Quake Wars - Anticheat & config tweaking?

(Sauron|EFG) #21

In the early days of ET there were constantly people crying “cheater” as soon as they were killed by some above average player, but when the most blatantly obvious aimbots raged the pubs a few months back you’d always get some people saying “no he’s just a good player” instead, and most kick votes failed in my experience.

Kick votes are even more useless if the cheat isn’t so obvious.

(Sauron|EFG) #22

Besides, most MD5 checks only check a small part of the file afaik (the Evenbalance examples only reads 2kB from each file).

(General.Jung) #23

Hello Sauron,

but you can add the checksum manually, than punkbuster works pretty good. I know that the most admins do not use these feature, but that is no reason to demote Punkbuster.

(SCDS_reyalP) #24

It still only checks at most 2k of the file. It also checks the size of the file. Even assuming PB or the APIs it uses aren’t compromised, there is plenty you can do without hitting either of those. Given a multi-megabyte executable file, chances are good the part you want to change isn’t in the 2k that get checked.

ET admins use MD5 checks a lot, but mostly with NOTFOUND rules, simply to check whether a filename associated with a cheat exists. This only works because many cheaters are extremely stupid.

(General.Jung) #25

Hello Forum,

it is possible that punkbuster not check the whole files in normal mode, but if you are adding the md5sum it checks the whole file, which you added like

pb_sv_md5tool a 1.32 v baseq3/pak0.pk3 SZ479493658 AT0 LEN2048 7F0A1D6E2BB8E138B61E08B716CE2758

, because thats the way md5sum works. I think you all do not know how md5checksum works, but thats no wonder if you are only using windows or “out of the way linux”.

(Sauron|EFG) #26

Hello General.Jung.

You even have LEN2048 in your example.

Maybe you should read the md5tool documentation, it says:
“PunkBuster limits the offset to 16 byte boundaries and the length of data checked to between 16 and 2048 bytes per check.”

It’s quite obvious that someone in this thread doesn’t know how it works.

(General.Jung) #27

Hello Sauron,

sorry i just copied it from the punkbuster website. I seen that punkbuster use a own md5tool which is based on the MD5 Checksums which prints the checksum based on the offset and length and not the real md5sum, which known from the console. So you all were right, they do not use the full checksum, sadly. This really destroy the chance of using md5sum, to really prevent cheating. If they use a checksum of the full file, it will be nearly secure. Now you know why i am so convinced.
I tested it and shows my the same checksum, sometimes also if i modified the file (5M JPG).
But i knowed how md5sum works, i only did not know that punkbuster use an extra tool. I could not believe that the world so stupid, i know the do to improve performance. But to create a checksum of a whole file which is already loaded does not really decrase performance.

Hello General Jung:

This is one of the reasons I listen to reyalP

(General.Jung) #29

Hello Forum,

but thats do not promote VAC, it is an Anti-Cheat-Tool which is based in the engine this is a good base, but Valve do not really updating it often (I mean VAC), so the utility is really poor.

(Joe999) #30

can you please stop that? it might be appropriate in emails, but on a forum it is getting pretty much annoying. thanks.

ps: if you refuse to stop that, at least make it correct and end each thread with your regards and your signature.

(signofzeta) #31

C’mon, it is his slogan. I’ve seen some people violating that. Only General Jung is allowed to use that.

It is just like Nike’s “Just do it”

(Joe999) #32

there’s a signature function for that kind of thing

(signofzeta) #33

there’s a signature function for that kind of thing [/quote]

Well you can’t really put a signature at the beginning of the post can you?

And ending a post with “hello forum” kinda sounds lame IMO.

Speaking of which, I’m going to do that.

(signofzeta) #34

This post would prove how a slogan that should be at the top, looks ridiculous at the bottom.

Hello Forum, is a sig that should be at the beginning of the post.

This is one at the bottom of the post. I guess General Jung couldn’t help it can he?

(Basic) #35

I think both PB and VAC are crap. but then there are some corking players out there. and you are sure they are cheating. some are some are’nt. cheating sucks I tend to stay on my clans server so I have admin rights and can checkup/kick suspect players.

also as much as I hate cheaters I dont think banning cd keys is the right answer. I’d like to see tempory computer bans that double in time. 1 day, 2 days, 4 days, 8 day, 16 day 32 days, goes up quite fast. and players that are caught then labeled.

(BondyBoy007) #36

If the proof is conclusive I don’t see the problem with banning the CD Key straight away

(General.Jung) #37

Hello Forum,

i ends my post with a signature. I can not believe why you discuss about how i start my post. I not guilty why most of you guys have no tact. Just i thought that i was wrong. But now you start this bauble discussion again.

(Sauron|EFG) #38

I have to agree with General.Jung on that one. His “hello forum” may seem annoying but isn’t really that hard to ignore. Having to read all complaints about it is more annoying tbh.

(Simbot) #39

PB and Vac2 are both a joke, it only catches the stupid cheaters and does nothing to catch private cheats.
Neither one of them log speed pad cfg and doesn’t give server admins the option to log them or to detect them.

PB becoming a resource hog, it starts up when you start windows, at least with Vac it doesn’t start up with windows or stay running when you exit the game.

PunksBusted site is a joke, its just a site for admins to flex their e-penis and act like they have some power over others.

(B0rsuk) #40

Good enough for me. Private cheats won’t be widespread, by definition. And single assholes can be dealt with (manual kick, admin etc).

PB becoming a resource hog, it starts up when you start windows, at least with Vac it doesn’t start up with windows or stay running when you exit the game.

Never had this problem because I don’t use windows. I can kill processes, by the way.
