PunkBuster Client Warning

(Rippin Kitten) #1

I keep getting this message on a server I play on locally:

PunkBuster Client: WARNING: Locked CVAR Violated Detected - Kicking Temporarily Disabled

I’m not entirely sure what that means. I’m not using any cvars that are outside the server’s cvar list. Kicking seems to work just fine, as the admin was able to remove some disruptive players using PB kicks and punkbuster still caught two guys using aimbots. If this is something wrong on my end, hopefully someone can tell me what’s going on. If its something on the server, I know the guy who owns the box and it’d be nice if I could pass along any info to him to get this resolved.

Like I said, it doesn’t seem to be that big of an issue. But it’d be nice to clear it up.

That warning is issued if you have cheat protected cvar which is outside the cheat protected values. Apperently, this detection is still buggy, so pb does not kick for that specific violation.

If you run a local server with cheats enable, and do, say, r_showtris 1 you will get that error message. Apperently some people get it on non-cheat enabled servers too, even though they are not hacking the cheat protection, though I haven’t seen it myself.

If you are worried about people abusing cheat protected cvars, (which you should be, IMO) you should put them explicitly in your pb config.

I get that warning on occasions, despite the fact I haven’t changed a single cvar manually.

Infact I’m not even sure what cvars there are.

I know several people who’ve had this problem (including myself), and when I asked EB about it they said they were “investigating” and working on a “test build”. That was almost a month ago…

Ah ha… That could explain why I was getting it… I was watching some demos with r_shownormals 1 a few weeks ago (to look for wallhacks after a post on Planet Wolfenstein)… It probably remembered it in the config. I’ll check this later when I get home, cheers.

That shouldn’t explain it, because you should not be able to have a cheatprotected cvar set unless you are on a cheat enable server, or are playing a demo. Even if the value was stored in your config (which it shouldn’t be) it should not stay set when you join a game, and if it did, you would see normals everywhere.

Whatever causes this isn’t that simple (which probably explains why evenbalance has taken a few months without fixing it)

I get this error message and I have made zero changes to default ET’s settings. I emailed punkbuster about it and havent received a response.

maybe take a note of any settings/binds you have changed and just delete your profile and make another. should reset your whole config so while it seems a bit of a pain in the rear, something would be very :eek3: if it doesnt sort it.
