Question about Multiplayer

(zXSwordXz) #1

Hi Guys, Sorry advance if I come off sounding stupid or if this has been already been discuss. I’m reading lot of EE 09 reports and they all seems to be point towards massive co-op gameplay. However, what about player vs player mode? Please share what you know about the player vs player MP modes. Like what type of mode, max players per team and etc…

Thanks Everyone,
zXSwordXz

It’s always been said it’s 8v8 ET style gameplay, there’s never really been mention of massive coop.

(Brandmon) #3

But if there would not be any strict restrictions on server limits, I wouldn’t be surprised of possible 64 player servers. That would be massive multiplayer.
For coop? Probably would be limited to around 8 or 12. About that range.

(DarkangelUK) #4

Multiplayer is coop is singleplayer is vs… it’s all the same, 8v8 by default. Maybe custom servers can be made to edit that stuff, but out of the box its all 8v8.

(Mustang) #5

Yep, what Darkangel said

SD have said it will always be 8v8 no matter how many “real” players there are

(zXSwordXz) #6

Thanks guys…I use poor choice of word “massive”. What I was trying to say is that they seem to be more emphasis on the coop multiplayer more than the player vs player.

(Nail) #7

co-op is the big buzz word for consoles these days, capitalizing on that aspect for consoles is a good thing imo

(Floris) #8

As BRINK will have dedicated servers (hurray), will admins be able to host games above the 8vs8 setting? It would be great for mappers and modders if they could design their work around a larger amount of players active at the same time.

Does this game have a team deathmatch style multiplayer like Call of Duty or something or is this more like the versus mode on Left 4 Dead?

(tokamak) #10

More like the versus mode in left 4 dead where one team attempts to stop the other team from completing their goal yes.

(Rahdo) #11

I don’t see why not…

(jRAD) #12

There are practical constraints on the number of players that can be supported. I’m sure we’ll release more info later on.

(tokamak) #13

You mean a dedicated server can host several games at once?

(Rahdo) #14

I’ll hasten to point out, I’m a caveman, so just because I personally can’t see a reason to limit the number of players for a “cheat” of sorts, doesn’t mean that there aren’t specific technical reasons that such things might not be possible, as Jrad points out

(RoryGreen) #15

Good, a change in Multiplayer gaming for once. It has been too long without a change in multiplayer. Thanks for letting me know! :stroggtapir:

(Nail) #16

That change came about with RTCW and continued with W:ET 6 years ago.

(tokamak) #17

It goes even further back with Team Fortress and SD’s first Quake Mod.

But yes Rory, if you’re interested, there’s nothing stopping you from downloading Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (it’s completely free) and see what made Splash Damage one of the biggies.

My previous post was a bit misleading. I meant like a major shift in gameplay for consoles. I’m not really too much of a PC gamer so I don’t know much about this. At the moment, the gameplay variety for consoles is Call of Duty or Call of Duty. Everybody has just copied them!

I might take a look at some of those games. Thanks for pointing them out.

edit Nice, I didn’t know that W:ET was on a mac! That has made my day. I no longer have to play on my crappy PC! I can play on my mac! YAY!. Thanks guys! edit

Developers are cookie cutting these games because the majority of the customer base are ignorant or dismissive to the benefits available. MW2 is again a good example of how even the PC version is getting it’s feature list buried.

ETQW was buried IMO because Activision failed to educate via marketing what the game really offered. People instead picked it up thinking Battlefield, W:ET or some other inaccurate generalisation and then totally missed what SD were aiming for.

If you want some originality I’d suggest in the most humble way possible that you game a bit more on the PC/Mac. Load up some older games and see what you’re missing then tell your friends that it’s not all CoD.

I have started playing some Valve games on steam on my mac (via CrossOver) and I have been really impressed. I bought Team Fortress 2 and it is great. Why have I never heard of these games before? This really shows how split the gaming community is, with console gamers like myself never even hearing of PC games like these.
