Playing Dead

(WiGgLeRiCe) #1

I’ve seen this dirty trick implemented in several servers , the ability to play dead (lie on your back as if you were dead). I was wondering how does one do this trick?

:skull:

(Bludd) #2

I’ve never seen it. Are you sure they were on their back?

Playdead is a feature from the shrub mod. to do it simply type /playdead in console or easier still bind it to a key. If your a happy gibber like me people who playdead end up dead dead a lot

Oh, sweet Mary, mother of God. Every time I read the word “Shrub” in a sentence, it is followed by a description of yet another absolutely flabbergasting example of gameplay destroying “features”. For the love of Christ, will that guy please give it a rest? That goes for all makers of “funmods”. Go make a damned Q3 TC for fuck sakes! Leave my game alone! You’re slurping up servers like a sponge!

sacrilege intentional

Amen Bludd. Fucking Amen.

Either I have to spend the time to read all of the “features” of every shrub mod, or I have to stop playing on those servers. A bit of RTFM for myself.

I was caught by this tactic the other day. At first, I thought it was just me. Then when I asked the players on the system, they just laughed and said nothing about this “feature”. Nice to find I didn’t just imagine it.

The insanity that the published source will spawn aside, more and more shrub mods seem to me to be glorified cheat mods. One guy had it rigged so he’d drop like 100 grenades when he died. He called it a ‘nuke’, and thought it was quite funny.

Whats next? A BFG-1000 in the heavy weapons bank? Sheesh.

I think you need to visit the rehab clinic again friend - Shrub is an established mod that’s been around (as far as I know anyway) since RtCW days. One of the things that Shrub gives a game admin is choice - there are a lot of feature enabling cvars that come with it.

I can only speak for Shrub on RtCW as I chose to run the mod on my server - it’s actually very, very good. Ever heard of a goomba kill? mines, tripmines, uniform stealing, posion needles, grenade giving, ammo giving, smoke bombs, playdead, +salute, default equip changes (bino’s for all), change default clip levels, ‘fun’ mode, underwater revives, disable medics being able to grab an objective and heal themselves, spawncamping mechansim, teamwounding mechansim, teamkilling mechansim, swear parsing etc, etc. You can have it so that when an engineer dies, he leaves a grenade behind, or when a medic dies they leave a couple of medipacks behind .

If OSP and ETPro are for the ‘pro’ clan players, then shrub and banimod are for casual players who want to have fun. The cvars are configured and enabled server-side and my guess is that alot of the functionality that you see in ET owes something to the gaming enhancemets that these guys did for free in RtCW (i.e. they didn’t get paid by id or Activision)

Of course it’s always better to configure your server.cfg file locally and test it all out before going live - just like it’s a good idea to make sure that your gameplay isn’t too affected by changes. Bottom line, it’s down to the game server admin to select a good combination of cvars to enable gameplay and provide some longevitity to his/her server and map rotation.

*edit, maybe it’s time for an established and trusted ET gameserver admin to publish a good shrub default server.cfg - something that showcases a ‘good’ Shrub setup - this at least would give newer game admins a baseline that offered some of the featurs of shrub but without the sillyness - but you know, there’s no substitute for doing ot yourself and learning what works and what doesn’t. FWIW, on RtCW these days, you’d be hard pushed to find a non clanned game erver running ‘Beach’ without shrub - my guess is that 12 months from now, that’s how it’ll be with ET.

Yes, I’ve heard of those cancerous features. That’s no longer RtCW/ET. It’s more or less a new game, which illicited my plea for these people to go do just that; make a total conversion. If it catches on (like CS did, it’s more than possible), then woo-yay for them and I hope they make a mint and become the envy of the computer world. Meanwhile I can still merrily play the games I purchased…

Is it balls a new game! Most of shrubs features actually add more of an arcade feel to the game because it can be configured for lesser-skilled players to survive for longer (the fallen leave ammo, grenades and health behind for RtCW if the admin configures it to be that way). Think of shrub as a safety net for ET - it gives n00bs enough incentive to learn how to play. If they enjoy ET overall, then they’re going to migrate to ‘the real deal’, if not, at least there’s something for them to have a few laughs with - don’t see the problem me-self.

Rate of fire is more fundamental to a game me thinks - took me a lot longer to get used to the differences between RtCW and ET in that respect. Same with the weapons and altered classes - I could imagine how SD would want to made a standalone game out of their changes, but not for Shrub, banimod, OSP or ETPro.

Same as anything, give it time, get used to some of the extras by adding keybinds for them and if you don’t like it, just play vanilla ET or more likely ETPro

Yeah, my point isn’t that shrub isn’t fun… it’s great fun to have medic pinatas… but it’s features are so erradically applied on different servers that you never know what’s coming next. It’s like every map becomes the Wonka Chocolate Factory. It should be renamed “NoobAgain” mod because it makes me feel like I felt when I found out mines could be disarmed. It’s great fun when I’m stoned, but it’s aggravating when I’m tryiong to play the objective.

But no sweat, I just need to be aware of what the server’s running. I can pick and choose.

ASE > Mods > None

Ah, ya gotta love it (hopefully there’ll always be a handful of admins who think like me crosses fingers)…

Shrub rocks, so does ETPro. Same as Shrub on RtCW is great, and OSP is the comp mod.

So it’s horses for courses, although some whiny nags wander off their own course to butt into any thread with a mention of some game feature/mod they hate in order to show…well, I dunno just what they are showing, but it ain’t pretty.

Note how the haters are the high-pitched shriekers, while eveyone else just thinks “Well, duh! Don’t play it and don’t get involved.”. Attention junkies methinks.

I play in a regular, free RtCW tournament which sensibly uses Shrub to great effect - even the die-hard OSP’er clanners get right into it.
