Problems Viewing Game

(diddypete) #1

ive just downloaded Wolfenstein enemy territory and it installed without problems. When i start the game though it suddenly becomes unreadable as if the whole screen has been combed in lines slightly diagonally. I can still click buttons if i can work out where they are so it seems to be the resolution or something that is off. Interestingly when i pressed the windows button to try and get out everything becomes perfect and readable but if i click back into this then it goes squiffy again. Ive tried reinstalling but no difference.

Im not hugely computer savvy so im guessing its something quite simple, but everything ive tried doesnt make a difference

2 possibilities I can think of:

  • Your screen does not support low resolutions 800x600
If this is the case make a new txt file in C:/Program Files/Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory/etmain/
call it autoexec.cfg (make sure the format is .cfg and not .txt)
Open it and add these lines:
r_customwidth <The first number of your reslution, for instance 1280>
    r_customheight <Other number for instance 1024>
    r_mode -1
    vid_restart

So if you resolution is 1280x1024 you’d type this:

r_customwidth 1280
r_customheight 1024
r_mode -1
vid_restart

Then when the game starts and the problem is still occurring try opening the console with the tilde key and typing /exec autoexec.cfg

  • Second possible cause I can think of is your graphics drivers, try updating them.

Thanks for this, ive tried saving the file in the folder, but it says im not authorised to save it there. Any way around that?

In terms of drivers its a brand new laptop.

Windows 7 I guess. Installed in Program Files? Not copy/pasta?

(Nail) #5

install game with WIN XP compatibilty under admin

(diddypete) #6

Nice one got it to work now! Well partly… i can now view the game, view the forums, click into the game choices, download all sorts of patches, but then i get stuck either with

game code (ui_mp_x86.dll) failed pure server check

or

server timeout

Any thoughts to sort this?

(diddypete) #10

Ace, ok hopefully final issue, the 2.60 downloaded fine, the 2.60b wont let me load it:

ET 2.60b win-x86 May 8 2006
----- FS_Startup -----
Current search path:
C:\Users\Downloads\et-2.60b\Enemy Territory 2.60b\win32/etmain

0 files in pk3 files
----- CL_Shutdown -----

Couldn’t load default.cfg - I am missing essential files - verify your installation?

(diddypete) #14

Win7 gives some troubles about compatibility with old programs/games, so I install on my side out of the overprotected folder Program Files all that stuff.

If you experience random freezes, try disabling the Desktop Composition in the Compatibility part of the ET.exe settings. You may also need to force disabled V-Sync if you’ve the NVidia Panel, and also Threaded Optimization… I needed all that stuff to make it runs fine. Gtk is still slow though…
