Post E3 2006 feedback/constructive comments

(nUllSkillZ) #41

Sorry if the following has been mentioned before.
But may be mention some things twice could get an open ear.

Some thoughts, comments and personal likes / dislikes from ingame-movies I have seen:

  • [li]The animation of throwing the supply packs (med- and ammo-packs) doesn’t look right.
    [/li]Not exactly sure whats wrong.
[li]Grenades are held in the left hand.
[/li]As a person that uses right hand it looks weird.
May be carrieing all the weapons in one hand (left or right).
And it’s chooseble which hand it is (for left handed or right handed persons).
[li]Enemies health and name shouldn’t be visible (only for the players that are in disguise).
    [/li]W:ET-like
[li]The symbols above the heads of the players shouldn’t be visible all the time.
    [/li]Also W:ET like (V6: " I am a …")
But may be this is needed to fullfill the objective (“Guard the engineer to …”).
[li]I don’t like the mousedriven voicechat menu (I’ve seen this in BF2).
[/li]After opening the menu you can’t turn with your mouse which would normally happen.
    Hopefully there’s an alternative
    [li]The player speed is great.
[/li]I like this fast paced action.

Actually only minor things.

From what I’ve read in the “hands on” reports this game must be great.

Hopefully there will be some kind of open “betatest” before the release to give some gameplay based critic.

Edit:

I knew I forget something.
I’m getting old.

I like that you aren’t able to fire while running.
(UT:2004:Red Orchestra-like)
Not sure if the gun should point up- or downwards.
To me upwards seem more natural (but then the gun is in the middle of the screen and you can’t see that much).

I’d like a smaller crosshair too, just like many others here. Or is it customizable like in W:ET ? And yeah, keep the vsay’s of Wolf:D

(4days) #43

customisable crosshairs  (which makes me wonder about cfgs/scripting, will etqw have similar scripting abilities to wet?)

the mouse-driven menu in bf2 works pretty well, but it’d be really good to have the ‘traditional’ method as well/instead - especially at the pace qw looks to be moving at.

they had enemy identification in the TC mod for Q3 for a bit and it sucked, if it is a server controlled cvar, the default should be 0. likewise in bf2, it’s pretty easy to keep someone you can’t actually see (through foliage/smoke etc) in your crosshair once you’ve id’d them, and that’s never felt right.

it changes the game a lot when bf2 servers disable switching between 1st and 3rd person while driving vehicles - forcing 1st person makes for a more stressful game and there’s a bit more immersiveness to it, but it alienates a lot of people. the fact that you’ve normally got a few camera angles to choose from emphasises the difference - a lot of people will be switching between views just because it makes steering so much easier. if the option to lock it to 1st was there for admins that want it, but the default was to allow toggling between 1st/3rd/other, that’d be spot on.

would like to see some more info/footage on the vehicles - there are a lot of vehicle combat games out there, but none of them have really hit the spot yet. there’s that feeling of pliant, responsive movement you get with q3 engined stuff that’s found it’s way into q4. keen to see how that translates to ground and air vehicles. e.g. would it be worth using a joystick for air vehicles, or are they aiming to be much more mouse-friendly?

(madness) #44

if you look at the menu, you’ll see that there is a number on each of the options.
My guess is, that you can use either mouse or numbers on keyboard (ala v57 etc :P)

(kamikazee) #45

It should be possible then to stop the mouse from locking onto the menu… so you can still look around.

(Zyklon) #46

And shoot. What is good in ET that you can still defend yourself when caught voicechatting. You sure have something obstructing, but you can defend yourself and don’t have to close a huge menu on your screen.

(Ciabs) #47

my primary concern would be about the asymmetric gameplay that seems to be somewhat crippled at this moment, with Stroggs able to revive fallen teammates and GDF covertops able to disguise themselves…

that’s just plain wrong, it negates the possibilities for different tactics with different teams, I really hope they’re not gonna leave things as they are…

even better it’d be if someone from up there can reassure us there won’t be such non-asymmetric gameplay in the gold version…

I hope there will be a change in the voice menu. Not the menu like Battlefield 2, the menu fills the whole screen. We cannot look on the battlefield when selecting a voice options. And there doesn’t seem to be shortcut keys for the menu. Moving the mouse trough the menu makes you inmobile and a big target on the battlefield.
I found the trailer and the gameplay movies very entertaining.
But there came a few things to my attention.
Where is the gore ala RCTW. :banghead:
There is no gore in the movies. The only thing you see is the soldiers falling on there backs, waiting for a medic.
In one of the gameplay movies a soldier jumps of a building, instead bursting into little pieces like RTCW, he also falls on his back (waiting for a medic). Hope this game will also have gore like RTCW or Quake 4.
And please remove the hit sounds, please make it like RTCW where you see the blood splatter from bodies, this gives a extra feel to the game (The RTCW or W:ET feel). This give more skill to the game.
The way the game is becoming I hope it will not be to user friendly. Or becoming a kiddy game where every thing is done or pointed out for you. I also want to think and do things my way.

Just because E3 players were too lame to use keyboard shortcuts - not to mention shooting enemies instead of friendlies (check out what does the Oppressor from long gameplay video do) … doesn’t mean it’s not there. Just because you see a covert op shooting Goliath walker with silenced pistol, doesn’t mean it’s the best weapon for the job. Just because you see people switch to 3rd person view once in vehicle - it doesn’t mean 3rd person is not retarded.

I hate hit sounds. It’s not like you can disable them on your client and everything is fine. Other people get unfair advantage in certain situations, for example when shooting Mg42 into smoke grenade cloud. Smoke cloud is supposed to obscure vision, not to be partially countered by some lame rambomedic feature. (I can’t think of anyone else who could come up with the idea).

(Schizma) #54

not to mention shooting enemies instead of friendlies

Isnt that what your supposed to do?

XT660

The problems the game has right now are twofold. First, the two sides are not visually different enough to tell friend from foe at a glance. Both the humans and Strogg side are outfitted in shades of brown and grey that made me have to put my crosshair over each person and look at the color of their health bar to see if I should shoot. This is less of a problem in a game that is slightly slower-paced like Battlefield 2, but the speed is ratcheted up a few notches here, and you need to clearly tell the teams apart. And within each team, it’s hard to quickly visually tell apart the different classes.

Hopefully this won’t be a problem in the final version. This was a big problem in Q4 before id software released bright Strogg & Marine skins.
I don’t want glow skins of course, but make sure you can tell Strogg from GDF soldiers easily.

(McAfee) #57

I hope SD fixed that bug from Wolf:ET where medics run just over you and forget to heal you…
Sometimes the bug is so big, they seem to consume their own health packs.
sigh, Damn stupid bots.

(bosx2) #58

:moo: this

everything shown is boring and stolen from other games, nothing innovative and NEW, too bad

(Shanks) #59

Well since there’s nothing new or innovative, please tell what other game allows to turn wounded enemies into spawn points, also point out another game that uses megatexture. Methinks if you stop being so bf2 fanboyish you’ll see that there’s plenty of new and innovative features that benefit gameplay.

(bosx2) #60

mobile spawn points are NOT new, BF:V had that already and bf2 too.
The Megatextures are a joke. low res textures are no excuse in 2006.
Tell me ONE thing that you call innovative. I doubt you will find something. a shame really…
