Marketing is the lowest, sleaziest, slimiest, most invasive profession in the world. If they could beam commercials directly into your skull while you sleep, they would do it. While i’m disappointed that ETQW will have ingame ads, they are at the mercy of Activision’s stockholders, ultimately, and they have these funny ideas about making as much money as possible from each game. Nothing wrong with making money, so long as it’s not obnoxious.
ETQW will hardly be the first game with ads, and if they are done tastefully in a way that doesn’t break immersion, I will tolerate them. If there is a big freaking McDonalds ad that flashes everytime your cursor crosses it, or a “McDonalds Player of the Game” for each round, well, that’s another thing entirely. I’m still opposed to in-game ads in principle, and I’d pay $5-10 more for an ad free version, but beggars can’t be choosers. Ultimately, you have to look at the whole package of a game and decide whether it’s worth your money, ads or no ads. On a positive note, ads have been in sports games for years quite unnoticeably because they don’t break the immersion (nothing unusual about seeing an ad in a sports arena).
Another thing that is a deal-breaker for me is if the game were to track my age, gaming habits, etc, in order to more aggressively market to me by reporting my habits to unknown third parties. I haven’t heard whether this is the case or not, but I am entirely against this sort of spying. I play games to get away from reality, not to aid marketers in further spamming me with ads and junk that I don’t want or need.
