Pr0 Gam0rz disease

(Maximus191) #1

I’ve noticed through chatting with some of you guys on comms that some of you are starting to get the odd aches and pains from playing too much E.t/Rtcw.
These odd pains could be just that, odd individual pains and nothing to worry about or they could be something else far far worse R.S.I !!

I’ve decided to put up a post to try and give advice on this crippling and extremely painfull illness.

First of all i’ll write a short bit about my experiences with this condition.
As alot of you may or may not know (depending who is reading this) i used to play a rediculous amount of Rtcw/E.t and for a while everything was fine and dandy.
Then one day i noticed the little finger on my mouse hand starting to hurt (right on the knuckle).
I soldiered on for a while untill it was really hurting.I then went to the doctor to see what he said.
He sent me away with some anti-inflamatory gell which i used for 2 weeks. After the treatment the pain had gone and i thought no more about it for 4 months, when all of a sudden the pain was back in my little finger and i noticed my little finger and the one up from it on my left hand had gone numb right on the tips.
This didnt really hurt so i just carried on playing just stopping to massage my little finger every now and then.
After another month i began to notice that my knuckles on my mouse hand would burn and give little sharp stabs of pain for the first 20 mins of playing and would then go away.
Once again i thought nothing of it and carried on thinking it was just a strain and it would get better.
Eventually the burning pain and pins and needles/numbness started effecting me during my working day and by now i was getting alarmed.
Then finally one Sunday i played my final match in Rtcw. It was against the Beer clan. In the warmup i could hardly move my mouse hand because of the pain, but after 10 mins it went away and i finished the match.
When i awoke in the morning i was in agony. Best way to describe it is it was like a tooth ache but in my right arm.
Pain would just flow and ebb up and down my arm constantly and i had to post on here and go inactive.I could’nt even hold my mouse let alone play a match.
I had to wait a month for a Doctors appointment and when i got it i had blood tests (3 of,all negative) and i was booked into physiotherapy and also i was given a months course of anti inflamatories to take.
I ended up having to wear rist splints all the time and also i began an intensive course of physio therapy on my shot to hell rists and damaged nerves in my hands.
12 weeks later it no longer hurts that much when im not on a computer and does hurt a bit when im on the p.c (like writeing this post )
I have rist and posture exercises to do every hour and also i have back strengthening exercises to do once a day.
It’s been hard work and even though i am not yet fully recovered i am heading in the righ tdirection and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Ok onto things that can help anyone worried about R.s.i :

First of all the main damage you can do is wrist damage.Either the carpal tunnel gets inflamed in your rist pinching the median nerve (this causes the numbness) or the ulnar nerve get’s damaged.

Check out the above link for info on capal tunnel damage.
The trick is to catch R.s.i early. The earlier the quicker you can heal from it.
http://eeshop.unl.edu/rsi.html
The above link gives more info on R.s.i and is well worth checking out.

Now how do we go about combating this terrible disease.
Of vital importance is workstation ergonomics. Your rists should ne straight when playing, not resting on the table.
Back properly supported and feet flat on the floor.
Bent rists damage your median nerve.Get a keyboard pillow or a mouse bean for your mouse to support your hands.

https://secure.posturite.co.uk/acatalog/Wrist__Supports.html

Also take regular breaks from your pc. About 10 mins break for every hour you play. This break invloves leaving the p.c and not sitting there infront of it.Get up walk around ,stretch your arms out.Anything to unlock your body after it’s been in this rigid position playing games for hours on end.
When your inlimbo waiting to respawn, take your arms off the mouse pad and keyboard.move them around in large movements and stretch them out as this will help.

Don’t end up in teh nightmare i have been in and whatever you do don’t think it can’t happen to you because thats what i thought
If you ever have any questions on ergonomics,r.si or anything else related to this pm me in irc or on this webby.

Happy and safe gaming everyone.
Max :XX

The above is a thread i put up on my clan website a while back.It has now been 32 weeks since i had to stop playing E.t and since this post i have also had to have steroid injections in both of my wrists to try and calmdown the inflamation and pain around my median nerve.
Finally i now have to wait for 8 weeks and then i’m off for an operation on my wrists to hopefully cure this problem i have been having
*

Hopefully after all this i can get back to full health and with the improvements in my worksurface ergonomics i can get back to playing a few games.
Btw i don’t blame the game E.t for my problems in any way (allthough it is damn addictive :stuck_out_tongue: ) i just wanted to make sure as many people as possible are eductated to the dangers of Rsi and to this end this post has appeared on several gaming web sites and not all of them for E.t.

If i can prevent one person from going through what i have had to suffer then this will make me feel a lot better.
Once again happy and safe gaming you crazy kids :X

Good article  - Whilst I don’t suffer from pains in my fingers or wrists, because I use an optical mouse I find that after hours of play I get dark ‘burn’ marks on the edges of my thumb and little finger. Of course it disappears overnight but it still happens all the same.

Neck ache is more of a problem.

The worst problem for me is that I have always sat cross-legged at my PC - even at work tbh (makes for some interesting comments) - dunno how it happened exactly, but recently I began to notice a numbness in the toes of my left-foot. It hasn’t gone away and is causing me come concern - I’m off to see the doc on Yuesday to get a long-overdue check-up and make sure I haven’t done some serous damage.

