[Question] Why don't you do maintenances at times nobody is playing?

(frostyvampire) #1

Edit: Ok I got my answer, how do I flag a comment as the answer?
I was just wondering why all the maintenances before updates happen at mid-day times (EU here) where there are a lot of people playing. I know that Nexon is an American company (not sure about SD) but still 17:00 UK time is only 12:00 in US.

My question is why not do the maintenances right when you get to the office early in the morning? I don’t know when you get to the office but assuming you get at 8:00 US time, why don’t you start the maintenance at 8:30 which is 13:30 UK time and then during the peak hours (evening time) the update is already out.
Or, if it’s possible (if you don’t need to constantly keep an eye on the PC/s) then why not do it when your working day is done and you are about to go home, just leave the computer/s open for a night and let it do all the stuff. That way in the morning the update would already be out

Nexon is based in california. There it’s 0900PDT when the maintenance starts.

Sydney (AEST, UTC+10): 2:00 AM - 5:00 AM, September 9th

Perfect timing for us down under.

(MarsRover) #4

That’s the only time when both Nexon people (responsible for servers) and SD (responsible for the game client) are both in office. Besides, for game updates nowaday’s there’s only minimal downtime.

BTW, if you prefer to skip DB today - last day of BF1 beta demo :slight_smile:

(ClemClem7) #5

They do it at the beginning of the day for them so they can control unwanted bugs, as for the MM update few months ago. Its always better than having a game which can’t be played because of an update which screwed it.

@MarsRover
So SD is a British company I assume, right?
If they are, then I guess that makes sense.

I tried BF1, I run it on 30 fps because my potato PC and I can’t see enemy players because they are so tiny and often I get killed by people outside of my render distance. BF1 is not the game for me, I just uninstalled it the day I installed it.

@grumpyBull
I know that no matter what there will always be an area where the times will be good and bad.
But since the majority of the community are American or European, it makes sense to try and make the maintenance times to be the best for them

@hypnotoad
California is in America no? (When I say America I do NOT mean US, I mean

@ClemClem7
Well 17:00 is not really the beginning of the day.
And in America it’s 12:00 which isn’t the beginning either

(nokiII) #7

Are you some kind of stupid? Because based on your posts, it sure seems so.

Yep. Nexon - US west coast, SD - UK.

Minimal downtime updates are fine in this timeslot, but we also had 4h+ updates during EU prime time, which is a bit dumbfounding.

Shame, because audio-visually the game is absolutely stunning. Jaw dropping.

its probably not “press the button and let it do things”
world wont end if you wont losse another 3 rankeds

(frostyvampire) #10

@MarsRover
Ok thanks for letting me know.
I don’t mind if the maintenance ends after 30 minutes, but 3-4 hour ones should be at the time most players are not playing

@BananaSlug
This is why I said “if it’s possible” on the night times. But I don’t really know why they don’t do it early in the morning when they just get to the office. When most people are at school or still sleeping.
The world won’t end, I just play other games but it’s still annoying. And some people don’t have other good games, most of them cost money. I personally can play csgo or Overwatch or Rocket League and many other games, but some people can’t do it.

(BlackboltLW) #11

The maintenance time is pretty good on Asia/Australia region though, around 0100-0400 in the morning

which is… from some of my experience, people also still playing for whatever reason when I already dead in my bed :confused:

(frostyvampire) #12

@BlackboltLW
Yeah but the majority of people are from Europe or America. So it makes more sense to time it for them

(Dagasawr) #13

to be honest I dont mind taking a break for a few hours

(Herr_Hanz) #14

technically for me the late time is good, because its out so i can download it when i go to sleep. (have to wait 4 hours between the update and sleeping tho)

(frostyvampire) #15

@Herr_Hanz
I think you should get a better internet then : 3
The update shouldn’t take more than 10 mins

welcome to my 26 ping, 2.5mbps down, 0.5mbps up internet speed, updates will usually take 2 hours.

Even more so what on Earth is then your reasoning behind complaining about the update times when a small-ish patch like this comes up?

Not only we have this “sleep” thing going, we live on a globe illuminated by one star only, its always “bad time” for someone on here. Yes sure majority of the playerbase resides on areas X and Y but when you think about it more, so are the developers and publishers who are in charge of the whole ordeal, getting the patch launched and fix any issues that might arise. Technical difficulties, last minute errors, large amount of stuff invisible for end-user, player, has to be somewhat prepared for with work force around able to deal with these if they emerge.

Or are you seriously thinking either Nexon or SD employees should work on nightshift or outside their normal regime (some already do on stream days remember?) just so that your precious day time is not “wasted”?

(frostyvampire) #18

@Herr_Hanz
Wait what. How do you get 26 ping with 2.5 MB/s .-. Is the server being hosted in your house?

@bontsa
I’m not complaining, it’s a question.
And what I’m talking about is the maintenance time, NOT the download time.
I also said that it can happen in the morning when they just get to the office.

Please read my post

23 ping to the speedtest.net server, and around 36 ping on any EU server. good thing bad down/up speed doesnt mean bad ping. i have bad down/up because i live on a farm.

@FrostyVampire the US has 4 time zones, California where Nexon is located has a 8 hours difference with the UK, so indeed the only time they can synchronized activities with SD is late afternoon in the UK…
