It’ll be named with the date, time, and the name of the map. To find it, start ET, select “Replays” from the main menu, and find the demo in the list.

While playing it back, you can use F1 through F5 to dump the demo in the form of screenshots. F5 is the highest framerate (24 by default) and F1 is 0. If your system isn’t that fast, try playing back the demo with the cvar timedemo set to 1. This will make it adjust the demo playback speed to something your system can handle. Once you’ve done that, your screenshots dir will be full of files with the format framexxxx.tga. Use any video editing program to convert these to a video format of your choice. I’d recommend Divx5. I’m told VirtualDub works well for this in Windows.

I don’t know what F12 does, is that auto-record or just plain ordinary record?

If it’s auto-record the demo will be in a folder within \demos named after the date it was recorded (like “2004-08-06” for today, for instance), and will have a (very) unique name consisting of a random number, the player name and possibly map name as well.

If it’s just plain ordinary record, the demo will be in \demos and be called demonnnn.dm_xx where nnnn is a number starting at 0000 and incremented by 1 for each new demo you record. (the .dm_xx bit is the protocol, but you don’t to specifiy that when playing back a demo.

You should be able to see your demos within the game, by selecting Replays from the main menu, then selecting which demo you want to view from the list it will then provide you with.

i found the autorecord format to be

<yyyy-mm-dd><hhmmss><mapname>.dm_82

i.e. 2003-08-01-153421-battery.dm_82
