Q3 engine is king

(ConchMan) #1

Did anyone think the Quake 3 engine would last so long?

(BondyBoy007) #2

yes

(pgh) #3

Of course.

(The_Jesus_Zeppelin) #4

yeah, but look how much has happened with the q3 engine,

same for the unreal warfare engine.

now try to imagine how long the HL2 engine is gonna last…once its finally out.

I think the competition is bigger now, when the Q3 engine was made there was not really anything alike (IMO). Now the engine of far cry is develloped, Doom III , HL 2, and probably a lot of other big engine’s i dont know anything about. For its time, the Q3 engine was the überengine

(puubert) #6

I think the DooM3 engine will be the benchmark. But I don’t think the new engines are going to last any longer than the older ones. I’m surpised a little that Q3 has lasted so long in it’s initial form. CoD started to edit it to do different things, but it took a long time for a totally new advanced engine to come about.

I see no reason to have confidence in their engine. HL1 was based off the quake2 engine. I see no reason to have any faith in their engine making capabilities. If its wonderful, then it will be wonderful, but as of now its just fanboys getting excited.

but as of now its just fanboys getting excited.

WEEEEEEEEEEEE…ok im done.

just looki how long the half life engine lasted, cs is still played worldwide. as is team fortress. i think the hl2 engine will last as long if not longer,

there are already games coming out that use the hl2 engine. as well as mods for hl2.

HL1 was based off the quake2 engine

barley, they used the skin and bones of it as a templete. but that happens in almost every game. not alot of games come out with their own brand new engine, its always based off of somthign else.

(SCDS_reyalP) #9

Actually, it was based on quake 1. :moo:

(Sick Boy) #10

Well said.

I’m really getting tired of all this fanboy shit.
Like there were already clans for CoD before the SP demo even was out, the neverending stream of halflife news on game sites based on close to nothing, the duke nukem guys saying for 10 years now DN4E is gonna pwn :banghead:

Let’s just wait for at least a playable demo of doom3/HL2 before we get our dicks hard plz :twak:

Hl engine was based of q1 (didn’t they actually go and buy the total rights to it or some thing like that, hence DMC in base hl updates?) but it *did have a few elements of the q2 engine if my memory serves me right.

also, I hate to sound mean but as far as CS goes…

yes it is a fun game and yes it did help to bring a whole new sub section into the fps world (tactical “realism” shooters), but the reason it is so immensely popular after all this time comes down to (IMO) the fact that it is a fun/free game that can be (most important point here) run on a total p.o.s computer and as we all know, the majority of gamers around the globe seem to run lower-end/outdated hardware until they absolutely must upgrade (usually due to some component that dies).

Oh sure, if CS is ported over to HL2 (I assume it will be) it’s going to be popular, but I have no doubt that CS1 will always eclipse it in numbers if for no other reason than the majority of people simply can’t/won’t fork over the cash to upgrade that 600mhz/32 meg card they have been running for the last several years.

al this talk about game engine’s has anyone seen what thay are doing with the quake 1 engine? http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/
thay have added alot of the nice stuff that you’ll find in doom3. Also thay are working on tenebrae 2.0 wich is based on the old code and runs q3 maps.

(dJ6i8bY) #13

i just hope that ET gets remade for the doom3 engine or a tenebrae 2.0 version is released :P. Nothing would rule more that playing ET with all the nice new grafix card tricks

(pgh) #14

Why remake ET with the Doom 3 Engine if there doing the Multiplayer for Doom 3 as it is? :stuck_out_tongue:

Not confirmed as far as I know though…

(dJ6i8bY) #15

because doom3 wont have the class system, objectives and ww2 based theam… allthough i bet it will still rox

(puubert) #16

DooM3 multiplayer will be virtually the same as the original DooM mulitplayer. 4 or 8 people fragging it out. John Carmack is more interested in the SP experience, rather than MP.
