot” between short and medium range (or somewhere thereabouts), where enemy strafing/IS movement penalty makes it impractical to use IS but the hipfire spread is too high for hipfire to really be effective.

also, i’m a bit curious as to whether the weapon spread is balanced towards strafing=accuracy penalty or standing still=accuracy bonus? (is the spread when walking the baseline, for instance?)

(Smooth) #19

The baseline spread and recoil is defined in the Running (not Sprinting) state for the weapons.

We then apply a multiplier for each state, so technically Crouching and Stationary states are considered a bonus.

Sprinting and Jumping are the only ‘penalty’ states.

PS. Walking speed is only used when you iron-sight.

Sometimes using hip fire feels really random at mid range due to the spread. You should really consider reducing this hip fire spread, a lot of people are asking for this.