As a result of your post, I’ll make sure I go this time ;0

good post. as i work at the same PC that i also play ET on i find im sat at my desk for upto 16 hours a day. I get very bad aches in my right shoulder cuased by the fact that i have a tiny cramped working space. im really looking forward to moving to a larger flat and getting a proper desk at some point so that i can play in comfort. i also get really bad eye strain. Ive been to the doctor about this and as maximus mentioned you can help yourself to avoid all these things by taking a short break every hour. I have to get up and walk around every hour or so otherwsie by the end of the day my eyes are so red they look like they’re bleeding and my shoulder aches so much that i cant play properly.

I had R.S.I - but when i switched to an optical mouse it was gone within 4weeks

no, i get marks on my leg from the desk digging into my ankle wehn i rest my feet on the back but nothing else, although i have had the black figer thing evilsock said he had

I really hope you have cured your problem. But be very carfeul. If your pain went away in 4 weeks then it could have only been a mild case and you defo need to heed my advice to prevent you from having problems in the future.
Rsi is mainly caused from bad posture.Your shoulders roll forward pinching nerves and blood supply to your arms etc which inturn causes more pain.
Rsi is really a total upper body illness.
How many of you have sore necks, shoulders or backs from too much gaming? As these are signs of rsi aswell.

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #7

wots rsi? dose it start for anything?

(ElderNewb) #8

I know that when I have been playing for a long time, over 6 hours (usually in LAN parties i might ) that part of my hand would get sore. You that bumpy area on the opposite side from the thumb, at the wrist. Just there - very annoying.

Apart from that sounds like i have been very lucky , so far, even though I’d be on the computer say 14 hours a day both work and play.

I’ve known about RSI for years so i have been very careful. Can i ask you guys do you put the little feet up on your keyboards?? Cause that’s actually a bad thing. the wrist doesn’t’ t like being at that angle all the time. You can only really get way with it if you have a decent wrist rest.

Also i have my pc in such a fashion that my whole forearm is on the table. It helps posture and takes the weight off the wrist a bit

There’s a few othewr things like table and chairs height but i guess would know about that stuff.

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #9

there is a peice of wood at the back of my desk that i sometimes out my feet up for, i have never heard of rsi

(BondyBoy007) #10

Yep I read it a while back when I was browsing your webby

I have had periods of slight pain in my wrists which I always put down to too much fps action, but since I’ve moved desks in work it’s completly gone so it was my badly laid out desk at work that was the culprit (can I sue  ).

Crazy nutter - RSI stands for Repetitive Strain Injury see 1st hit from google http://eeshop.unl.edu/rsi.html

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #11

sue sue sue :stuck_out_tongue:

nahh my neck sometimes feels slightly stifff but most of the time its fine

(Salteh) #12

No!
Can’t stand the feet…
or uber high keyboards :bash:

(Fusen) #13

I cant stand keyboards without feet… but then I suppose thats like one of the only things good about pigeon typing the old one finger on each hand typing away with your whole hand in the air… as unluike you touch typers out there we dont rest the end of our palms on keyboards =P… worst thing I get is red soft skin on very bottom of palm where your wrist starts because it rubs off the mousematt so much but not really anything bad… we got told about RSI and had to do hand excerises in I.T at school lol we all had to stand up and do random things … felt bit of a tard at the time but suppose its all good in the long run

(pgh) #14

Thanks to Maximus and I have already posted comments elsewhere on RSI.

I’ve actually cut my playing time to < 2 hours a night as I find sitting in front of a computer all day for around 9 hours Monday-Friday and around at least 4/5 hours at night after work sitting playing, some nights even 6/7 hours solid till 4am. Been like this on and off for around 2 years and after reading the forum thread from T! webby it kinda made me realise I wasnt helping the matter…

Since fkin off from sSs aint bothered to get back into clan play but asked around anyway and since have just stuck to random playings of CoD, ET and PK 1 on 1’s… kinda realised if I lost feeling in my hands then 3 important things are lost; Self Induldging :P, Skinning up and Using a computer (at least, efficiently.).

(mouse) #15

I have some strange feeling in my right shoulder since 1 month, since then i play a bit less and watch how i sit more closely. I also play to buy a penpad, so i can use the mouse a little less.

(seven_dc) #16

I have really bad shoulder pain right now. I was having diffuculties at work because my shoulder was so shore. Finally I come up with the solution. I learned to use mouse with my left had. So Now I use mouse with my left hand at work and right at home. The pain has gone away. Sometimes the pain comes back after intense mapping and gaming. Then I take little brake do shoulder excercises and strech my muscles.

Drug test

(evilsock) #17

pgh - careful with the gear also - one of the reasons I’m off to see the doc is because I have nasty stomach pains - as nice as gear is, it can mask physcial ailments which left unchecked can become serious. At the moment, I’ve had to give coffee up and every time I drink a cup of tea I’m having to swig a decent amount of milk before hand - no beer for me either - causes too much pain - I’m quite worried I’ve developed an ulcer.

(pgh) #18

Ill pm the reply for this one m8…

(SwordOfDamocles) #19

Fuck me…zimmer frames next u poor bastards. Saying that, I don’t get RSI at all playing the odd bout of ET simply because I spend too much time lifting heavy weights into minis at a particular factory in Oxford. My RSI is work related and thankfully not ET related, which means I can at least enjoy the time I have off sick.

(ElderNewb) #20

so you do have rsi which mean you are in the same position as us poor bastards. Hang on i think a got a spare zimmer frame somewhere :blah:
