Punkbuster won't let me play (O/S Exception Notice)

I was playing along minding my own business when I needed to Alt+Tab out of the game for a second. When I did this, ET performed an illegal operation, crashed and I restarted it.

After I reconnected, my brightness settings had gone back to default, so I had to open the console, at which point I noticed PB going crazy and repeating the line:

Punkbuster Client: O/S Exception Notice

Over and over and over. I thought “this can’t be good” but ignored it and carried on playing. Abotu 20 seconds later, I got kicked with the message:

Server disconnected - You have been kicked via Punkbuster (for 0 minutes)
... PB INIT FAILURE

So I tried to reconnect. No can do. After connecting it keeps giving me an error number which changes each time, here’s 4 of them, I gave up after this:

CL_ParseServerMessage: Illegible server message 105

CL_ParseServerMessage: Illegible server message 157

CL_ParseServerMessage: Illegible server message 254

CL_ParseServerMessage: Illegible server message 200

What’s going on? It’s a standard install, no scripts or anything like that.

As far as I know you have to have admin rights on your OS.
This change has taken place with some of the latest pb updates.
So may be this is a reason.

I and lost of people I know get this sometimes. Restarting ET solves it most of the time.

I am always logged in as admin.

I left it for 10 mins and it let me connect again. Problem is it had reset all my XP to zero, so I stopped playing anyway.

Or maybe you are just being busted for having Punk in your nick :stuck_out_tongue:

After a ‘PB INIT FAILURE’, you’ll be temporarily blacklisted–any further connection attempts from that IP will be booted fairly quickly if PB doesn’t start talking to the server when the server asks it to.

OK Thanks. I checked out the punksbusted forum but it’s not a very nice place, just millions of posts complaining about PB and the regulars and mods complaining about everybody complaining. The solutions I found were for people who didn’t have Admin rights, but apparantly PB/ET/XP ‘forgets’ your rights sometimes and you get kicked. It hasn’t happened since, so I won’t start messing with my system just yet.

u mean u need admin rights to PLAY on punkbuster servers, i thoughtit was just to host them, tbh i dont see why it makes any difference

I get the same warning too (Punkbuster Client: O/S Exception Notice), even when not playing on pb servers. I don’t get an error message though, ET just crashes (et.exe has encountered a problem…) after a few seconds of play or during mapload. I get this about half the time.

Release Notes for PB Client v1.092:

addressed bug that was causing O/S Exception Notices for some players

Perhaps a good idea to inform Evenbalance that the problem still exists?

What are you saying Rain? I dont have a problem with you. What I do have a problem with is people who just go on moaning about things they know nothing about, which is what my reply was directed at.

I have had the crash once tho, which is quite annoying.

Your = possessive pronoun, e.g. “Is that your hamster?�
You’re = contraction of “you areâ€?, e.g. “Rain, you’re an ass for whining about this.â€?

I must just be dead dead lucky because I don’t seem to experience the same problems as half you guys. I run Windows 2000 on pretty knackered hardware and the worst it gets for me is ‘server is for low pings only’ (why do I always say that back in my head in a german accent - doh) and then some stupid auth error - I pretty convinced now that most of the problems I read about here are either caused by or complicated by running XP. When I do get access to a decent BB connection, it’s usually @ my parents house where of course I set them up with an XP machine - only then do I begin to see such issues.

Yeah, like you would use a wallhack etc on a server O_o. And that he doesnt know the diff between a normal user and an admin :stuck_out_tongue:
