Q3 Arena a good Trainer for ET?

(schmeisser) #1

I used to play Q3 Arena single player against the Bots, got pretty good, then bored, since the only objective is complete slaughter. I wonder if I could improve my aiming skills by playing it again? I realize that human players are infinitely more unpredictable and difficult to hit, but I’m just looking for a way to improve eye/hand coordination so I can survive 1 on 1 firefights a little more often. Any suggestions?

If you want to improve in ET, why not play ET?

Vanilla q3 seems like a poor choce, because the weapons are very different.

Q3 mods like urban terror or true combat might be better, though they have their own differences.

My DSL access is limited for the time being, so I can only play a few hours a week, which makes learning slow. I reinstalled Q3 a few minutes ago, and you are right, it feels completely different. It’s a hell of a lot faster, for one thing. Head vs. body shots don’t seem to make much difference. Killing AI bots gets boring real fast. The bots in SP RTCW are so inept I can’t bring myself to play it anymore. I suppose eventually the AI will get so good you won’t be able to tell the difference between AI and bots. Guess I’ll keep limping along in ET till DSL comes to my area.

There were also some people who developed MP bots for RTCW, search for wolfbot.

If you want to try urban terror, http://www.urbanterror.net/
it does support bots, and has much more wolf like gameplay than q3. Not sure of the quality of the bots, I only played them when I was setting up my config.

here’s a shooting practice session I do on SP RtCW.

Go to the Chateau level, I think it’s stage 6-2, (the stage before the Dark Level/Two Super Soldiers), use the cheat code if necessary.

Basically, upon opening the door into the wine cellar, you’re basically fighting a bunch of Black Guards and Elite Guards for the whole stage. Equip yourself Thompson, and literally blow your way through the stage as fast as you can. Since you’re forcing yourself to go fast, you’re gonna needa score a lot of headshots and take down the enemies before you find yourself surrounded. Oh yeah, no health, food, or armour pick-ups allowed. 100 health, 100 armour is all you get for the whole stage.

After doing it with the Thompson, try the MP40, then try Dual Colts. I find the FG42 doesn’t work too well, cuz it’s accuracy is piss poor while on the run or continuous fire. (while ET smg’s retain a lot of accuracy in any situation)

feel free to use the /give all code at the start, so you have enough .45 cal to last you the stage.

I don’t know about off-line practise, but the best on-line practise for ET (apart from ET of course) would be playing RTCW on head-shot only servers, of which there are a few.

I think it would be great if Bani incorporated a head-shot only mode into ETPro, as I’m sure Clans would use it for practise sessions. I know he’s been asked, but I don’t think he’s ever responded one way or the other.

Q3 deathmatch or CTF using railgun only is a good way to improve aim as its alot quicker than ET and you only have 1 chance with the enemy as hes either gonna shot you or your gonna shoot him, I played Q3 be4 I went to ET and I never played RTCW but I was alot betetr than the other noobs who just started ET as I could always land first shot on the enemy due to q3 CTF - railgun

Ur Engine

Thanks for the suggestions, all. I like the railgun idea. I never managed to survive the last level with the kung-fu master lookalike on anything above wuss level. I have the misfortune of living in an area too far from the nearest phone switching station to recieve DSL. My only other choice is getting raped monthly by the local cable assholes, who want $50 a month for cable modem, on top of the $50 for basic tv cable. I have Directv satellite, but I’m told it sucks for internet access. I’ve tried some of the modem servers, but ET is really unplayable on them. Arrrggghhhh!

Funny this topic should come up.

I still play q3a with my housemate every now and again, then afterwards if i go into ET I am a much better aimer.

I think it’s just that q3a makes my brain move faster than ET, so yeah for me at least, I agree. A good trainer.
