Playing ET in a competition.

(Dragon) #1

I’d be interested to hear from the SplashDamage people, on how they feel ET should be played competitively.

Things like; Recommended Players per team for competition, competition settings, whether to play 1 map stop watch mode or play a Campaign with full XP.

Thoughts?

Have you seen this thread:-

I argued from the outset that big maps + XP = less likely to be adopted by Clans.

Don’t get me wrong, I love this game, and the response to the Full version has been incredibly enthusiastic, but there’s nothing in Full that improves the situation compared to Test as far as competition is concerned.

I still stand by what I said, in 6 months time E.T. will have replaced the current Market Garden / Tram / Depot / Custom Map / 32 - 64 player type servers, but they’ll still be more RTCW servers out there than E.T. :frowning:

Kendle, yep, saw it, replied to it at the time.

However, it doesn’t really address the issue of what splashdamage would recommend for competition. I mean, the incorporated OSP (Hello,it’s a Competion Mod) so you’d think they would have some thoughts on the matter.

It’d be nice if they could share em

There’s a couple of things you could do:

Play one map per match in SW mode (total gametime of up to one hour, although you may decide to reduce the timelimits on the maps to 20 minutes or something)

Play two maps in objective mode (various ways of cutting this - random maps, team chosen maps, team chosen sides, etc. Same one hour game time.)

Campaign mode is really more suited to public play, but it’s not beyond the realms of possibility for teams to play a campaign as a clan game.

There’s also an entire Last Man Standing mode which should be balanced for competition.

Note that we’re expecting a fair amount of third party mapping for ET, and intend to support that in various ways. If you wanted to create a pack of maps designed specifically for competition play, we could help you with that.

Cool, thanks Wils.

Your input as to Splash Damage’s intentions are greatly appreciated.

Clan Oxygen and I’m sure Team Dot (We’re both Aussie Clans, and I thought I’d better mention Dot, caus they is leet  ) would jump at the opportunity to test new maps, mods etc etc

Great Game SD

Thanks again

Thanks for responding Wils, glad to have SD’s opinion on this. And Dragon, sorry I didn’t remember you posting on my original thread, however…

Whilst I totally appreciate what SD have done and think the big maps, campaign mode, etc. is a fantastic concept and blows every other game out of the water as fas as I’m concerned for public play, it still leaves Clans with a headache.

To play a proper, fair, match, you’d need to play at least 2 Stopwatch rounds, ABBA format. Thats 4 rounds total, which even at 20 minutes a round is potentially a 1.5 hour game. At 30 minutes it’s a 2 hour game. When you consider most RTCW maps are 8 - 12 minutes a round (with Base the exception at 15 minutes), you can see the problem. Indeed, most leagues play 3 SW rounds so as to avoid there being too many draws. You’d then be talking about 2 - 3 hour games.

It’s just not going to happen, so smaller maps are a must. Trouble is there are loads of custom maps for RTCW, including several small “tourney” editions, but no-one plays them because the Clans can’t agree on which ones they should use.

I think SD could help out here by producing “tourney” editions of the ones they’ve already done. If they came from SD, and were therefore “official”, Clans would adopt them I’m sure.

There’s a lot of enthusiasm for E.T. in the RTCW Clan community, but it will dwindle eventually, and they’ll all return to RTCW if that’s the game they’re playing competitively.

And that’s without getting into arguments about servers! Look at any on-line game, and the number of public servers playing that game is proportional to the size of that game’s Clan community. If Clans don’t adopt E.T. we’ll soon be struggling to find somewhere to play it.

y dont u try it in clan games then, u can lower the time limit for some maps find whats reasonable, railgun looks like a fast map, with SW u wont get crazy exp making it spammy, i dont think campaign will be for competition games great fun for pracs tho. Custom maps should also be popin up, alot of the maps look as if a good team should be able to finsh them rather quickly, wouldnt judge how long the pub games go to be anything like clan games.
