Thanks for responding Wils, glad to have SD’s opinion on this. And Dragon, sorry I didn’t remember you posting on my original thread, however…
Whilst I totally appreciate what SD have done and think the big maps, campaign mode, etc. is a fantastic concept and blows every other game out of the water as fas as I’m concerned for public play, it still leaves Clans with a headache.
To play a proper, fair, match, you’d need to play at least 2 Stopwatch rounds, ABBA format. Thats 4 rounds total, which even at 20 minutes a round is potentially a 1.5 hour game. At 30 minutes it’s a 2 hour game. When you consider most RTCW maps are 8 - 12 minutes a round (with Base the exception at 15 minutes), you can see the problem. Indeed, most leagues play 3 SW rounds so as to avoid there being too many draws. You’d then be talking about 2 - 3 hour games.
It’s just not going to happen, so smaller maps are a must. Trouble is there are loads of custom maps for RTCW, including several small “tourney” editions, but no-one plays them because the Clans can’t agree on which ones they should use.
I think SD could help out here by producing “tourney” editions of the ones they’ve already done. If they came from SD, and were therefore “official”, Clans would adopt them I’m sure.
There’s a lot of enthusiasm for E.T. in the RTCW Clan community, but it will dwindle eventually, and they’ll all return to RTCW if that’s the game they’re playing competitively.
And that’s without getting into arguments about servers! Look at any on-line game, and the number of public servers playing that game is proportional to the size of that game’s Clan community. If Clans don’t adopt E.T. we’ll soon be struggling to find somewhere to play it.
