Question: How to deal with the useless

(Realirony) #1

Under the advisement of another I have created a new thread to see if I could find some answers to a question I have that arose in another thread.

I don’t believe it has been asked before or answered:
What repercussions, if any at all, are there for players who are not contributing to the game in any fashion in a MP setting. Examples would be, players idling in a corner, players shooting/grieving their own team in the manner of team-kills or screwing up objective attempts, etc.

I have done some looking around and I don’t believe there has been any mention of a kick feature or anything of the like. But I would assume that with a game based majorly on objective taking/defending that someone on a team of 8 that is hampering the progression of the team should/would be punished in some sort.

Any ideas?

server admins will kick/ban them

Idling on purpose is a form of grieving and for grievers you need a votekick, or an admin one with better default settings than ETQW started with so that you can actually get people kicked on a majority vote.

I believe idling has been answered, there will be a timeout period where it looks for input from the player… if nothing is done within the period, the player will be kicked and replaced with a bot (Server dependent).

By default FF is off, so bleeding and TK’ing won’t be an issue on those servers, I’m thinking the infraction method used in ETQW may be implemented in FF on servers. If a team mate kills you, you can choose to file a report or forgive them… too many reports and the player is kicked from the server.

For the rest of the general asshattery, there may be the good ole /callvote kick player, or getting the server admin to boot them.

Without sounding too much like a “console-child,” how would the system/game deal with these same problems on the PS3 and 360? I understand that this forum caters to mainly PC gamers (and I would def get this game for PC if my hardware wasn’t so outdated). But just wanted to cover all my bases and see what your thoughts/ideas are for the console side of the question.

If I had to imagine, those that play this on console will just have to deal with having the problem players or leave the match seeing that votes and “/” commands would be impossible with a controller. Unless anyone thinks differently. The only thing in my own experience that has come close to any sort of punishment has been BFBC2 where one would be removed from the match after 5-6 TKs were made by the player (this on the PS3 version of the title).

friendly fire is off by default on consoles, so no tk’s

On console I would hope/guess there will still be a vote to kick option, it can still be done even though you don’t have “/ command” options it just has to be recreated in a menu. There was one in the L4D games and it worked fine to weed out the idiots. Hopefully SD took a note from their time playing that game and put something similar in Brink.

In L4D you just brought up the pause menu, picked call a vote, picked remove player, picked the player to call the vote on and a press A for yes/press B for no option popped up for everyone. It took about 5 seconds to do once you knew where it was. If the majority of the team voted yes the player was removed from the game. There were also vote call options for return to lobby and restart match in L4D/2 on consoles, iirc. Hopefully SD put options like that in Brink, having one person screw up a game on purpose sucks. It was more glaring in L4D with the smaller team and FF on all the time.

I see. I havent played L4D online ever only split-screen so that would explain why I never noticed that feature. Pretty cool idea if it is implemented into Brink. Only concern I could see coming out of it is with the clutter of another window/HUD popping up asking you to take notice of it long enough to read the player ID that is being kicked and asking you if you want to kick said person.

As a possibility of back-fire I could see trolls using people’s “quick-to-close-pop-ups” reactions to kick people just for the hell of it (people hitting “A” just to get the pop-up to go away). In an intense, in your face, firefight I would assume that not many people will take notice of what name is in the pop-up.

Either way though, I’m sure that people not helping their team will be few and far between in a game that is meant specifically to be objective based and the most EXP one gets is from objectives.

It isn’t like you saw pop ups all the time. They only got used occasionally in that game and by the time they did everyone knew who/what the popup was for in most cases because it isn’t hard to pick out someone running off on their own or shooting at you with the 4 person party size.

Sometimes the vote would get called and fail because not enough people realized someone was griefing yet. Then after that quick popup they would pay attention and the next vote they would be ready to vote to boot them. The box popped up right in the middle of the screen it it was just what is below, it was kind of hard to misread or not see properly.

Around 4:08 of this video (not my video) you can see a boot vote in L4D2. As you can see in the video, it isn’t a perfect system though as people could just come back.

I don’t think it will be a huge issue with 8 man teams and FF off, not nearly as much as it was in L4D2 at least. I just hope a similar mechanic is available.

(Realirony) #10

watched the vid. you are right, doesn’t seem imposing to the player’s vision at all. For some reason I was under the impression that it was like one of those advertisement pop-ups that intentionally wants your full attention on it, haha. Anyway, I haven’t heard whether or not a feature as such is available in Brink which is why I had asked. But like you said, I’m sure that the absence of FF by default and other settings will make grief scarce. I can see that turning FF on as part of a player’s own preference is kind of asking to be shot to your team-mates intentional or otherwise.

Good to know

I’ve played L4D and L4D2 and i totally agree with maawdawg.

It wasnt the perfect system and it can be annoying with the fact you have to bring up the pause menu if you want to start the vote but still it worked well and hopefully brink will take these types of systems into account and include them online

(ultraddtd) #12

Really? I thought it was always on, to prevent the TF2 method of routing out people in disguise. It will be an option then?

It was really annoying in the L4D games because an idle or uncooperative player could literally halt the game, unless everyone else was on the same page and just left them for dead

i know they really, really bugged me!

While we’re at it:
THE VOTE KICK THING NEEDS A TEXT FIELD SO YOU CAN ENTER A REASON!!!
No use to start votekick, then 10 people asking “Why?” and the vote fails.
At least on PC… pleeze!

And a proper voting quota + only yes and no voters are counted, but not the non-voters.
The vote system in ETQW just didn’t work in regular games, nearly any vote failed.

Am I to late in making suggestions?

never too late to make suggestions, maybe too late to have them implemented though

you could just type out why and THEN start the vote, if that’s a problem for you.

They mentioned in one of the previews, that they ended up leaving that out.

Q) How do I deal with useless team-mates?

A) Have you played multiplayer games previously? If so, in the same way you always have before. By smashing your controller/keyboard and shouting.
