Probs starting game

(zig-zag) #1

My problem started when the network I’m on changed workgroup names.
My IP, Gateway, and DNS info is all the same as before, which originally let me play online just fine. I can browse the internet (I’m currently using those settings to come here), but the game won’t start. It just hangs on the gray startup screen. When I remove the Gateway and DNS info from my connection the game starts just fine, which is how I know it’s my connection settings causing the problem, but I can’t get online without a gateway.
How is it I can browse sites (not cached ones, but all) but the game won’t accept those settings as valid? I really need my ET fix. PLease help!

i have a similar problem… maybe…
when i try to connect the game stops at “awaiting gamestate” and does not connect to the server any further. i also have gateway and dns settings in my network config (win2k) to go online via router… any ideas?

That’s really weird. Workgroup name should only matter to Windows file sharing (or domain logins if you have those). Programs like web browsers and FPS shouldn’t care about the workgroup at all, or even be able to detect it.

As a quick attempt to fix any connection problem, you might try to move the etmain/etkey file to some backup location. That might cause it to regenerate your CD-Key on startup, and who knows, it might have got some bad data stuck in there.

Question: Do you have punkbuster enabled? It sounds like you don’t. Normally if PB can’t connect to the internet, you won’t even make it to the main menu. If PB can connect (or is disabled), but ET can’t connect, then you’ll see an empty server list.

I have a faint memory that cl_autoupdate “1” used to cause this problem for some people in RtCW. Edit your config (not sure if it’s the one in etmain or in your profile, so edit both) and change it to cl_autoupdate “0”.
