Problems starting ET

(Chruker) #1

Hi

I just installed ET on an old linux server, however I’m getting this error when I try to start the dedicated server.

[root@server enemy-territory]# ./etded
ET 2.60 linux-i386 Mar 10 2005
Illegal instruction

Thats all the output I get. And etded.x86, et and et.x86 gives the same response.

What could be the problem?

Its a Red Hat Linux 7.3 system. It has glibc 2.2.5-44 installed. Kernel version is 2.4.20-28.7

The CPU is an old AMD K6-2 450 MHz and there is an amazing amount of 96 MB RAM.

However I successfully ran the 2.56 version of ET on my laptop which has a 233 MHz Pentium non-mmx and 96 MB RAM.

The official minimum system requirements for ET state a p3 or better, and although the game will technically run on some older systems, you can only go back so far.
The way the binaries are built makes it unlikely that anything before a Pentium Pro will work correctly, and to that end I’m actually a bit surprised that your p1 works. Off the top of my head, I’m not sure which instruction the K6-2 lacks that the p1 has.
