Question: FOV on PC

(scifikr) #1

I’ve come across some interviews with Splash Damage staff where they state it will be difficult to tell one version from the others by simply looking at some gameplay, and I’m worried this means equal Field Of View across platforms. This is an issue since console games usually have narrower field of view, kind of tunnel vision, because it fits better “couch gaming”. But this produces an annoying effect on the PC, given that you are closer to the screen, and the view seems lacking in peripheral vision (again, tunnel vision).
So the question is, will FOV be adapted to each version of the game, or at least be customizable on the PC?

I’ve discovered this problem playing Bad Company 2 on PC, which gives me headache after a while.

Thanks in advance.

I heard in bc2 u could change ur fov.

(scifikr) #3

They’ve patched it in, but in an odd way. Gives you wider fov but leaves the same weapon model view, and suffers from noticeable image deformation when set to an high value. Anyway I was talking about when the game first came out, you were forced to use console FOV.

(coolstory) #4

Ah its kind of like the way l4d2 viewmodels are…although valve listened to the PC community and gave them the the option to change the viewmodels.

SD seems to talk to the community a lot, I’ve no doubt that they’ll listen to the pc community regarding fov or w.e.

I’m sure a console setting will easily change it. I’m pretty sure (90%) I read one of the SD guys confirm that somewhere…

I’ve a suggestion, SD: How about “Surround View” for the PC version. The game camera could have, say, six camera angles and the player can pick and choose how to set up upto six monitors from those cameras. For example, if you have three monitors, you might choose Front, Left Side, and Right Side or Front, Back, and Top, etc.

Lets really use that CPU and Vid Card and show the consoles what a PC can do! And while you’re at it, how about a 3D mode toggle?

(LyndonL) #7

LoL… I hope you have XFire/SLI and an i7 cpu

The default fov may be the same on all versions but I expect it to be customizable on the PC.

PS: The default fov in BC2 is utterly horrible. My reaction while playing the beta.

Really? I’ve never actually really noticed between each game. I must just adapt easily.

My girlfriend on the other hand. She can play Borderlands, Killing Floor and L4D1/2 fine no worries, but as soon as she plays Half Life 2 etc with the lower FOV, she gets motion sick and if she continues she ends up having to lie down on the floor.

Same motion sickness happened to me and another mate. The only game where it happened so far is HL2. Strange, really.

(AnthonyDa) #11

LOL, I though that you hated STEAM (despite you admitted that you never tried it), how did you play HL² then ?

(Apples) #12

Shhh it was a friend of him, he gave him his account, this friend was me, we are secretly steam lovers who love to troll for the sake of it

(Ashog) #13

Are you too dumb too read? I said I hate steam exactly because i tried HL2 with it. I told you I have never tried battlenet, not Steam. Use yr brain plz

(AnthonyDa) #14

Roflol. That’s not what you told us on IRC, you said that you never tried both and thinking that STEAM sux unlike battle.net even if you never tried them :stroggbanana: And everybody understood the same thing.

Enjoy with battle.net :stroggtapir:

Check logs then. And learn to read.

You’re not serious are you? =D

I hope LyndonL is right.
Running around like a horse with blinders is horrible!

Sorry to necro this thread but I’d like an answer to this question and it hasn’t been answered yet.

Will we able to change FOV on the PC?

And another question, will we be able to use the command draw_gun 1 or 0? I always hide my gunmodels in games when it’s possible since I don’t like it when it blocks half my screen.

(coolstory) #19

^Same…playing without gun model makes the game so much more fun for me.

(system) #20

The gun model is drawn at a fixed fov regardless of what you set for the viewport.
And you should do your homework, fov could be changed in BFBC2 from the beginning in the settings.ini file, even in beta. Also, this comment ‘and suffers from noticeable image deformation when set to an high value’ do you have any clue of how this whole view matrix works and why it deforms or better yet exaggerates perspective just like a wide angle lens in real life does the same thing?
