Is there going to be any sort of BRINK competition at QCON 2011? I’m getting a little worried since it starts August 4th.
Quakecon 2011
This would be an excellent chance for SD to breath some life back into Brink. Not only would plenty of teams pick the game up again and start playing like crazy but an exciting tournament would really make the game look good!
The BrinkTV crew will be at Quakecon for sure. And that means thousands of potential online viewers who would see the game. Not to mention everyone actually at the event. This would be a huge win for Splash Damage on every level.
I’m still confused on why the Qcon 2010 forum seems to only be active through a direct link. I’m a little worried that it’s a sign that QCON won’t be the EVENT that it normally is.
<paranoia off>

Yea, I agree. I sure hope they do something with the forums soon. Right now there is no way for BYOC tournaments to be organized. If there is no official tournament for Brink, at least a well organized BYOC tourney could be fun. But without Quakecon forums, there is little to no hope a tournament can be organized for the BYOC.
I was also kinda looking forward to some BYOC ETQW. I wonder if TAW plans to host another BYOC ETQW tourney? ETQW is actually pretty amazing on LAN. 0 ping and your shots actually reg! Good reg does wonders for that game!
Anyhow, figures are crossed it will still be QUAKEcon and not BETHcon.
brink is pub only how can u make competitions without a referee command, stop, start, pause, etc?
U cant even make a demo record…
Weapons are deadly unbalanced.
Spread is ridicolous
the game is full of bugs
Of which competition are we talkin about?

he’s using the term competition loosely in that two teams compete… in whatever. even if we grabbed toboggans and raced down a hill that’d be silly but fun and a form of competition.
Any live face-to-face comp is fun and Qcon has refs. Although, the refs are volunteers and aren’t perfect.
In 2008 when we played SS in the ETQW comp, they couldn’t get the splash damage comp mod to work, so we played unrestricted 6v6. SirDark showed his awesome skills in person and we lost a tie by coin flip (total BS).
Beat a PUG.
Beat TAW.
…and then lost to BMXer’s crew, but it was a fun loss.
Playing a few rounds in a LAN environment with everyone on the same rig is fun. Even if the game isn’t flawless. Although the recent crouch bug would be pretty frustrating.
I saw that TAW had a large number of reserved slots at the BYOC. It probably wouldn’t take much to get them to host something, especially if Geppy is going to be there.
I’ll probably end up showing up this year if anyone needs a ringer for any Brink or QW tournies or pick up games.
Just had word that Brink Open Championships will be featured at QuakeCon next month: http://twitter.com/#!/QuakeCon/status/86839920156606464
That is the $64,000 question atm!
At the very least, SD needs to make Brink playable on LAN w/out an internet connection. As far as I know, the game client and the dedi server need an active internet connection to work. Thats not gonna fly on LAN in an official tournament I don’t think.
Plus, no 1st person spectating is going to suck for the viewers. Watching free fly and 3rd person is pretty horrible IMO.
No demos when money is on the line seems risky as well.
I am mostly curious what rules they are going to go with…
good news that brink will open quakecon
maybe someone out there will tell them about the bugs of the game
Apart from not having first person spec mode, free fly spectator mode is also buggy imo.
You cannot move down with the camera by pressing “crouch” or move up with “jump”.
It’s really anoying to navigate.

I can only imagine it will be played vanilla, unless by some miracle Splash Damage has been working on an official competition mod behind closed doors in preparation for this event. I have my suspicions the tournament is going to be impromptu, held on a first-come, first-served basis for any random 8v8 pick-up team to compete for a $2,500 prize pot.
I really hope I’m way off, but Splash Damage honestly hasn’t given us any real indication they intend for this game to become a spectator e-sport.
