PS3 Network quality - how is Brink running for you?

(fearlessfox) #1

Right now - OK!

Seems like I jumped the gun a little, while it can take a while to find a stable game at times, I’ve been in quite a few now that have served full human teams and played well enough to enjoy.

It’s not perfect, there’s still a little muddiness and lack of response at times, but no hideous rubber banding as a constant.

SD definitely need to fix up their online stability here, but if this is the state of things while they know they need to fix it and it can only get better… well, we’re in for a treat when it does!

Pretty much unplayable if I have more than 1 human on the team besides me. :frowning:

I’m from Midwest US. 20 mb down 2 up on my cable speed. Hardwired straight to my router. Only game I’ve ever had unplayable lag with on my PS3  blah.

EDIT: And it just froze my PS3 again. About 2 out of the 10 online games I’ve played I’ve had to hard reset my PS3 because it froze up. I hate hard-resetting my PS3. I may have to stop trying to play through this lag until it’s patched because I don’t want this to hurt it in the long run.

(SladeNoctis) #3

Ibeen doing good so far, some lag gitters in some places but thats because i had a player with a red low connection. But the netcoding needs some work, man if this had dedicated servers sadly the budget on the game wasn’t that high for more features.

(engiebenjy) #4

Reasonable, I hosted a game (or at least i think i did) with 5 others and there wasnt any lag issues (but i guess a host wouldnt experience any?). I then played another game where there were more players and rubberbanded alot

U do realise 2mb is quite a low online speed to be playing with, it’s basically minimum speed for online gaming.

@ person asking ,Even if u are host you can have lag btw , as there’s something calked host compensation , which attempts to balance out the advantage a host has. It’s all about getting that right as well as rest of net code.

You do realize I said 20 down 2 up? That means 20 mb down, 2 mb up. 2 mb up is actually quite good, and being a stable connection, I rarely experience any trouble at all unless it’s the host that is having issues.

I work for a cable company. I know internet speeds.

Lol my bad I misread , I’m on iPhone and screen is tiny.
What’s ur ping? Is it fibre optic?
I had horrific issues on black ops to start with despite good ping speeds. Guess it’s just bad net code

One more note on this, and do not take this as fanboyism because I really like Brink.

A friend of mine who doesn’t have Brink asked me to play Blops with him for a bit. After going from brink’s extreme lag issues, to Blops where everything was fluid. When I pushed a button it instantly reacted. No rubberbanding. It’s a night and day difference sadly. I want Brink to have a fluid online experience, and I don’t see why it can’t have that. I want to see it so badly. But until it’s patched, I don’t want to sour myself on an otherwise great game.

As people have said before, it’s almost like playing a beta, waiting on the next patch, realizing this isn’t a finished product that’s still being fine tuned. I really like Brink. Hell, I pre-ordered it, and I have researched every bit of this game I possible could pre-release. But I don’t want to hate it before it’s fixed.

Brink is a new IP, BLOPS is generic kill commie islamofascist brownie russians shooter 2010 editon

Brink is going to have some growing pains.

I would say 6 out of 10 games are fine, connection-wise. And there is a mini-patch coming out to fix some of the connections problems.

Update (5/15): With PSN back up, the configuration change for Brink is being rolled out tonight and will be available worldwide soon. Want to know if you’ve gotten the update? Look for “Big Teams” in the public match settings (see screenshot above).

Original Post: We have been working on updates for Brink to address the lag issue that some people have reported they were experiencing.

In the meantime, we have made a configuration change for 360 users (which will be available to the PS3, once PSN is up) that alters the number of human players when matchmaking for “Campaign” and most ‘Freeplay’ modes to eight total human players. This new configuration will allow those connecting to and hosting matches (particularly those with lower upstream bandwidth) to more reliably find and connect to quality hosts via the match-making process – resulting in less lag and more fun. This change is being rolled out today and will be available worldwide.

For players who haven’t been experienced lag, we’ll still support 8v8 on all maps via a new ‘Big Teams’ configuration in Freeplay, and through custom settings in Private matches. There is no download required for this update and it will be available automatically the next time you log in to play Brink and launch either campaign or standard Freeplay matches. This should allow players new to the Ark as well as veterans to find quality matches suitable to their preferred play style.

We are also releasing an incremental update for PC players via Steam that addresses AI, GPU, and server issues. See the full release notes on Steam. Many of these fixes are being included in the full update for the 360 and PS3 versions.

We would like to thank you for supporting Brink and for your continued feedback. To show our appreciation for your support of Brink, we will be making the first DLC for Brink available for free when it is released. This DLC is planned for June and will offer additional maps and new content for players. We’ll continue to provide announcements about the next title update, as well as the first DLC release as that information becomes available.

I played a Co-Op with 2 people and it ran really smooth.
BTW it’s latency (not bandwidth) that matters in a p2p network game, so you can all stop posting your MBs.

@DouglasDanger

I understand right out of the box, that Brink won’t have a perfect online component. I understand lag here and there, totally. And to be honest, I’m normally not a big complainer about things. A bad game here and there, big deal, eh.

So far the only playable game for me online is with 1-2 humans with me and the rest bots. Period. If there are anymore, it really goes downhill incredibly fast to unplayable for me. I told myself I want to wait for things to get patched up before I continue to play because I’m afraid of the freezes hurting my PS3, and I don’t want to experience this game at 25%-30% of what it’s potential is.

I hope everyone else is having better luck with it than I am currently.

EDIT: And yes, I read your post about the patch, and I will try later tonight. Hopefully the smaller team setup or whatever they’re doing solves it for the short term. At least until they can fix it for 8v8 human games.

lol except, ive heard that one used beforewhen someone knows nothing about network speeds, or the other favourite forum line, is I am a developer lol

it was simple reading error.

Anyway,i have a latency of 13ms when its good, and about 25-30 when bad.( i did speed test before and got 25, have got 30, and getting 13 ms now) so have decent connection, but yet I had major issues with blops on ps3, and then on 360 when i got rid of my ps3 version(although it worked fine for 3 weeks on 360 until a patch messed it up), so I think although ppl’s connections are also having an impact, i reckon majority of issues are in the netcoding and assigning of suitable hosts etc. I had same issues with crysis 2, but none with mw2 and other online games, yet itn forums i went on others were fine on those games.

often it seems to be luck of draw

(dougieskater97) #15

what the hell is everyone gettin on with ? , on my ps3 , online matches in brink play almost perfectly , sometimes there is a little lag , but nothing big enough to complain about . :stroggtapir:

(RadBrad31) #16

That’s through my wireless. PS3 is hardwired to the router, so you’d have to assume the connection is better there. If there’s something I can do to improve my connection or the way my PS3 handles the game while online, I will be more than happy to give it a try. I just don’t think there’s much I can do and that I’ll have to wait for the patches.

Just guessing though. Maybe it is just me.

have u forwarded ur ports or put ps3 in dmz??
it can really help with connection issues, and isnt dangerous at all putting ps3 in dmz, although not recommended for ur pc ( i left it there after the blops debacle)[/QUOTE]

(RadBrad31) #19

I will try putting my PS3 in the dmz. I haven’t forwarded any ports, I didn’t think that would be necessary, but if it is I can try that too. Thank you for the advice.

Just to help you a bit more, latency is relative (Between a server/client), so that is the ping to the speed test site not to all servers. Brink is P2P, but I think it’s really a roaming host design, so find someone with a good host that you have a good ping time to and the game will be smoother for you. Or set up one yourself… that will be optimal for you: Custome Game I think will accomplish this.
