http://www.fpsadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?p=51697

scroll down and I see this!

“ET:QW incorporates technology of Massive Incorporated (“Massive”) that enables certain in-game objects (e.g. advertising) to be temporarily uploaded to your personal computer or game console and placed in-game while connected online. As part of that process, no personally identifiable information about you is collected and only select non-personally identifiable information is temporarily logged. No logged information is used to determine any personally identifiable information about you. For additional details see Massive’s privacy policy at http://www.massiveincorporated.com/privacy.htm

Please tell us you didnt sell out!

it’s not up to Splash damage what other things id and Activision add, it’s id’s game after all

(Tahnit) #3

i think this will totally ruin the immersion though.

(corvey) #4

Actually, this could be useful. You could advertise, say for instance PORNO, and have porn shown everywhere on your server…

Who says advertising can’t be fun? HAHA

(zivs) #5

if the advertisements would be in appropriate places (where they are in real life), then I think it would only improve gaming experience. Ofcourse, only my toughts, but it would make gaming experience every day much more different. And besides - who of us actually pay attention to advertisement wallpapers nowdays?

(Sauron|EFG) #6

They would have to be in places where it’s logical to have ads during war time in 2060…

(fraSer) #7

It depends how they do it.
Ive a wee bit of experience of badly implemented in game advertising.
ToCA 3, a game i used to play alot, has ingame streamed advertising.
On the whole not a bad idea, to see the advertisment boards updated with different circuit specific adverts that relate to the game.
ie Adverts for companies related to the motor racing sport.
.
Unfortunatly, ToCA went down the road of having virtually every in game advert holder advertising the exact same thing, round almost the whole length of the track. So at times you were driving round a track that was plastered with adverts for “Pirates of the Caribian”, and the other one i remember, was a track full of adverts for “McDonalds”. Not played it recently, so hopefully they will have toned down the advert overkill abit.
.
So hopefully the nature of ET:QW will mean that SD cant get away with walls plastered with the same advert. Instead hopefully they will be placed in the game with some thought for realisim.

Might not even be ads that is just an example

I will be really pissed off if there are ads in this game though

(kamikazee) #9

If there are ads in-game and it is somehow possible to mod them out of sight, I have just found a new reason to go for an unranked server!

(murka) #10

like anyone wants to go to a ranked server… just like 64 slot and 24 slot servers, 24 ofc.

(madness) #11

Excellent news !

not really, not sure what to think of it…

And people said you can’t compare id/SD to EA

Marketing is the lowest, sleaziest, slimiest, most invasive profession in the world. If they could beam commercials directly into your skull while you sleep, they would do it. While i’m disappointed that ETQW will have ingame ads, they are at the mercy of Activision’s stockholders, ultimately, and they have these funny ideas about making as much money as possible from each game. Nothing wrong with making money, so long as it’s not obnoxious.

ETQW will hardly be the first game with ads, and if they are done tastefully in a way that doesn’t break immersion, I will tolerate them. If there is a big freaking McDonalds ad that flashes everytime your cursor crosses it, or a “McDonalds Player of the Game” for each round, well, that’s another thing entirely. I’m still opposed to in-game ads in principle, and I’d pay $5-10 more for an ad free version, but beggars can’t be choosers. Ultimately, you have to look at the whole package of a game and decide whether it’s worth your money, ads or no ads. On a positive note, ads have been in sports games for years quite unnoticeably because they don’t break the immersion (nothing unusual about seeing an ad in a sports arena).

Another thing that is a deal-breaker for me is if the game were to track my age, gaming habits, etc, in order to more aggressively market to me by reporting my habits to unknown third parties. I haven’t heard whether this is the case or not, but I am entirely against this sort of spying. I play games to get away from reality, not to aid marketers in further spamming me with ads and junk that I don’t want or need.

(BondyBoy007) #13

well I certainly wouldn’t play on such a server, god doesn’t like it when I look at naked ladies

(BondyBoy007) #14

I take it you’ve seen the episode of Futurama where they do exactly that?

(kamikazee) #15

The only thing that it tracks for sure is your IP. (Don’t know if it does more than that.) So by tracking down your ISP they can make a guess at which part of the world you live in.

(mortis) #16

I take it you’ve seen the episode of Futurama where they do exactly that?[/quote]

No, but it’s just the kind of thing they’d love…bastards!

I don’t watch Futurama often, so I didn’t see the episode…but it sounds like a topic they’d tackle…

This is really disappointing. I was looking forward to this game, it looks absolutely incredible. However, in-game advertisements have no place in a first person shooter. As a previous poster suggested, it’s fine to have advertisements in a sports game because it’s to be expected and actually adds to the sense of realism. To be honest though, and maybe it’s just me being wierd and having a really strong disliking to this stuff, but I didn’t buy BF2142 because of advertisements. If this is true, then I’m afraid I won’t be buying quake wars :frowning:

Someone suggested paying extra for a version without advertising. I think thats a great idea. It could quite easily implemented in the game via accounts so you can pay to have in-game advertisements disabled on your account. I would happily pay £10 more if it meant an advert-free game. At least offer us the option though. Quake wars is a great game and all, but for me, adverts ruin it, and I will quite happily spend my money on another game.

(ayatollah) #18

Yeah because in the future urban warfare will only be fought in places with no billboards or advertising what-so-ever…

I think it will be done tactfully and in places that you would expect to see adverts, ie billboards along roads. Not that I am a fan of ads being in the game, but it will not break immersion as SD will be sorting that out.

(madness) #19

One can only hope.

But I don’t like how things are going in the “EA” direction…

Ranked servers, in-game ads… :o

(kamikazee) #20

I do think SD will place the billboards in good places and not just invent advertising space, however, you never know who is pushing the buttons of the advertising stream.

It’s there I get scared, because marketing guys -do- push it hard if they see it fit.
