Please tell me I can turn off the auto walking when healing!!

(General_Zod) #1

I’m talking pc version, and I’ve played ET and ETQW for years, and there was a finesse to healing people on the fly and getting back into the fight. I was actually surprised the first time I went to heal and I’m like, this game is actually moving for me?!

So I attempted to get used to that but I realized I’m running up to a teammate while holding F and then standing there and then healing. Standing there obviously in these games is a bad idea.

So I tried to totally ignore that it’s ‘assisting’ me and run and heal ET style. It almost works, but not only does it move you in the gamespace, it will change your orientation (ie. mouselook). I’ve had times where I’m running up to a downed teammate to heal, and then another teammate runs by and my mouselook literally moves on its own to this guy and heals him!? Same thing when I’ve tried to heal two close by team mates. One is really weak, one barely needs health. Trying to heal the guy who is really weak, but I guess for a moment the other guy gets closer and it switches to him.

Look, I"m not going to get into the console bashing but I guess that’s why you made this. The healing in ET and ETQW was perfect. Yes I know this is different game, but auto-assist anything should be optional.

Yes I know I can ‘fight’ the auto assist and move my mouse or whatever, but during those moments I’m literally fighting the game to get it to do what I want to do.

I would be much happier learning the proper distance and angle to heal a guy on my own.

Please tell me there’s a cvar or something to turn this off. I doubt there is, cause it’s all probably part of the smart system, but sorry the way it’s implemented isn’t too smart.

i don’t know if there is anyway to turn it off but i would like to see it implemented cause I’m having this problem as a soldier throwing ammo packs to people who don’t even need it.

I would love this for all the buffs. So annoying to have your character run at some dude. Especially when its someone you don’t even want to heal.

(Wieke) #4

I don’t know of any way to turn this off. But I’d like to see one adden in a patch asap. I’d rather fail to deliver the buff than being pulled of track and getting disoriented.

I totally agree, I hate to lose the control of my character. There also a way to exploit with that system, you can lock a teammate very far and your character will accelerate beyond the max speed without anything else to do than holding a single key. As a heavy you can be faster than a light with that “feature”. You don’t even have to move, it’s automatic.

I don’t think this a good idea to keep this way.

I’d definitely vote for this change - I don’t like being dragged around in an FPS  Again, I can see this is a worthwhile benefit for new players, but from my point of view - if I’m too far away, my heal/buff attempt should simply fail. If I’m in range, I should be left to find the correct angle etc. myself, and if I don’t, it fails. Being able to turn this completely off would be perfect.

I dont like having my view out of my control. Irritates me even more with the objective wheel, since I like to run while pulling it up. Next thing I know, Im running into a wall. An arrow indicating the direction would be sufficient until I can see the yellow outline with the distance marker.

When I first heard that you would “chase” the person you were buffing or healing, I was like “hmm that seems like a good way to make sure it gets done.”

Imagine my surprise when I started buffing the wrong people and running out into the open when trying to heal an escort. I’d love for them to take it completely out. That would be fan freaking tastic.

(Psi Brain) #9

being pulled about is a sure way to die In a FPS.

(Decayed) #10

I agree it’s annoying but for the time being I just let go of the key and reorient and buff/heal the correct person.

(hailey) #11

seems like its there for console players :frowning:

It definitely needs to be changed, any kind of ‘auto-pilot’ in games is just wrong.

The person that you’re looking at should be the person that receives the buff, regardless of whoever is near by.

This reminds me. The game doesn’t make sense sometimes. Ever try to use a turret, or hack on objective, or plant a bomb and the option to do so just doesn’t appear? WTF! The “run to complete” function would best be used there, not on ambiguous circumstances with allies running around everywhere.

(SmokeCheeba) #14

Agreed, it should only be used on stationary objectives.

(General_Zod) #15

I’m glad others agree on this and hope it gets addressed. And I agree it should apply to all buffs. And yes I was going to mention that you run at warp speed when it goes into autopilot. It’s bad enough it auto does this for you, but to run faster than normally anyone can (including light) is just wrong.

On a side note, I really found it weird that shift sprint doesn’t need to be held down. At first I was like wtf? I believe the distinction there is because the key is both: sprint & smart.

So again, I’m trying to get used to how this game works and I’ve been just pressing sprint once and let go. I believe in this mode you are indicating to the game, I want to run but I don’t want to ‘smart’ climb that ledge i’m coming close to. But if you hold it down, it implements smart movement with whatever you encounter.

I can see the logic, however since I’ve been trying to stop holding down shift (cause right now I want to run and not climb) if I bump into something it stops my run which was not my intention. And to stop sprinting I press s for a second, something that seems alien in a fps.

This doesn’t bother me nearly as much as my first post, but it’s still feels off sprinting like this. However, I can see splitting sprint/smart is something they might not want to do.

BUT PLEASE CHANGE THE AUTOPILOT BUFFING. Or give us an option!

(Kebyh) #16

Agreed, please SD fix this.

Ressing somebody is the worst.

You can turn that off in the gameplay options; it really helps, lol.

(gasoline) #19

There are countless bad design choices like this. What were they thinking?

(Relandi) #20

I too would love to see an option to toggle the auto-follow/auto-face while buffing.

It’s extremely annoying, disorienting and ruins the fluidity that this game shines so well at.
